Anne Rice created three strong characters in her Vampire Chronicles and each of them had something, which made them shining trough the series. The brat prince Lestat was always full of "live" and his exploits were so reckless and selfish, but he got to learn about things around him in a hard way and his doings changed people and vampires around him. Marius, one of the oldest, is considered to be wise and stable, however he had dark secrets which are revealed and he was pushed to the deci...more

It took me years to get around to reading this book. I just didn't want to read it without reading the books in the series before it. So there it sat on my shelf. But after reading it, I would have to say that it is easily my favorite book in the entire series. Armand was such a mystery in Interview, and here his story is told... finally! I read most of it in one night when I worked overnights and found myself sitting with a client in the hospital... ALL NIGHT with nothing to do but r...more

First of all, Armand is one of my favourite characters. The way he showed himself in the first two books was utterly fascinating and captivating. Second, I'm confused why some people complain about the sexuality and erotic scenes with young boys. It may not fit to our culture but it should be remembered that times were different then and this book was about that time also.

Now, I don't know what went wrong but I didn't get the same feeling from this Armand's autobiography. Though I liked ...more

An interesting book, but it seemed to me to be drowned in the overuse of endless adjectives, adverbs, and flowery descriptors. However, the book is supposed to be Armand's autobiography, and maybe since Vampires have the whole of eternity to wait, the use of flowery grammar justifies their eternal existence.

The best part of the entire work is Marius' commentary regarding how all of his faith in human goodness was obliterated by the inhuman twentieth century. It is a very good rendition of ...more

For me, The Vampire Chronicles are the be-all-end-all of vampire novels. And while I have my favorites within the series, I find myself comparing every other vampire novel I read to the entire set. So, if you want to discuss them, go ahead and send me a note. And if you're new to the vampire genre, you can't go wrong with Anne Rice. This one is my second favorite of the series.

I'm not sure if it's because of the recent chaos going on in my life or if this book really wasn't that great... It bored me. It couldn't hold my attention at all. This book took me longer to read than any of the rest of the series has.

I did like some of the imagery in this book, but at points there was so much imagery I forgot what the plotline was in the time it took me to read the descriptive paragraphs...

This book could have been so much more. Armand has lived for over 500 years, but Rice inexplicably focuses on a few years near the beginning of his life. I suppose she didn't want to retell the story she had already told in Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat, but telling it from Armand's perspective would have been fascinating. Alas, we have this instead.

I tried. I really really tried to get into this book, seeing as how I enjoyed the first four. It didn't work. I forced myself half way through the book, but the whole tortured, bisexual vampire thing felt too much like a bad Jerry Springer episode. Maybe it got better as the story went on, maybe it didn't. I didn't have the interest (or the velvet cloak) to find out.

Favorite Quotes

I didn’t look to the shore much after this first long and memorable glimpse. I looked up at Heaven and her court of mythical creatures fixed forever in the all powerful and inscrutable stars. Ink black was the night beyond them, and they so like jewels that old poetry came back to me, the sound even of hymns sung only by men.

This is where I stopped in the series. Anne Rice had the habit of making all her characters extremely homo erotic from the beginning, but I could deal with it because the stories were excellent. I had to draw the line at this book though. Reading about ancient vampires giving and receiving head from little boys is not my idea of entertainment.

I wish I hadn't bought that book. Anne really screwed up this opportunity to shed some light on a key character in her Marius-Lestat arc but she blew it. If only his years at the cult would have been more revealed, and the two orphans from WTFland would have been removed the book would have become a wonderful piece of fiction.

Not my favorite book in the series. I wasn't really sure why we needed an Armand book in the first place. He was never a very engaging character, so as to why he needed his own tome, kind of surprised me. I won't be a jerk and spoil the ending, but it left me sort of...deflated. Anti-climatic ending to a dull character.

I loved this one over the Queen of the Damned. Armand was given a wonderfully sculpted past along with adding a bit of foreshadowing to the future. I love the fact that they speak of his actual age and how Marius took him in. Also giving more details about the "Mother and Father" of vampirism.

This book explores the life of one of the oldest Vampires in her series. As a young ampire Armands personality is more complex and he needed his own book to get him. Anne does her research, and beautifully explains life in Rome, Europe, and America through the span of centuries.

IMHO, the most romantic of the Vampire Chronicles. Armand is just such a sensuous and attractive character. This may not be the best written novel, definitely crossing the line into the realm of the sappy, but I enjoyed it despite all of that(or maybe because of all that?)

I really enjoyed this book even though I felt it difficult to follow at some points (I'm sure this is because this is my first experience with Anne Rice that is not a movie!). The homoerotic sequences were quite enjoyable. I liked that things moved between time periods.

This one sickened me. It's sad to see such good writting gone so bad.

If there were a way to unread something, this would be one of those books for me though.

If you have any objections to children in sexual explicit situations stay well clear of this book.
