Who's to say where you can draw artistic inspiration from? I want a rug like Emma's. The illustrations are Beautiful water color illustrations that breathe life to the companion text. This is an uplifting read aloud with a wonderful message about talent, inspiration and the internal reward one can get from artistic expression.

This is a story of Emma who from birth had a rug in her room, and as she grew she became fond of the rug. Emma draws these beautiful drawings all because she thinks the rug gives her the ability to paint and draw. When her mother washes the rug, Emma is destroyed and doesn't think she can draw, until she learns that her talent comes from withing.

I really liked this book and think it amazing. I think this book sends a strong message that there isn't anyone thing that makes you talente More...

The illustrations are lovely, just gorgeous. I especially like the second to last one when Emma goes outside and becomes part of the foliage.

This is a wonderful story, with a somewhat too abrupt ending I thought, but it works okay enough. Emma is a gifted artist from a young age, and it’s interesting to see how she attributes her talent and abilities and how she discovers the truth.

This is a great book for any child as they can see another child discover what’s within he More...

Emma's Rug is a multicultural picture book that explores the creativity of Emma. When she was born someone gave her a rug that as she grows becomes a vital part of her life. She sleeps with it by her bed. She cuddles with it. It is clear as we read this text that the rug is an extension of Emma. One day she begins to draw and for a child her age it is quite a feat. She begins to win prizes for her art and the teachers and parents are in awe of her talent. No one can understand where she pi More...

Emma, like many children, has a very strange lovey. It's a rug.

And that rug, with its fluff, is her inspiration for all the art she does, all the awards she wins that she doesn't care about.

Until her mother washes it, and poor Emma is totally traumatized. I'm not sure if that scene is over-the-top or not, but the girl literally throws out all her pictures and stops talking in class. The happy ending comes when she sees she can get her inspiration from the world instead of More...

Emma's rug is about a young artist who believes her inspiration comes to her from staring at her rug. The watercolor illustrations are not only beautiful and realistic but also powerful. The illustration of Emma on page 23 vividly depicts how upset she is when she finds out her mother has washed her rug. A good read for all students in grades K-8.

Another fascinating story and illustrations by Allen Say! The little girl in this story is an interesting character who makes me wonder what's going on in her mind. Is this just "the mind of an artist," or is something else at work too?

This thought-provoking tale of talent and torment invites us to ponder the source of creativity and offers a rare and respectful glimpse into the depths of the gifted child.

Cute story, beautiful illustrations as always. Allen Say does wonderful work. Excellent message about finding your talent within instead of without.

Allen Say's illustrations are beautifully realistic -- though they are not my style -- and the story's cute.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. The story was going along so smoothly, but then it took a sudden turn and I was a little startled and saddened. The ending did tie everything back together again, but not in such a way that I was completely happy. I might recommend if you were a fan of Allen Say already.
