It's an accurate roundup of current understanding of how the brain works, with a few quirks and some attempts at advice. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other brain books I've been reading because:

(a) the discussion is fairly standard--if you've read another brain book, you've probably got most of what you need

(b) the advice is pretty weak (really, I need to eat carbohydrates to give my brain energy?). Readers expect advice in a brain book to be "do this and you'l More...

A very easy to read, easy to understand book on the inner working of the brains. Filled with various real-life examples that the "everyday joe" can relate to, which helps the information stick.

The chapter on illiusions, how they work and why, really amazed me, though I was equally facinated by the chapters on memory and personality. Actually, now that I think about it, the whole book was great!

Something I learned from this book: I now I understand why my pic More...

Very nice easy read. Great tone and humor to it.

I finished this a while ago, but like what I learned from it especially about sleep and properly feeding the brain. Things mentioned in this book link hand in hand and have made other books I've been reading make even more sense, like Nina Planck's Real Food and Michael Pollen's Omnivore's Dilemma. The section on sleep tied in nicely with another book I've read quite a bit of: The Promise of Sleep by William C. Dement and Christopher Vaughan More...

A factual & light read on the human brain. My favorite chapters are on diet, sleep and the brain's development. Studies shows that brain size peaks at 20yrs and starts to degenerate...haha..

According to the book, we can practice various brain maintenance strategies:
- Lifelong learning
- Remain engaged in social environments
- Exercise
- Stress management

More...

Just read a few chapters so far, I'm enjoying how it relates brain reactions to things like appetite, sleep etc - not much that's really surprising but a different perspective on some things.

A readable summary of current neuroscience wisdom, this book might be boring for someone who has taken Psych 101 recently, but it was mostly new to me. Especially interesting was the overview of memorization techniques (some old, some even older) such as the Method of Loci.

A really good overview of your brain and how it works. Plus it's an O'Reilly book!

For someone who's read a lot on psychology & brain science, not tons new here. But a nice mini-reference with a fun conversational style and a few "party trick" bits.

I really like the Missing Manual series, and this is the same style - light-hearted, but well-researched, and well structured for learning. It's not the deepest book on the subject, but then that's not what it was written for. It's a good introduction.

This is a good book for those looking to learn more about the how's and why's of the brain relating to everyday activities.
