Perfect beach/plane book - it has characters with enough depth and a story line with enough bite to keep you going but nothing too strenuous about this. The nice thing is that the author is a very accomplished professional and the book reflects her experiences. There is also a wealth of historical information woven in concerning military outposts on the islands surrounding NYC. I purchased this book headed for a plane ride with nothing left to read...expected nothing from it and was more than More...

Another great entry into the Alex Cooper series. And another fascinating bit of New York history. In her 10th outing Alexandra Cooper is trying a 30 year old rape case, and also trying to solve murders committed by what may be a serial killer. Oh, and she’s trying to make time for romance.

This did not disappoint, and Fairstein has kept this series fresh. All the familiar elements are there, the Jeopardy Final Question bet between Alex and Chapman, the police details, the interestin More...

When the bound and tortured body of a young woman is discovered in an abandoned Manhattan ferry terminal District Attorney Alexandra Cooper and Detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace start hunting for her killer. At the same time Cooper is also prosecuting a man who raped a woman in the 1970’s but who can only now be brought to justice due to DNA evidence and she’s also made it on to a gangster’s hit list and undergoes some scary moments due to that.

I’ve read all of the previous no More...

Assistant NYC District Attorney Alex Cooper is a smart, gutsy lady who finds her work, helping victims and putting away those who harm them, deeply satisfying. Working with a skilled, equally devoted team of detectives, she finds herself conducting investigations in the hidden places in and around the city, little known locations that provide the perfect settings for enterprising criminals. This time around, Governor's Island, a military bastion that's been used for defensive purposes since Amer More...

I hadn't read Linda Fairstein before, but had heard of this series, so thought I'd try it. I don't think I'll read another one. The main story was pretty good, but there was so much tangential stuff that it really detracted from the enjoyment. The author has written a non-fiction book about sexual violence, and I admire and am grateful for the dedication, however, there was too much such "education" in this mystery. Probably 30% of the book could've been elminated, making a much tighte More...

Manhattan D.A. Alex Cooper’s is working on a case of young woman found in an abandoned building. The brutality of her murder is disturbing enough, but then a second body is found off the Belt Parkway. Between dodging the bullets of the gang members who are infuriated by Alex’s most recent courtroom victory and keeping a rendezvous with a charming restaurateur, a serial killer on the loose is the last thing she needs on her plate right now. Then a third victim is found.

Killer Heat is compelling in the beginning and the end but sags in the middle. The plot works well, and the characters are complex enough to be interesting and credible.

While I'm a sucker for arcane information, however, this book contains a good many more details about obscure New York City landmarks than I was willing to assimilate. I was quite interested, on the other hand, in the history Linda Fairstein (the real-life prosecutor) provided about relatively new and controversial l More...

I enjoy these Alex Cooper books. They are fairly fast-paced and exciting, with enough twists and turns to keep interest. I also like how just enough carries over from series to series to keep continuity, but each book can stand alone. One thing that bugged me in this book was Mike's encyclopedic knowledge of the history of New York -- knowledge he insisted on sharing with everyone at any opportunity. It became boring and more like reading a history text than a crime novel. Maybe if I lived in NY More...

I was conflicted about this book. It read very easily and had a good storyline. However, I don't think I'll read any more in this series. This is, apparently, the tenth in the series. Yet, I still found the characters to slightly lifeless and undeveloped.

The action and the mystery was well thought out. You could tell a great deal of research went into it. Another annoyance was all the exposition. At times, you felt she just used the characters to lecture you on history, the law, and More...

I first read Fairstein's DEATH DANCE. I found it engaging, and went on to read LIKELY TO DIE, which took some 100 - 150 pages to really get into... NOT a fast read. I appreciate Fairstein's detail, but I like things to move along at a faster clip, with more interjection of character humor. Very little of that in this book, other than a bet on the final question on Jeopardy. I won't neccesarily avoid the rest of the series, but I won't run to it either. KILLER HEAT didn't become can't-put-down un More...

Linda gets sense of place (New York) just like Nevada Barr. I love it. (& yes, I realize I am not reading these in order--oh, well!)I love it that the main character, Alex Cooper, is trying cases in court and so there are several subplots while she is taking part in the larger investigation. And this time we learn about Governors Island. Interesting! Mike Chapman and Mercer are great teammates and friends. And there is the elusive love interest, Luc. The red herrings are set, too, and it is gr More...

Killer Heat had such potential but it just never produced the nail-biting drama promised on the cover. The dialogue in the story was weak, choppy and confusing at times. And worse than bad dialogue, rather than writing complex characters the author relied on stereotypes and put-downs to elevate her heroine. The main character, of course, was startlingly beautiful while all of the other characters were tubby and round and waddled...so full of faults that the main character was perfect in comparis More...

Another great book by Linda Fairstein. I love the camaraderie between Alex, Mike and Mercer. They really work as a team which is why IMHO they solve so many cases. In real police work, each and every cop (detective/boss whatever) is looking to stroke their own ego and toot their own horn. This makes them hold info back from the rest of the team and puts themselves in the spotlight. In real life, it doesn't seem to be about the crime but more a personal aim to advance their careers.

Those who want their heroines tough, strong, and super intelligent know they've found her in Alex Cooper. She's a D.A. in Manhattan and as we meet her again in the tenth offering by Linda Fairstein, she's enjoying victory. It was a tough rape case but Alex won it (and incurred the animus of Latin Princes gang members along the way).

Nonetheless, her winning feeling is soon lost as she is notified that the body of a young woman has been found in an abandoned building. Now, author Fair More...

I was thrilled to get the chance to read and review Killer Heat. I am totally hooked on Linda Fairstein's series, and this latest installment did not disappoint in any way. A tight, well-plotted mystery is tied together with great New York history.
I also enjoyed the progression in the characters' lives, which for a long-time reader of the series makes for growth and development that keeps the stories fresh.

All in all, a fantastic read that I would gladly recommend to both myster More...

3 1/2 stars. Assistant DA Alex Cooper confronts a serial killer whose deadly actions lead her through the little-known islands surrounding Manhattan. It's a hot August and just as Alex is winning a rape trial, she gets a call about the body of a young woman found in an abandoned building. The brutality of the beating and murder is disturbing, and then another body is found off the parkway. A good mix of legal issues, NYC history, and suspense. Very exciting ending.

I found this one on the Friends book sale cart - I needed a book to read! And I was pleased.
I liked the characters and the plot - young women who were being found murdered around New York City. Whoever was killing them was leaving very few clues. Like the cops, (and D.A. Alex Cooper) I was pretty sure I knew who it was, but new info comes in because of a photograph - one that should never have made its way into the newspaper.
Good story.

on the front of this paperback is a quote from Nelson DeMille calling linda fairstein "One of the best crime fiction writers in America today," and i heartily agree. alex cooper, the nyc d.a. has a good team with mike chapman and mercer ?, the two detectives who work well with each other. young women are showing up dead, and they need to find the assailant before he strikes again. several new york sites end up being the location for clues.

I was really disappointed with this book. It lacked the plot and pace of her other novels and it seemed like the end had very little to do with the beginning in some ways. The seams just seemed to hang loosely together and it felt as if Fairstein hadn't the enthusiasm to pull them in any tighter. I normally like her books and keep them on my shelves, but this one instantly went into the Charity shop bag.

I think this is the 3rd Alex Cooper book I've read and I'm still trying to figure out why exactly the DA tags along with the cops and investigates crimes. And that part where the author spent like 10 pages talking about real life serial killers? Nothing to do with anything. I think I've read three books in this series because I'm always hopeful that the book will live up to its dustcover. I'm 0 for 3.

I've read two or three of this series and I invariably finish one, think I'm not going to read any more, time goes by, I see a description of another one and think it looks interesting. Not smart. It's not bad, but there's just no spark. The research about New York and sex crimes is impeccable, but there's not enough humour or suspense or.... something.

I always enjoy the Alex Cooper books - good characters, good plots, and as usual in this one, interesting settings. The isalns of New York featured in this one - wild & starge places just a short hop from one of the world's great cities, interesting contrast.
The setting remiunded me of one of the Anna Pigeon books that was set on Liberty Island.

Another good one, set during the heat of August. There's a serial killer on the loose and the Latin Princes (who's leader the Assistant D.A. put away) is out to get revenge. In addition, more background about New York City. The author also acknowledges how much she enjoys discovering more things about NYC's mysterious past.

A good, not great, mystery. I enjoyed the New York history, and the villain was really creepy, but the story did drag at times. I did not like Luc. Smarmy and just too smooth. The author's background is impressive and I have enjoyed her books. This one could have contained a bit less background info, however.

This book follows the formula that Fairstein has perfected in previous books. Someone is killed and Cooper's crew sets to work finding the killer. Along the way a court case is successfully prosecuted and and evil-doer is convicted. At some point DA Cooper is placed in peril and somehow finds her way clear to solve another mystery. All told, Killer Heat was a pretty good read and Cooper, Mike and Mercer will find their way onto my bookshelf yet again.

This was a slow starter but her books always have some interesting history about New York and this one deals with old military posts and forts from the Dutch, Revolutionary War and Civil War. Once the story got going it was fast paced and lots of action.

It's the end of the summer and the heat brings about an increase in murders. Alex is wrapping up a trial, and gets involved in the murder of a young woman that her esteemed co-workers Mike and Mercer are working on. As time passes, more women are murdered and found on little-known islands around NY. Can the killer have a thing for women in uniform?

Maybe a little too much military history for my taste, but the plot clips along, the characters are enjoyable and sincere and their personal angst doesn't take over the book as they sometimes do in Patricia Cornwell novels.
