On the morning of December 7, 2006, Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes each took a digital photo of everyday objects randomly arranged on their kitchen tables and, unbeknownst to one another, uploaded them to the website Flickr. 3191: A Year Of Mornings , Yahoo Picks!:
"When Stephanie and Mav embarked on their "year of mornings," they'd never worked together before. And they live 3,191 miles apartone in Portland, Oregon; the other in Portland, Maine. Yet, these kindred spirits have bridged their continental divide with a daily project that's become one of the most quietly beautiful photoblogs on the Web." (September 12, 2007)

This another one of those blog-turned-book deals. Two bloggers living across the country from each other in Portland, OR and Portland, ME decided to do a collaborative project together. Every morning they would each take a photograph without consulting the other, and then present them together as a diptych on their blog. Apparently this took off in the blogging world, although not to Julie and Julia levels, unfortunately for the authors.

I think it's a very nice idea, both in that it fosters conn...more

With penny pinching the only thing that is chic these days, it is easy to forget the basic things in life that make it worth living.

Case in point: A Year of Mornings – 3191 Miles Apart by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes

After reading countless reviews about how great this book is, I caved and finally got myself a copy. Normally, I lean towards books that are at least 80% text, but this is exactly the opposite. Here is a perfect summary of the book (thanks to its publisher, of...more

If you have ever had a friend that was far away, this book is talking to you. Two friends are 3,191 miles apart, each in a Portland (one Maine, one Oregon), and sharing (publicly) one photo each every morning for a year. This book is the organized collection of those pairs of photos. The rules are simple: before noon, no collaborating. In these random snippets of disparate mornings, there are secrets about how a day moves, and over the course of the year you watch the seasons change and lives sh...more

My good friend is a great source of new books. When I arrived at her house today I was confronted with a stack of books to look at, review, read and peruse. A Year of Mornings was among them.

This book is the culmination of a year long joint blog project in which the authors posted a morning picture each day. I liked the idea of this book. It was mostly pictures and could be a source of inspiration. I can imagine putting a piece of tracing paper over one of the photos and tracing an outline of th...more

A Year of Mornings is a photo-a-day project with a twist. Maria and Stephanie live 3,191 miles apart - Maria in Portland, Maine and Stephanie in Portland, Oregon - and had only met briefly in person once before they embarked on a year-long visual blogging project. Each posted a photo taken before 10am to a shared blog. No plans, no themes, no collaboration.

Even though they didn't plan in advance, the pairs of photos often have an uncanny synchronicity, with the colors and composition matching or...more

"A Year of Mornings: 3191 Miles Apart" is the printed version of a blog created by two women who took a photograph every morning for a year, and posted their photos together. It's a study in domesticity most of the time - the photos are of cracked hard boiled eggs, toast about to be eaten, a book in bed, and corners and bits of their houses.

I thought I would enjoy this book, as I have a thing for the comforts-of-home photography genre, but whoever designed the print version of this project deser...more

3 out of 5 stars.

I was enchanted by the idea behind this book. Having recently rekindling a passion for photography I was excited to be inspired by the simple images of two friends, miles apart. I was a bit disappointed. I am not sure why the publisher choose to lay out the book in this way. The majority of the photos are thumbnail sized. This defeats what I felt the purpose of a collection of photographs is. I would have gladly paid more for a thicker volume where each photo was large enough to...more

What started as a collaborative blog project between 2 women across the country has become a peaceful book of photos. For a year each woman posted a photo taken in the morning to a shared blog. Their photographic and artistic style, as well as their way of living is very similar. Interesting for for two women who have only met once since starting this project. I was not in tune with the blog during the initial year of posting but enjoyed looking at their year of photos and reading about their st...more

I just happened upon this exquisite book in Carmel.

Two women 3,191 miles apart begin 'talking' on a blog about shared interests in artistic pursuits. They meet only once but feel a real connection and so began a daily blog in which they each took a photograph before noon and sent it to each other.

The book begins with a brief introduction by each as to how all this came about and who they are. But it is the pictures that are so amazing and unique. It speaks volumes about how connected they truly...more

Two artists post pictures of their mornings each day for a year. One lives in Portland, Maine and the other in Portland, Oregon. I really enjoyed the photos and how they worked together or seemed to have a synergy. The photos were often too small to enjoy them as I would have liked. I prefered the larger photos. But I did like the format--from the bumpy cover to the thick pages. They also included some of the comments they got from their daily postings from people (including those in different l...more

I was inspired by this project to take an extra second during my day--mornings, especially--to just appreciate the moment. The pictures in this book are quiet, reflective, and just beautiful, and I really love the idea behind this work.

I had not been familiar with the blog before my friend lent me this book, and I regret having missed out on it. For one thing, books that originate from blogs can never capture the piecemeal excitement that comes from checking for updates periodically. Rather than...more

The concept of this book is so appealing to me, and the photographs are definitely beautiful; I found myself wishing a few times that they had pushed a little harder for diversity in subject matter, but that's just a personal bias, not their problem. The book is still lovely. I would have been interested in the background behind more of the photos, too. My big complaint is that I wish the book design had included equally-sized diptychs for each day; the small photos made it difficult to achieve...more

Two ladies from Portland, ME (Mav) and Portland, OR (Steph) started a year-long, almost-daily photoblog of morning photographs and published this book as a result. The photos are charming--softly lit domestic scenes. Their style is pretty interesting in their sense of 'inclusion'--what they chose to include and how much of it--since most of the time the subjects extend out of the frame and are therefore abstracted a bit. I think that's what keeps them intriguing because plain breakfast scenes mi...more

as a photo-a-day taker myself, this book of photos resonated with my own attempts to capture the mundane and the everyday in beautiful ways, to document a life lived, and to do it with beauty and gratitude. this book was all of that and more as two artists who live 3000 miles apart each took a picture every morning and uploaded them side by side to their website 3191 ( the actual # of driving miles between their homes). beautiful (and often very similiar) photos of their lives is all that is in...more

I loved the 3191 blogs, and I was really looking forward to having this book to peruse through before bed each night. But I have to say, I'm really disappointed in the layout. Many of the photos are tiny... I feel like I need a magnifying glass to really see them. I would have paid more for one-photo-per-page spread, or even a 2-per page. But instead I lose more than half of the photos because they're too small to enjoy. I had planned to buy the evenings version, but I won't, for fear that it's...more

I thought this sounded like an amazing book. 2 women 3191 miles apart post a photo every day for a year to a mutual blog. One lives in Portland Oregon, the other in Portland Maine. I've been intrigued by the idea of taking a photo a day for a year and thought this would be a source of inspiration. My guess is their blog must have been amazing....... the book was not. The photos vary in size, some only 1 inch square. Hard to see the details and thus making it very hard to relate to.

I'd give it a...more

I don't know; this style of photography just really depresses me. To me it just screams of lonely, isolated, anxious women. Which is probably completely unfair, but there you go.

Some of the photos were really lovely ~ I especially liked the unique photos of felines. Oh, but I also thought it was pretty weird that neither of the two authors took any photos of people, unless you count strange occasional anonymous unidentifiable body parts. For me, this bizarre lack of humanity kind of undid the wh...more

Honestly, I think this was probably an awesome blog, but it doesn't translate well into book format. At least, not into this format. Most of the photos are so small that I found myself squinting to try to tell what they were, which does not lend itself to appreciating lovely photography.

Also, checking the blog every morning to see what they two women posted would be kind of fun. Seeing all the mornings at once in a book, with multiples on each page, makes it hard to focus on one morning at a tim...more

It's hard to say I actually "read" this book, because it is mostly photographs... but such beautiful ones. All small, domestic moments; paging through it made me feel centered and slowed-down in the best possible way. A lovely reminder to appreciate the daily beauties in our lives. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the size of some of the photos: so tiny I felt I couldn't really see them properly... and isn't that the point?
Cynthia
I love this book! It is a print version of a blog shared by two women. Each morning they would take a photo and post it on their blog. They live across the country and had not met personally. It is such a quiet and inspirational reminder of how important the small things are in life. I have given it as a gift to several people who have inspired me over the last year. This book is all photos, so it is good for inspiration or a little calm in your day. I keep it on my bedside table to flip through from time to time. If you've followed the 3191 blog you know what kind of photos you'll be getting: ethereal, quiet, peaceful.

It really is beautiful, and if you're a morning person I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did.

I finally ordered this book from Amazon. And was very happy to receive it and always have it around on my bookshelf. It makes one appreciate the mornings because they really are a beautiful time of day that people dismiss usually. We are too busy waking up, tired, trying to get ready as fast as we can to start a new day of school or work. Mornings are daunting and we don't appreciate them. This book filled with photographs of two ladies living 3191 miles apart flips all those bad morning thought...more

A sweet book of the photographs two women, one in Portland, ME the other in Portland, OR taken each morning for one year and posted on their blog. The pictures tend to celebrate small details and interior landscapes, which is very calming in our hectic world. What you bring to the photographs are largely your own thoughts. Enjoy the beauty of the everyday.

A beautiful book to just always have close at hand - a coffee table or bedside stand. Whenever you need a quiet moment to reflect on the simple things or want to admire lovely photos from a nice paperback instead of the cold screen of the computer, I suggest this book. All the love it's received from across the blogosphere is well deserved.

This book is compiled of photographs...so, I didn't actually "read" it. However, I did look at every photograph, compared photographs, and contemplated what each morning entailed. The photographs were beautiful and tranquil, each telling a unique story. A great "coffee table book" or for a breakfast nook.

There is something so soothing, calm, and lovely about A Year of Mornings. A photographic tale of two Portlands within a year's time -- two bloggers, two coasts, often serendipitous coincidences in what they take photos of -- it shows the beauty in the simplest things. I just adore this little book.

'' This another one of those blog-turned-book deals '' '' While the book is interesting to look through, and does make the everyday beautiful, the everyday also becomes mundane again by the end. Probably 80% of the photos contain some kind of breakfast food (75% of that being eggs), another 10% include bedclothes, with the remaining 10% being divided between cats and miscellaneous. It was an ok book, but I think it works better in the online world.''

If you're the type who likes soft focused photos of hard boiled eggs, sunlight cast on cotton sheets, and robin's egg blue pottery, this book is for you. It's like Tumblr and Flickr had a baby. It's heartwarming, but nothing entirely new. 365 is an amazing project though and I kind of believe everyone should do it at some point in their life.
