How did I survive chilchood without these books?!?
I moonlight as a children's book reviewer for a Southern Vermont/ Berkshire County, MA, newspaper and happened upon the Charlie and Lola series last year. The books, each and every one, are absolutely enchanting and chock full of dry, irreverent British humor. Lauren Child's whimsical drawings and collages are a joy to behold -- they leap off the page in glorious technicolor.

I recently fell in love with the "Charlie and Lola" animated series--which is based on these books. The television series is SO terribly cute, funny and sweet and I absolutely love-love-love that Charlie and Lola are British (one of my favorite things in life is listening to adorable British-children accents). I think I like the book more having seen the series first, knowing how Charlie and Lola "speak" and reading the story with their accents in my mind. Still, it's a re...more
I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go to Bed by Lauren Child is a book Harriet chose for herself at a recent trip to the book store. When the parents are busy, Charlie's put in charge of getting younger sister, Lola, to bed. Charlie has to use gentle persuasion and humor to get the rambunctious Lola to listen. She would rather bounce, play with stickers, and chatter than go to bed.

I used to read this to my baby every day, until she started reaching out and trying to grab everything with both hands and then shove whatever she caught into her mouth. She was always fascinated by the big faces; bright, contrasting colours; and interesting textures and layout.

Big brother Charlie must coax his little sister to go to bed. For every creative reason Charlie gives for bedtime ("if there's no bedtime, there can be no bedtime drink, and it's pink milk tonight."), the equally-creative Lola creates a stalling tactic ("but Charlie, if I have pink milk, the tigers will want pink milk too."). The collage style Child uses is a perfect fit for two kids with unusual ways of looking at things.
This book is another Charlie and Lola siblings book. Lola has a big imagination
and Charlie is trying to get her to go to bed. Charlie is more of a babysitter or
older responsible sibling. Lola can stall and make up grandiose reasons for not
getting to bed. Liked the story and her imagination and will get the children I work
with talking and using their imaginations.

Our girls love the Charlie and Lola series on TV, so when they pick out these books, I put on my best English accent and try to mimic their voices. These books are so much fun that you hardly think about the fact that they are also fun and silly ways to end the nighttime or, in the case of the "I Will Never, Not Ever Eat a Tomato" book, dinnertime fights.
As with other books bearing similar story lines, children and parents alike will recognize the nightly struggle to avoid the dreaded bedtime. Child's version is particularly charming due to older brother Charlie's admirable patience and tenderness.

Love Charlie and Lola! This book is good to teach about the importance of rest, sibling responsibility and bedtime routines. Even the animals need rest Lola!
This book is full of great verbs and tons of imagination. This would be fun to talk about fiction books and what makes them fiction.
Lola tells her brother Charlie that she is NOT tired and NOT ready to go to bed and she will never be tired. As Charlie gets her ready for bed he goes along with her until she is finally to lay down and go to sleep. An entertaining story.
I think my little girl recognized herself in this book. The main character sounds just like her! Quite an imagination :)
Little Mr Man really likes this one, he tried to get me to make chocolate milk for 3 tigers....
Love reading this at bedtime! Lola just epitomises small children the world over.
chalie and lola are my favourit and my best of all my daughters books to read at bedtime

Charlie and Lola are adorable kids, and I love their manner of speaking. Based on this book, I think Charlie is the older brother my brother-less sisters and I always wished we could have had.
We have to read this at least twice a day at our house right now! I enjoy getting to inflict my horrible "British" accent on my two-year-old. So far, he actually enjoys it-- woo-hoo! -- especially when he counts the animals or reads a word, and tell him, "Good job, little cha...more

Lola loves to stay up late and this does not make life easy for big brother Charlie whose job it is sometimes to get her bed. Lola comes up with every excuse in the book, but Charlie is patient and goes along with her--secretly tricking her along the way to get her to bed.
Cute story and fun characters. Charlie is the most patient person ever! And he goes along with Lola's excuses, but plays along so that she will move along. Great big bro!

I dunno whyy, the kids liked it..
A big Charlie and Lola fan, this one doesn't disappoint! Lola doesn't want to go to bed and stalls by imagining a bunch of animals doing various things around their house. The interaction between Charlie and his little sister Lola is some of the sweetest elements of these books. Perfect for a big brother with a baby sister!
Typical Lauren Child book. I love the humor she adds into the smallish details, making it entertaining for children and adults. This book made me smile, I would recommend it.

All the wimsy and silliness you might expect from Lola. Charlie is consistently patient and sweet. Fun bedtime read.

Oh for pajamas like Lola's! So cute! And lots of pink milk featured in this one.
Cute! Reminds me of my daughter who "Is not sleepy and will not go to bed!"

Lauren Child grew up in Wiltshire as the middle child of three sisters and the daughter of two teachers. She has always been interested in the many aspects of childhood, from gazing into toy shop windows to watching American children's shows from the 1960s. “Then I say, "Let's go and brush our teeth." So Lola says, "But Charlie, I can't brush my teeth because somebody is using my tooth." "But who would use your toothbrush?" I ask. Lola says "I think that lion. I saw a lion with my toothbrush and now he's brushing his teeth with it." "But it isn't this your toothbrush Lola?" "Oh," says Lola, "he must be using yours.”
