Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with wor...more

EXCELLENT book. Wonderfully expressed interpretations of the Tao Te Ching. If everyone lived by these simple guildlines and wisdom, there would be no war, no crime and a unity that is unfathomable based on our current world. One can't help but feel wonderful while reading this book. Great source of "grounding." GREAT read, just before bed.

At some point today, notice an instance of annoyance or irritation you have with another person or situation. Decide to do the Tao (or practice the Way) in that moment by turning inward with curiosity about where you are on the continuum between desire and allowing. Permit the paradox of wanting the irritant to vanish and allowing it to be what it is.

As I was attempting to read through and absorb this very first lesson, I was given an excellent opportunity to put it into practice. My...more

I don't think I read this book in the manner in which it was intended. It is a deconstruction of the 81 verses of the Tao. At the end of each chapter, there is a daily assignment to practice the discussed mantra. I powered through the book like a novel, either at the gym or on the subway. I feel like that was the wrong way to do it because I didn't take an afternoon to spend time with a frog, or take an hour long walk to observe nature, or find a homeless person and send him/her a prayer of happ...more

Wayne Dyer chose a most appropriate title for this book because changing your thoughts WILL change your life. This book came along at the perfect time for me because I realized my thoughts were getting in the way of me finding true happiness and purpose in life. Unfortunately most of us are riddled with negative thoughts throughout the day, whether it's what we believe to be true about ourselves, or what we assume others are thinking about us. Both will bring nothing but frustration, low self-est...more

A bit about me: anyone who knows my bookshelf (and my audio bookshelf) knows I love Wayne Dyer. I've read or listened to most of his books and re-read or re-listen to them often. This is my favorite one, as of today. Here he applies his trademark straightforward, humorous, and totally liveable approach to the Tao. Wonderful advice & wisdom. It's not HIS "wisdom" that I love, but his way of breaking down the Tao and explaining it in ways that are useful and likeable, and most of all, me...more

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book! I had SO MANY "AHHA" moments it was unbelievable! I actually FEEL BETTER now that I have read this book! It has definitely CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER!! Here is a summary of my favorite parts...

Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Stay in this moment NOW!

You are DOING NOTHING, rather you are being DONE! Allow, let go of control, shift your awareness.

No storm lasts forever! When something seems incapable of handli...more

I liked this book. It gave me a few good ideas. I usually like more suggestions on how to take action. A always seem to get something out of each book and this one was no different.

I actually borrowed this from the library as a book on cd. I played it in my car as I was driving my children all over for swimming lessons, to the park, wherever. It is fantastic! My husband actually listened to it and suggested that we purchase it for our own collection. It quotes all of the verses of the Tao and gives you practical ways to live the way of the Tao. It definitely changed my life.

this book arrived as a gift from a far away client...I don't believe she had any idea that I have been a dedicated student of the TAO te Ching for 38 years and that I collect translations. Dr. Wayne Dyer has created a thoroughly researched and thoughtful text for anyone interested in using the TAO as a life path.

Dr. Dyer helps "western" readers of today understand the sayings of the Tao. He interprets them for us to use in our everyday lives, as he has. The overall feeling of the book is one of calm acceptance and can help those who read it to reach this calm acceptance for themselves.

Dyer uses concepts such as trusting in your own nature, living contented, getting flexible in your thinking, to name a few.

One of the things I like about Dyer's work is that he wants you to DO...more

The first time I read this book I borrowed it from the library. I liked it so much I bought my own copy and I'm already reading it again. (and this time I'm only reading one chapter per day)

I don't remember how I picked up this book. However, I do remember at one point thinking that this Dr. Dyer and all his messages were full of it. My ego has been proven wrong and man am I glad it was!

This book is an indepth analysis of the over 2500 year old Tao. The Tao is the Chinese manuscript of a sage name Lao Tzu. It is equivalent to the Bible with an Asian flair. In fact, this man lived before Jesus came into being. The Tao is said to be one of the oldest and the most print...more

This book does not belong in the "self help" genre. It is as spiritual a text as any interpretation of the Bagavad Gita or Buddha's Sutras. Overall a deep, meaningful interpretation of the Tao te Ching with lots of ideas for practical application in everyday life. I enjoyed it so much, I'm reading it over. Lao Tzu's verses are so short and simple that I wouldn't have gotten 10% of the meaning without an interpretation. That is not to say that Wayne Dyer was THE authority on what Lao Tz...more

This is an amazing book! Split into sections for every verse in the Tao Te Ching, Wayne Dyer gives his interpretation of the verse and suggests how to apply it to your daily life. I read one verse a day so the meaning could sink in. I can honestly say this book has changed my life and helped me be more at peace. Regardless of your religious beliefs, or lack of beliefs, I think you could benefit from this book. The world would be a much better place if everyone read this!

Dr. Dyer is the guru of self help and learning to change your life through your thoughts. He lives what he writes and so can be considered a master in this area. This book is filled with inspiration and ways for you to change your life. The thoughts that we have are quite powerful and only we have the ability to get inside our heads and turn the negativity around. Reading this book will leave you refreshed and hopeful for the wondrous days that lie ahead of you.

Has a way of taking a different philosophy of religions (focusing on the Tao) and bringing them all together in a most peaceful way of thinking. As a christian I wasn't sure I would like it but many of his ideas went well with my own beliefs with an exception of a few. The title is exactly what it does if you want to change your life change the way you think. I have put many of his ideas to practice and seem to be more at peace with the world around me and myself.

Fantastic book. I love the clarity of Dyer's thoughts & practical interpretations of the 2500 year old Tao Te Ching. I knew very little about Taoism before reading this book. It supports my own spiritual beliefs & those of most major religions. I can honestly say that this book is changing my life daily. I am currently on my 3rd reread. It is a perfect way to start the day in a meaningful & reflective way.

Reading this book on the recommendation of a friend from work who described it as "inline with Christianity." Though I am only a quarter of the way through the book, I strongly disagree at the most fundamental level. While this book and the teachings of Lao-tzu in Tao Te Ching do have some life principles that are compatible with some teachings of Jesus, the root itself goes completely against the nature of Christ Himself. I do look forward to finishing the book though and having a mor...more

Eastern Philosophy meets a Christian interpretation. This book is thought provoking, and if you really listen to the book, could change your life for the better. Dyer goes through the verses of the Tao Te Ching and tells us what he believes it means in today's world.

Pros: Great book, thoughtfully written, thought provoking.

Cons: None

Final Verdict. Buy it!

I listened to this book on CD and just love Wayne W. Dyer.
My goal is always learning listening better and by concentrating on the Tao Te Ching values I'm doing that. Do the Tao the words Dyer uses over and over again really means Do God or whatever you call the all knowing source.
This information is 2500 years old and only the Bible has been read more.

This is a book that you never completely read through, although I've read and skimmed it with notes in the margins. It's a study, a course on life and wisdom and the Tao's reasoning of life and wisdom. It's a reference book of thoughts to ponder with the intricacies of the true meaning and purpose of life's journey. It's a well-loved asset to my library.
Catherine
He helps to make the Tao clearer. He talks about spiritual light and gives the feeling that everything is within your reach--all your love and aspirations. He talks about loving you because you can't give away what you don't have. If you don't love yourself, how can you love anyone else, so love yourself first.

I got the audio CD version from the library. Good to listen to while driving, as other drivers, peds, cyclists -- and my own reactions and actions -- provide constant examples of why the Tao is meaningful. It is an 8 disc set, and Dyer does repeat a lot. "Do the Tao now" is definitely grating after 4 discs.

This book reads like Wayne Dyer's journal, and I'm glad it helped him. It made me believe that, instead of reading Dyer's take on the Tao, I should return to the primary text, translated because, hey, I'm an American. Just because I long for enlightenment doesn't mean I'm willing to struggle.

One of my favorite writers and people in this world. Takes the Tao Te Ching and transforms it into something we can relate to, with meditations and wonderful "nuggets" of information - bringing this spirituality into my every day life has helped me immensely. Wonderful read for anyone

Meditative reflection on the teachings and sayings of Lao-Tzu compiled in Tao Te Ching. Has a profound insights that you can use in your life in having a deeper perspective of the way things are.It is a contradictions of truth but adds enlightenment when we look deeper into it.
Natalie
I had to listen to this one twice and am in the process of taking extensive notes. This is one that will take one at a time application and practice to get. Sometimes he's a bit convoluted unnecessarily but the principles are good and go with what I believe. Helpful guide.

This book was challenging reading material for me. I felt like it was the same old thing, page after page, verse after verse. Found myself skimming through it. A good book to revisit later; maybe I'll be a little older, wiser and receptive.
Shari
I liked it because it got my christian parents off my back about what I believe spiritually. :) It was an ok description of Taoism, but I don't think Wayne fully gets the deepest elements. I still like Wayne, but it just wasnt' quite there.
