Was darf die Hirnforsc...more

Who am I and if so how many is a book I'm glad to have finally finished reading. It is a very mixed bag. Divided, like Gaul under the Romans, into three parts: what can I know, what should I do and what can I hope; each of which is full of short chapters that tended at best to tantalise rather than satisfy.

The first part combined philosophy with contemporary research on the brain and I found this part the most enjoyable, although when we got to Mach denying the existence of self and then moved b...more

I picked this book from a small bookshop in Frankfurt airport. "One million copies sold worldwide" written on the front cover. A German book translated to English. The cover and the title are weird. I never read a book about philosophy before. That must be something I thought, so I took it along with two more books. The first thing came to my mind that I might take long time before I reach the end and probably it would be boring.
It was a total surprise, the book is divided into very small chapt...more

Zusammengefasst: WOW.

Elk...more

"Who Am I? And If So, How Many?: A Philosophical Journey" by Richard David Precht, translated from German by Shelley Frisch, was published in paperback in English in 2011. It is a mixture of philosophy, science, and journalism that is both informative and entertaining. The wide array of subjects includes emotions, memory, language, abortion, euthanasia, cloning, and love. We also have discussions of the big subjects, including What is truth? Does God exist? Does life have meaning?
Precht examin...more

A refresher for philosophy buffs, a primer for all others. Breezy yet substantial. Thought-provoking. Timely. An artful marriage of four fundamental questions and the latest brain research. Allows science nerds and liberal arts types to communicate. Love it.

A sprawling, ranging book that covers a lot of ground in only a few hundred pages. Crossing multiple schools of thought, especially psychology, sociology, neuroscience, Precht tells a story of philosophy and philosophers that is both eye-opening and rewarding. Despite the subject material, it's a breezy read. Precht hits a nice balance of pop-science and critical thinking, managing to reference material as accessible as the Matrix without ever sounding patronising.

It works as a philosophy primer...more

I am really new to philosophy so this is quite interesting stuff for me. As the pages turn the book keeps me more and more intereseted.

It has probably more sentences ending with a question mark than with a dot. If you want a book that gives you straight answers to philosphical questions than you will be disappointed. So the author does not try to give his perspective on questions but just teaches you how others over the history have written it.

If Gorder's "Sophie's World" is an introduction to Philosophy for teens, this book is its continuation.

Unlike many other introductions to philosophy it is not constructed according to any chronological principal. Instead Precht constructs his book according to the three Kantian questions: What can I know? (chapter on epistemology) What should I do? (ethics) and What can I hope for? (philosophy of happiness from Epicurus to Marcuse). This way Philosophy could be perceived as something much more...more

This book, written by a German, is also available in English. "who am I and if so how many". It takes you on a philosophical journey. The book is divided into small chapters, each addressing a huge, monumental question. In an entertaining way, eloquent and witty written, the reader follows the path of famous and not so famous but nevertheless history influencing philosophers, psychologists, neuro scientists, doctors, and brain researchers through a chapter in an attempt to come to a conclusion,...more

Thank goodness it's over. These were some interesting topics and questions quite poorly treated. It's a wild hodgepodge of truisms, foregone conclusions and revelling in ignorance ("The human mind! How can we know it? It's so complex! It's so intertwined! Everything has to do with everything!"). A lot of sensible - if unsurprising - thoughts and useful information, too (e.g. about the lives and discoveries of a number of scientists and philosophers), but I really disliked Precht's writing style....more

1. Was kann ich wissen?
2. Was soll ich tun?
3. Was darf ich hoffen?

Đặc biệt, lịch s...more

I was interested in philosophy, but didn't know where to start, and I was off put by all the jargon. Precht's book strips philosophy down to its basic ideas, making philosophy accessible to a reader with a casual interest, such as myself.

There are parts that I enjoyed more than others, and now that I'm finished I'm tempted to go back and re-read it again. There have been moments when, during the course of a conversation, I am reminded of an idea that I had read about in this book, but when tryin...more

Memories embellish our lives, but forgetting is what makes them bearable.

What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence.

The meaning of a word is its use in the language.

What opposes the heart is not admitted by the head.

In life, a man commits himself and draws his own portrait.

We examine everything except the quest itself.

Everything in life attains its value by means of contrast. What significance would winning have if losing were not an option?

Natural pleasures are easily gained; it is...more

What I like about such books is that they are so enabling; huge domains of knowledge and study are compressed, filtered but mostly ORGANISED and ANALYSED in such a way that a complete layperson can read the book and be able to approach some of the key issues within those domains.

This book does not only succeed in enabling readers to get a big picture of philosophical questions, or to get some insight into the philosophical thinking pattern; it is also fun and gripping. The tone is never lecturi...more

''What did you think?'' Goodreads.com

Let's just say, who is that you? And how do I know that I'm thinking?

Starting with no basis in philosophical studies but just pure interest, wanted to start reading on some topics searching for answers, and other thoughts. Many books for trying to entry this are or too advanced or just rambling on what old philosophers stated. However this took me from the start, even though I hoped for some kind of answers or new insights, but the most important thing it d...more

As I was rating couple of books with 5 stars I thought I would now need some books to fill the quota of not-that-thrilling books. I got this as a graduation present, since my friends thought I might like it since it's writing about brains both from neurobiological/physiological and philosophical point of view.

This might be great book for those who never went to medical school or studied the subject otherwise, but for me it hasn't by far given too much insights. From my point of view this is a b...more
