Gus Simpson is turning 50, has two 20-something daughters, and her own cooking show which is experiencing a ratings slump. The story revolves around her need to heal from tragedy, develop better relationships with her children, and define who she is and what she wants out of the rest of her life....with a little romance thrown in the side.

One problem I had with The Friday Night Knitting Club is that there were too many darn characters in the book. It's even worse in this book because the boo...more

Gus Simpson pulled her life together after the early death of her husband and twelve year later, has her third cable show on the CookingChannel, and has raised her two girls into their mid-twenties. Now, of course, as she reaches the big 50, changes are in the works. Her bosses want to shake up her show to compete in better markets and bring in a former beauty pageant winner, Carmen Vega to co-host a new, live show, filmed right in Gus' home. The whole family is soon involved and lots of side...more

Diana and I listened to this audio-book while travelling by car from Maryland to Kansas this week. It was a good "read" for a car trip... easy to follow, funny and sad. The themes of the story: getting older, family, friends, love, pain, grief, healing and competition... all wrapped up in one of our favorite things, FOOD, had us smiling and even tearing up a couple times... pleasant book.

A comfortable read, but very predictable. I enjoyed the book, but fear Ms. Jacobs may be falling into the formula fiction category. The book was very similar to "The Friday Night Knitting Club" with the large cast of characters and I again found myself having to ask "Wait, who is this person again?" I didn't feel like I needed all the back story on Carmen, while she was a major character, in the end, I didn't need to know about her life in Spain.
All in all, a decent sum

This story of a widow turning fifty, her relationship with her two twenty-something daughters, her cooking show trials and tribulations, and the interesting people in her life is a most enjoyable read. Likeable characters - even the ones you don't think will be. The cooking show - a fun scenario. I do believe I will go back and read the Friday Night Knitting Club.

I'd read and enjoyed "The Friday Night Knitting Club" and I wasn't disappointed by this second title.

the main character is nearing 50, and I'm a long way off, but her issues are pretty universal; her family problems even more so.

Looking forward to the next title (no pressure!)

I read this book because I LOVED another book by this same author. This book was still good, just not quite as good as her previous novel, even though they weren't related. It was fun to hear about all the zany situations the main character goes through in her TV show...plus made me want to hone up on my cooking skills. Still a good book.

I liked the Friday Night Knitting Club much better. This was not as strong in character development, the characters didn't have any depth, so there was no sympathy towards their struggles and it lacked a strong conflict to carry the book through. I got the feeling that she lost the third quarter of her manuscript.

This is the story of a just turned fifty woman who has her own show on the cooking channel. She has just learned that her show might be canceled and she and her producer are trying to spice up her show.

A sweet, fun story of a television cooking host turning 50 and dealing with challenges, that come from relating to her daughters and from younger competition, in the form of an ex-beauty queen from Spain. It was more lighthearted than The Friday Night Knitting club. A quick enjoyable read.

Disappointed in this book. I loved her first book, the Friday Night Knitting Club, but this one I could not get into. Her characters were sort of likeable but nothing like her first book. When the book has been sitting on the floor by my bed unread for a few days, its time to move on.

I tried to finish this, got 100 pages into it. It just didn't resonate for me, which is odd, as it's about a woman about my age trying to adjust to changes in her world. But it seemed slow and sort of trite and not particularly new. So I gave up.

How do you rate a 3.5? I liked the storyline - well written and thoughtful enough to keep my interest - however it had stuff in it that didn't need to be there. Makes me want to cook more, and especially to eat peaches (the yummy cover picture).

This book is a fun read! Nice summer escapism! The main character is a woman but I think enlightened me who read this would enjoy it, too. The author does occasionally switch to different characters points of view - a few male.

This was an easy summer read. I like Kate Jacobs style, though it almost seems (after reading both books) that her writing is a bit formulaic. I will be interested to see if her next book is the same. Enjoyable book.

I haven't read "The Knitting Club" as of yet, but definitely enjoyed this book. Interesting characters, a nice spin on women of a certain age and the challenges we face. And of course lots food. Who can ask for more?

kind of boring at the beginning. almost didn't want to read the rest after a couple of chapters. . . but I trudged on and kind of wished I didn't. I found it to be predictable. I guess it was entertaining at best.

It was a good book and if I hadn't read Friday Night Knitting Club already I might have given this one another star. That book grabbed me right away and this one took awhile but it's still worth a read.

The female characters in Jacobs' earlier book, The Friday Night Knitting Club, are slightly more interesting, but this book doesn't have the extreme tragedy of FNKC, so I think I like it a bit better.
