I haven't read Chocolat yet, so I almost left this one on the shelf. I don't usually read books out of their "proper order". But the library's only copy of Chocolat was checked out and The Girl With No Shadow looked so appealing that I borrowed it anyway. I have seen the movie Chocolat, but don't know how true to the book it was, so I started reading this without any expectations as to what the characters or mood should be like. Switching between the three narrators was only slight...more

Harris' luscious descriptions of chocolate and other foods, rings like a tinkle bell, and suddenly I'm Pavlov's dog, drooling over pages of the book.
But it's core, this is a book for anyone who's ever found themselves lost on a path. Dante said it best... "How I entered there I cannot truly say, I had become so sleepy at the moment when I first strayed, leaving the path of truth..." I'd put the whole prologue, but you get the drift.
Mystical, evocative, delectable.
I'd share my co...more

Magical sequel to Chocolat, one of my all time favorite books. The story takes place four years later; It is a bit confusing at first, with the story being told in three different voices.....Zozie, Vianne and Anouk. It took me two chapters to realize who was who...suppose I'm a bit slow! The characters are wonderful, Rosette being my favorite. And, like Chocolat, the detailed descriptions of delectable chocolates is mouth watering. A perfect summer read, full of magic and love, it will keep you ...more

I picked this book up to read from the library, knowing that I hadn't read Chocolat, which The Girl with no shadow is the sequel to. So, it took me awhile to understand what was going on, but the book kept me guessing the whole way through. It is a careful read, many things that happen or are talked about are subtle clues on what unfolds. So, it was good sort of a mystery, love story, wrapped into one. So many twists, the author wrote a clever book! Maybe I'll read Chocolat now, kinda backw...more

As a huge fan of Joanne Harris and all her works (especially Chocolat) I was delighted with this Chocolat sequel. At first dismayed with the way Vianne Rocher is now living her life (with none of the earlier passion) I was delighted with the outcome. I was so in love with this tale that I really strugled to put it down - couldn't wait to get to the end, yet was sad when I finally did. Harris really is a genius - she can take you to another world so you lose track of reality!

Enjoyed Chocolat. .let's see how this one goes.

okay 5 days later. I did not enjoy this as much as the 1st book, Vianne has become something of a wet blanket with a young hip/con artist taking over the magic she used to display. There are good reasons mind you but it takes so long to find out what has turned vivacious Vianne into Yanne the bland, you really don't care by the time you get there. But the descriptions of the chocolates are as enticing as ever.

A bit contrived...long, and reminded me of the old TV show Bewitched's Samantha with chocolate on her nose. There was way too much witchcraft and not nearly enough about the life in the small village and its people. The chocolate cafe was sort of incidental...but then again, how much can one write about it...especially fill up another 300 odd age book! It just did not live up to the standard of her last book.

This was good, but...........at first I found it confusing as to "whose" chapter it was. The story is told in three different voices and until I was a paragraph or two into each chapter, sometimes I just couldn't tell.
This is by the author of Chocolat, and it was good, just not the best book I ever read.
If you like magic and mysticism (which I do) then you'll probably enjoy it.

I'm often skeptical of sequels to popular books, but I really enjoyed this book. Joanne Harris adds a new character to this tale, and the little girl in Chocolat is old enough to be a teenager with her own problems. The book creates a lovely sense of suspense. It would make great airplane or beach reading. Beware: it may make you hungry for expensive, delicious chocolate.

I could feel Montmarte and see the chocolates as I read but the plot was way too drawn out for me. When I finally got there, the ending was exciting (although a little cheesy), but it was a boring road. The cast of characters are interesting but I felt they could have been developed more.

This is a sequel to Joanne Harris' book Chocolat. It isn't her best book but as usual still very well written and engaging. She takes you back to recap the original story weaving it through this story told 4 years later in The Girl with No Shadow. Still a great read.

Magic and chocolate inhabit the pages of this book. Every chapter is in the voice of the mother, the daughter or their new friend who may or may not be all the she appears to be. Overall it was a good read though some bits were a bit confusing.

I love anything by Joanne Harris. I'm one third into this one and find the new character, Zosie, fascinating.
Done! I never thought I'd find myself enjoying a good witch/bad witch story, but this one had me all the way through.

I didn't like this as well as Chocolat. I liked catching up with the original characters, but is was dark and gloomy. The book had an interesting premise, but the ending doesn't live up to the hype leading up to it.

A lovely return to the tantalizing world of "Chocolat". A moving account of a woman's struggle to return to her own identity. Very descriptive world created here. Best read with a box of fine chocolate.

I enjoyed reading the sequel to Chocolat. Interesting characters and setting. I liked that it was told from all three characters points of view. It has an unique take on good and evil.

I've read almost all of harris's books- fluff? I'm a francophile and sometimes these just fit the bill. So far, so good. More entertainment bang for the buck than sitting down with tv

I liked this better than Chocolat in some ways. I was reading it sort of lazily so the constant change in voice was occasionally confusing (especially in the beginning).

Try as I might, I couldn't really get into this one. I just didn't care what happened next. I stopped at about 170 pages and returned it to the library unfinished.

This is a sequel to "Chocolat" a story and movie that I enjoyed a lot. I have only read 4 chapters. Thus far it is good. And, it is a book that keeps my interest.
