The characters in the The Last Knight are entirely believable, which is one of the books strongest points. Mike is just what you’d imagine a modern knight errant to be, sweet, and just slightly moronic, and his squire perfectly embodies the street wise sidekick every hero needs. The world that Bell creates is fresh and new, and the plot is hardly ever predictable (which is a great plus).

This book's style is one where the POV of two characters are shown. Each Chapter takes alternating turns between the first person view of two main characters: Michael and Fisk. I've always thought that this style was really cool and is one of my favourites. However, Hilari Bell didn't quite pull it off in this book. It succeeded in advancing the story or telling it efficiently for there were times when just Michael's POV or just Fisk's POV wouldn't have been enough (because of situations like n

The story was ok, but when all was said and don't, I felt like it was a waste of time. I could have re-read something else and enjoyed myself more. The quote on the cover about what a great writer the author is... well, clearly that reviewer and I have a difference of opinion.
I read this genre because the world building is so much fun to read and explore. Here, there really wasn't much of that. And the characters are very flat and there isn't much development of them either.

Even though I'm reading a lot of books in a row by this author, I did not get tired of her writing style or the patterns she uses. The books are changed just enough not to resemble each other too closely, but honest enough to feel only like witnessing her development as a writer. I think this new series is my favorite so far.

This book really surprised me. A friend loaned it to me along with a few others that... were slow going... so it took me awhile to decide to read this book. I'm glad I did. This was a fun fantasy romp in a new world. A YA book that lacks sex or angst was what I needed after the others the friend loaned. This one was refreshingly free of all that *oh, the pain of existence* crap.

If you haven't read any of Hilari Bell's novels, you should.
The Last Knight, the first novel in The Knight and Rouge Series, is a delightful read. The interplay between the protagonists - Sir Michael Severson, a knight errant and his freshly-reformed squire, Fisk - is witty and entertaining. Their misbegotten adventure to return damsel not-so-in-distress to the prison they mistakenly freed her from is a well-plotted and cleanly written (unlike that sentence).

I went on a Hilari Bell kick after reading The Wizard Test and Fall of a Kingdom, and this book didn't compare to those two. I feel like I'm pickier when it comes to young adult books, because there is so much that could be present that I don't like. Overly childish and irritating main characters that act like any regular child I could encounter in real life just don't do it for me. Simplistic plots don't usually interest me either. Some young adult novels hit the nail on the head with their whi

A good book. A bit slow in places.
Michael is an errant knight. His father wants him to become steward for his older brother, but he does not want to live his life in the place where he was born. He and his father get into a big fight, and his father makes an off hand comment about being an errant knight. That comment set his path. It must be noted, that the age of Knights has passed.

Two guys are better than one
There’s something about stories following two guys as they combine forces that just gets me every time. Holmes and Watson, Dean and Sam Winchester, a friendship duo like that is an automatic “YES PLEASE!” for me. Hilari Bell’s Knight and Rogue series is no exception.

This book kind of fell into my hands. It was a Proof Copy and the cover looked very "young adult"-ish. But I went ahead a read it and it was pretty fun.
It was interesting to see how the author alternated character perspectives through each chapter. In other words, the book was about two main characters. Chapter 1 was from one character's perspective, then chapter 2 was from the other character's perspective, and it kept alternating. It gave you a good feel for both characters More...

One word: hilarious. I usually hate characters like Fisk - no honor, "dashing" rogue, womanizer, irritating sarcasm (I love sarcasm, but not the type that's usually employed by adolescent males). Fisk is certainly a womanizer (more on that later), but he's hilarious in every other respect. Few books cause me to laugh out loud; this one did.
Michael, too, was not without his sarcasm. Hilari Bell used a very interesting method of first person narration that works very well when More...

oh man. i am kind of in love with fisk. there are more of these, right? because i need to know his backstory.
OTHER THAN THAT, i really enjoyed this. michael was a little insufferable, but i felt that was intentional. i mean, he decided to become a knight errant in an act of rebellion. i love knights and i love stupid boys who have honor, but sometimes he sounded like he belonged in a disney cartoon.

Excellent book. It was an easy read since it was written for tennagers but it had very engaging characters. I am on to the next in the series.

Michael is a knight errant far after it's the fashionable thing to do (try 200 years), and Fisk is his squire. When the boys free a "damsel" from a tower, they had no idea she was being held on murder charges. This sends them on a quest for both of them to redeem themselves. This is a character-centric story told in alternate points of view between Michael and Fisk, which helps the reader get to know them each boy as he sees himself and as the other sees him.

The Last Knight is a quirky romp through a world of humor, magica, and friendship. And a world in which the slightest error can render one unredeemed. The less-than-heroic, Fisk, knew this when he committed . . . whatever crime he committed. And he knew the unredeemed had no rights—not to freedom or a future. Or even life. He just didn’t know it would mean being rendered squire to the sole knight errant of the current era. And when Noble Sir, himself, becomes unredeemed . . . things can only go

Hilari Bell is quickly gaining my reader-loyalty. Lighter in premise than her Farsala trilogy, this book nevertheless serves up plenty of action and intrigue as the well-meaning actions of "knight-errant" Michael and his reluctant squire Fisk lead them into a worthy adventure.

Sir Michael Sevenson, a rather noble, self-proclaimed 18-year-old knight-errant, and Fisk, a street-smart con artist (who reluctantly works as Sir Michael's squire) make an odd team, but they must work together after a well-intentioned rescue of a damsel in distress leads them to free an accused murderess.
The characters take turns narrating chapters in this fun, fast-moving fantasy adventure. Both Sir Michael and Fisk are very likeable and well-developed as characters, and I look More...

This is a fun, clean read for YA. Somewhat predictable plot, and no outstanding characters, but fun to read nonetheless. My favorite character was Ceciel even though she only appears in part of the book. I understand that this author has written another series with a girl as the main character, I will need to read one of those. This series reminds me a little of the "Rangers Apprentice" series which my husband has really enbjoyed reading. I will definitely recommend this series to

Ah...what another great book from Hilari Bell!
Although, the relationship between the two main characters reminds me uncannily of BBC's "Merlin" (a television show I greatly enjoy, watch it sometime!!). If you don't know what I mean, you should watch a few episodes. Especially in the later ones, there is definitely similarity!! All the banter, and that sort of "I hate you, but you're my friend" friendship... ah yep.
Well, anyway, comment on this review if you know

When Michael, the fourth son of a nobleman, decides to become an errant knight long after knights have passed from vogue he earns a reluctant squire, Fisk, to help him in his chivalrous quests. Discovering a lady imprisoned in a tower he rescues her and then learns that she was held for murdering her husband, a well-connected baron. Now Michael and Fisk must recapture her or be permanently outcast from their society.

This was a fun adventure. I enjoyed the characters, and having the chapters flip back and forth between the two main character's thoughts gave the reader a deeper perspective into their perspectives! Though at times it did sort of make the story seem a bit choppy.
It was a good character set up for the rest of the story, but still had it's own adventure and plot. I think I'll try the 2nd book and see how it goes.

Michael and Fisk catapulted to the top of my favorite characters list. They aren't the only ones up there, and they may not even be at the very tippy top (it will take a lot to knock Sam and Frodo into anything that looks like second place) but I LOVE these boys. Love them. Hilari Bell could write about them forever and I would read it. One of the best relationship stories ever. And funny, which is always good.

Blend mystery into a medieval fantasy to produce this compelling novel. Sir Michael Stevenson had decided to break the 200 year lack of knights and become a knight errant. After Michael pays off con artist Frisk’s fine, Frisk becomes Michael’s unwilling squire. Sir Michael frees a damsel in distress - Lady Ceciel, only to later find out she was being held for the murder of her husband. During the course of Michael and Frisk’s adventure to recapture Lady Ceciel, they encounter magicked animals

I try to be generous with my stars, but I just couldn't give it more than 3 or 3.5. It was just an OK book. It started out a bit abruptly and they didn't explain a few things in the book very well, such as the magica plants and animals and the Gifts people have. They also said 'tis a lot, but no other old fashioned words. The story can hardly count as fantasy and wasn't that interesting.

Interesting book. A fourth son of a baron decides to make his way as a "Knight Errent" which apparently rights wrongs. However, they haven't been around for many years so when people hear it they laugh. He finds Fisk that helps an old man up the steps where they are accused of crimes and decides he is a good person at heart. He "redeems" Fisk and makes him his squire. They then set off on adventure but he frees a "damsel" that ends up being accused of murder. He now

I believe I have discovered a new favorite author! Hilari Bell blends all of my favorite characteristics of fantasy - action, suspensful plots, magic, loyalty and trust, and just enough romance to keep things interesting - into one stunning novel. And believe me, the other two in this series are just as good.

I think that young people who enjoy the medieval genre will really get a kick out of this updated version of a knight's tale. The sarcastic, cynical, unwilling squire and the too-good-to-be-true can't-tell-a-lie knight take turns narrating this whodunit story. This book is entertaining, fresh, and fanciful.

Like a classic buddy cop film, Michael the knight errant plays the straight man to Fisk's ex-con turned squire, and the two have some hilarious adventures together. Bound together by duty, they slowly become friends as both young men help each other to achieve their goals.
