I spent 7/8 of this book feeling that there was no initial momentum, no development and no direction. I was moderately interested by the vivid (if repetitive) descriptions of life in the military backwater the characters inhabit. But the, as the Melville House blurb states, the developments close to the end are "startling." The final head-long rush to resolution is worth - just barely - the investment of reader attention that leads to it.

Sneaky move by Melville House to include this in their "Art of the Novella" series. At 300+ pages, I'd hardly consider this "shorter than a novel." Still, I'm super pleased they did. This novel's a snapshot of an era in Czarist Russia. Published in 1905, and not translated until 1916, this work has many lines which serve as ironic and foretelling precursors to the two World Wars that lay in the nation's wait.
