An interesting book about Fleet weddings, yet the characters, so typical of the period, were less than likable until the very end, which made it hard to keep picking up the book and continuing to read. The writing is good, however, and I'm glad I persevered to the end. It's unlikely to be a re-read, although I usually find something to like better the second time around, and this might be no exception.

Another enjoyable Layton.

First read 23 July 2009.

This has recently been selected from an International VBB on bookcrossing, and just as I was about to parcel it, I thought I'd reread it again quickly. I'm glad I did as I really didn't remember it very well. It was a very pleasant interlude between end of school year report writing etc, and makes a good read. I hope it will continue to be appreciated. I don't think I've read a book by this author which I did not enjoy.

I learned the difference between Newgate and the Fleet, what a time to be poor and young. Unfortunately, in this tale, there were only a couple of likeable characters and they were not the hero or the heroine.

Edith Layton wrote her first novel when she was ten. She bought a marbleized notebook and set out to write a story that would fit between its covers. Now, an award-winning author with more than thirty novels and numerous novellas to her credit, her criteria have changed. The story has to fit the reader as well as between the covers.

Graduating from Hunter College in New York City with a degree in c
