There's a great blurb on the inside flap of this book's cover suggesting, "Matthews' bookish doings exemplify a way of life." This strikes me as an accurate description of a book that alternately speaks about the collection, pursuit, and reading of rare books, but also devotes as much time to musings (sometimes, though not always, inspired by books) about matters as diverse as time, language, valuation, and memory.
