I'm not big into bio's because I don't feel many celebrities have anything significant to offer, mostly because they lead such different lives than normal people (over the course of time). It becomes hard to relate to their story. Marshall Mather's story is equally difficult to relate to, on both sides of the spectrum, from dirt poor working at Little Ceasars to practical billionaire. But it's the honest telling of the drastic difference from welfare to uber fame that makes it so entertaining. W...more

I'm not quite sure what I expected out of this book. I used to LOVE Eminem and not that I don't like him now but I'm not really into rap like I used to be. So for me reading this took me back to the time when I was into all of that stuff.
I think the book was fairly well written. Being a rapper it seems obvious that Eminem has a way with words, but the way he says things is so simple. He doesn't sugar coat or try to play around the issue. He says what he needs to say and that's it. ...more

I randomly picked this up at the library. I'm not a huge eminem fan at all, but was curious about the book. It's not well written, and I don't want to sound snobby, but he does only have an 8th grade education and sometimes that comes across in his language and sense of humor. But I did leave the book with the sense that he is a good guy, a good dad, and definitely talented. His motivation when young to make it was impressive; he was super poor and a young dad. He does write some funny stuff too...more

I quite literally loved this book, I suppose it doesn't matter than I'm a fan of his .. haha. No, in all seriousness, I liked that it was actually from his voice, not w/ grammar corrections and omitting swear words and what not, it felt more like he was talking to me/the reader. I loved that before the book even started he had a dedication to Proof, it was real hearfelt. I also love the pictures he shared and the pictures of his lyric sheets and what not. It was nice to hear that he's the same g...more

Eminem fans, people interested in an artist's progress
First, let me just say that this is gorgeous coffee table book. They made a great choice with the layout editing and the pictures & type. I also like the concept for the cover, hiding the red scribbles underneath, but i think it's ultimately somewhat of a failure. That material (I don't know what it is, plastic?) seems to crack easily; I saw one at Borders which was completely destroyed. Also, it's slippery: every time I forget (or decide, no, I just wasn't gripping it tight enough last time...more

While I'm certainly not a big rap fan, I do like some of Eminem's music, and I also love reading musician's autobiographies. This one is a little different to say the least. If you can get past the street slang and invectives, it's definitely interesting to read about Marshall Mathers' rise to fame. I think he's a lot smarter and more talented that many people might think.

Not particularly personal, not really revealing... Is this a quick cash in because the guy's been locked away in his house the past few years? An okay and rather quick read, but I doubt it'll be particularly satisfying to fans of Eminem. I picked up my copy at the library, thankfully.

Maybe some people shouldn't write their own autobiography. Maybe they should stay quiet!
This is all about his take on his music career - none of the good gossip that you would expect.
He has an eighth grade education. A talented rhymer, but really not much else

I like Eminem's music a lot but have always had problems with his personal life. In this autobiography, Marshal Mathers, the man behind the rapper, does his best to tell his story and convince listeners like me that he's a normal guy.
He doesn't do a very good job. While certain glimpses into his rise to fame benefit from first-hand narration, most of it makes him sound like a pathetic celebrity. Still, the stories behind certain songs and the copies of hand-written lyrics are inte...more

I'm only partially through this book, but I'm enjoying the straight-forward style. I loved the paragraph where Eminem writes that he is a regular suburban dad, taking care of the kids, doing stuff around the house and mowing the lawn. Then he says that he mows the lawn naked with a chainsaw. There is always a quick wit lurking around the edges of his writing.

This book hardly describes Eminem's self. The book only shows his work ethic and fails to describe the controversy surrounding his life thoroughly.
