You Bring Out The Mexican In Me
by Sandra Cisneros

You bring out the Mexican in me.
The hunkered thick dark spiral.
The core of a heart howl.
The bitter bile.
The tequila lágrimas on Saturday all
through next weekend Sunday.
You are the one I'd let go the other loves for,
surrender my one-woman house.
Allow you red wine in bed,
even with my vintage lace linens.
Maybe. Maybe.

For you.

You bring out the Dolores del Río in me.
The Mexican spitfire in me.
The raw navajas,...more

Hieroglyph of bones to decipher.
Love, if at all, comes later."

the little fear I feel

I haven't a clue of the who of you."

I hoped I'd walk away feeling like "Hell yes, I am a juicy beautiful powerful raw woman, hear me roar." Not so much. I do like her menses references. But the collection reads a little like the same poem over and over again, which was disappointing. She overuses certain words. And something about the poems was slightly crazed and desperate, which I know is the honest raw appeal and not the sum of her as a woman, but there was a little vibe of "I own my sexuality, do you like my ...more

I adore Cisneros's short story prose - she is truly one of the masters of language when she's in her element - but not one of her poems was memorable to me. Charles Baudelaire is another writer whose prose had no equal, while his poems were good but rarely impressive. As far as I'm concerned though, Cisneros can write as many poems as she wants - I'll always be kissing her feet for giving us "Woman Hollering Creek."

I'm biased. I'm not even sure if it holds up well all these years after I read it, but Sandra just does it for me. I wanted to write like her as a young writer. I lusted after her as a young man. Now, I think my relationship with this book is based a lot on nostalgia. Much of it has her spilling her purse out on the table for everyone to see, but I make no apologies for loving it 10 years later.

Poetry. These didn't work for me. I didn't connect with the subject matter and I absolutely didn't connect with the awful rhymes and the sense that I was reading the same poem over and over.

Some of her titles, on the other hand, are fantastic and I like how sexual her poems are, even if the writing itself didn't grab me. The two poems I liked the best: "Bay Poem from Berkeley" and "After Everything."

Saucy, sassy, and honest. Cisnero's collection of poetry is a complete turn-on! Absolutely loved it. This, as well as her other books, is so damn colorful and sensuous that it just inspires you to imagine in technicolor and smellavision. It certainly inspired an interesting poetry streak a few months ago.

I took a women in creativity class and this was one of the books we read. I'm not big on poetry but I cannot help but to be seduced by these poems. They are feminist,Mexican-American, and sexually explicit without apologizing for it. Once again, simple honest observational writing.

I was first introduced to the poetry of Sandra as an undergrad by a fabulous professor, RC-Davis Udiano. I remember when he took turns in class having men and women read her poem entitled, Loose Woman. It was so powerful. No man can read her poetry like a woman who has lived it.

I love contemporary poetry and Sandra Cisneros has some of the best out there. It is complex, raw, sexy, biting, in~your~face, unashamed, and oh so many more superlatives. "Loose Woman" affects me on many levels ~ exactly what good art should do.

It's not about Sandra Cisneros. I luv me some Sandra. I just can't read a whole book of poems, I'm a schemer. The ones I did read I found inspirational. A sister Guadalupana. She writes about her period and her clitoris in ways that, well,

Like a tango, salsa, musky summer night, Mexican food, women with dark shiny hair, and men with dark eyes. This poetry has it's own scent and taste. When everything you've been reading seems bland, this revives the senses.

Ay, Muchacha. I am not big fan of poetry; I generally find it to be too contrived. This tome kicks some serious nalga. Bam! Rich, complex and sincere. I want this lady to be my friend! No - better yet, I want her to be my mother!

Beautiful poetry from a strong and independent woman. Loved her strength and her passion, showing both the hard and sharp features of being a woman and the delicate and sensitive side that has learned of love and lost it.

Fuck yeah...makes me wish I spoke fluent Spanish. Cisneros alternates between English and Spanish in her poems. She writes from the ovaries. If I ever meet Sandra I will buy her a beer and light her cigar.

I loved Cisneros' novel The House on Mango Street. I like her voice and read a few of the poems in this before purchasing it and just find her outlook very interesting. I can't wait to read through it.

Loved this book of poetry. It was my first real entre into the confessional poems of modernist poets. I really loved her imagery, metaphors, and directness. The voice of these poems is riveting.

The poems in this book are liquid and delish. I can't find my copy and that drives me nuts. This set of poems empowered me a a woman and delighted my senses. Gorgeous I tell you. Gorgeous.

This collection has a sexual tension that I found revealing and Cisnero's take on male desire isn't much different from my own male desire. I found a kindred sister in this collection.

This is, very possibly, in my top 5 EVER for poetry collections. The last poem (same as the title) is killer. So empowering. I like to read it when I'm feeling beaten down by life.
