This novel is likely to remind genre readers of at least two books, even though it is set in India in 1942 and is about officer-cadets being trained for combat in the region. Major Craig is a veteran of the war in Burma – while he made it out of the jungle, as did most of his company, he did lose his second in command, John Ramsay. And now Craig has been assigned to an Officer’s Training School near Pune, as has Ramsay’s younger brother, Bob. Craig sees in Bob Ramsay the same thing he saw in ...more

Set in Burma during WW2, the novel's title aptly describes the main theme of the book – those soldiers who have what it takes ( and more) and those who haven't.

I enjoyed the characterization in the novel, the psychology behind the battle plans etc. But I could not follow the actual plans themselves or picture in that context what I ought to have been able to capture in my mind's eye. Paul Scott was born in London in 1920. He served in the army from 1940 to 1946, mainly in India and Malaya. He is the author of thirteen distinguished novels including his famous The Raj Quartet. In 1977, Staying On won the Booker Prize. Paul Scott died in 1978.
