The last time I read the second book was about a decade ago, so the finer details escaped me. A lot of the times in the beginning I was going "HUH?? I don't remember this happening!" In fact, I remember the first book much better.
At the beginning I complained a bit to someone that I felt Coville had suddenly pulled out this old, nearly lost prophecy about a more powerful and dangerous enemy for the unicorns out of the blue. Yes, since it's an old prophecy that nobody excep...more

Bruce Coville has been my favorite author since I read his Rod Albright Alien Adventure series in fourth grade. I have been waiting several years for another book in the Unicorn Chronicles with much anticipation, and I was so excited when I found out he was concluding the series. So, you can imagine how surprised I was when I got withing the last 5-10 pages of the book and realized that there was no way for the story to wrap up in that short space... It's not the end of the series! On the one h...more
Okay, I admit, I'm prejudiced--Bruce is my best male friend, my writing buddy, and he read DARK WHISPERS to me as I read BLOODHOUND to him.
That's all beside the point. This is the third book in the series. It was very good, and not at all slow!

This is the third book in The Unicorn Chronicles, and I think it is the strongest book in the series so far. Cara and her assorted companions are on a quest to prevent the Hunters from entering Luster to kill the unicorns (and yes, I'm aware of how silly that sounds. Somehow the book is better than that). At the same time, her father has teamed up with some unusual allies to rescue his wife from an ethereal prison. As a protagonist, Cara has never had much personality, and I've always been m...more
This is book 3 of 4
Book 1: Into the Land of the Unicorns
Book 2: Song of the Wanderer
Book 4: The Last Hunt
This is a great series -- especially in audio format. In this installment, Cara is given the task of getting a story from the centaurs, her father is searching for the rainbow prison to rescue her mother, and Cara's grandmother and the unicorns are preparing for war.
This book does touch on some tough topics, so younger readers should proceed with caution.

I really like Bruce Coville's Unicorn Chronicles, and I enjoyed this third book in the series, too. They are about a young girl, Cara Hunter, who finds herself in the land of the unicorns. In this third installment in the series, Cara is assigned by her grandmother, who is the queen of the unicorns, to go into the land of the centaurs to try to find out who or what The Whisperer is. In the meantime, Beloved and her ferocious hunters are about to invade Luster, the delvers are causing more tro...more
I am ecstatic to read the third in a series... truth be told, there was a period of time I worried Coville had died. After all, it only took him nine years to publish the next story in the Unicorn Chronicles.
I definitely have matured since reading Song of the Wanderer, finding his writing much simpler and less action-packed than I remembered. Nonetheless, I was not disappointed with the latest book and its new twists. Certainly, some were predictable, but it always was fun and int...more

The first two novels of this series I read an older printing of (this series isn't available on the Kindle, unfortunately), and the third novel, Dark Whispers, was my first contact with the reprints. They got a new artist, which I think is a travesty as the covers for Into the Land of the Unicorns and Song of the Wanderer are simply gorgeous and fit the series perfectly. This was a nicely done, and long awaited title in the Unicorn Chronicles series. This is very different from the titles most Coville fans are familiar with...my teacher is an alien, etc. This is not laugh out loud funny by any means. Cara is in Lustor and willing as always to help the unicorns who are led by one who used to be her grandmother in human form. She is struggling with her personal heritage of being a friend of the unicorns and a descendent of their worst enemy. Or is Beloved and her ...more

*Stands up* Hello, friends. I'm Brigid and when I was 9 years old, I was a unicorn addict. I have now been sober for almost ten years now ... well, except for that I went into a brief relapse so that I could read this book.

This book lacked the spark, the innocence, that the first two books had. This one was longer (not that I would complain about the size) and it had a distinctly different tone than Into the Land of the Unicorns and Song of the Wanderer.
Throughout the entire novel, the point of view switches between a multitude of characters. (Although the book is told in third person, the view does change -- almost every chapter.) Just as you get into the story of Cara (or the Dimblethum, or the delve...more

This series is amazing! The first book (published in 1991) was a favorite of mine when I was 10, but only recently I've read books 2 and 3 (which weren't published until 1999 and 2008) and realized what good quality children's or young adult's -- or even adult's -- books these are. The plot is so intricate and engaging, I could not put the book down until I reached the end, page 462 -- a cliffhanger! -- and now I am anxiously waiting for the final book in the series.
much better than the other two, i thought. this one was more action packed. what i didn't like was that every chapter was from a different characters point of view. that isn't really a problem, but i didn't like how the times were different. one chapter the characters would be trekking for days when the next chapter those characters deal with a situation that was only one day. the timing didn't add up. other than that, good job
I LOVED this. It's not ok to release to Sam yet. Apparently Bruce Coville went the way of JK Rowling. This book is much more intense, scarier, and even harder to read than the first Unicorn Chronicles book. It looks like #4 isn't out in pb yet so I'm hoping it is soon. #3 ends with a cliffhanger so I don't want to wait too long. I might give in and buy #4 in hardcover :-)
I know that someday Sam will love all of these books but she's not ready for them yet.

Did Bruce Coville have ANY idea of what he was getting himself into when he started writing Into the Land of the Unicorns? Wow. This serious is AMAZING. I'll admit, the beginning has some slow spots but once I started really getting into the story, I couldn't put it down! Wowsa!
The combination of character development on top of adding new characters was an awesome feeling. And I seriously don't know what's going to happen. Like at all. But the lack of knowledge keeps me intrigued.

Wow... I was pleasantly surprised by how much better this novel was than the first two. Though some of the plot is predictable, the plot certainly thickens.
What's most interesting is how the lines between good and evil start to blur into each other, and how no one, not even the unicorns, is entirely innocent. I'm now very excited to see how the characters embrace their own darkness in the final novel.

I read the first two books in this series years ago, and the third one finally came out last year so of course I had to re-read the others and finish what I once started. Unfortunately, the author has not yet finished the whole series and there is at least one more book to be written. All I can say is that it had better not take as long as the third one to be published!
Cara is on a search for a story from the centaurs. Her father is on a search for her mother. This book takes the Chronicles farther into the secrets behind the hate of Beloved to the Unicorns. It takes the secrets of why the delvers hate the unicorns and it uncovers the secrets that the Unicorns have tried to hide.
Even though I hadn't read the first two installments of this series, I was able to quickly get up to speed on what was going on and who the characters were. The audio version is great since it is done by Full-Cast Audio and the characters are all distinctly voiced. Now I can't decide to wait for the next installment or go back to book one.
Um...this one was really good, but it got kind of slow in the middle. And I was a little confused with all of the perspective-jumping, that was new, and it dragged a little bit.
But this is still a good one. I mean, you can't have The Unicorn Chronicles without this in your collection.

Lost the thread of this series in the long wait for this book, and probably never would have read it if a friend of mine hadn't basically forced it on me. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but I just wasn't interested. I almost felt too old for it, even though I usually love reading young adult books.
The third in the Unicorn Chronicles I read this thinking it was the end of the trilogy...but it's not, there must be more coming out?
The adventures of Kara Diane Hunter and the world of Luster kept me enthralled for the first three novels. I hope that the next ones will stay true to the series.

So far i've liked the series very much. Each book is longer and longer. I felt the 3rd book a little too boring for me, I think it could have been written with fewer pages and still been exciting. I wonder how the next book will be.
It's obvious that the author is trying to write an epic adventure at this point but he didn't begin strongly enough for that to work. Still, a fun little read and I loved the concept of the Rainbow prison.
An exciting end to an enchanting series. We disagreed on the ending. Some thought it was perfect, some thought Cara made the wrong decision. Still a wonderful Chronicle of the magical creatures.
It was a really good book. I haven't read the first two for a while, so I liked this book, because it explained things that happened in the first two. What I didn't like was the ending. It totally leaves you hanging with so many questions left unanswered. Besides the ending, it was really good.

Great book for those who have already read books 1 into the land of the unicorn and book 2 song of the wander - it continues the story from where it was left off in book 2 song of the wanderer - it ends leading into the next book and fans will want to have book 4 the last hunt ready to read.
