4.0 out of 5 stars Maggie O'Dell enters the Hot Zone in this new thriller by Alex Kava..., January 10, 2009
This review is from: Exposed (Maggie O'Dell) (Hardcover)
This was an entertaining biomedical thriller. It had enough science to inform a reader about the resultant disease and the ease of transmission of a lethal virus (Ebola Zaire) and an adequate amount of suspense to keep me guessing as to the identity and motivations of the criminal mastermind behind the deviou...more

Were it not for my mother, I never would have read this book. Earlier tonight, I sold the book on Half.com, and as the 2 of us searched through the 500+ books I have listed, to find this one, she mentioned that it was the prequel to 'Black Friday', which I read earlier this year, but that it dealt with the spread of a virus, not blowing up a mall.

Book 6 in the Maggie O'Dell series focuses on a deadly biological attack against several seemingly-unconnected people. Caught in the attack, along with her boss, Maggie and her partner RJ Tully have to figure out the attacker's game before more people die. The stakes go up, the tension mounts, and Tully saves the day. (Thank goodness.)
OK, so if it sounds like I'm giving the story short shrift, it's probably because I think Kava gave the book's topic, with all its terrifying implication...more

I've been a bit disappointed with some of the "middle" books in the Maggie O'Dell series, but I thought this one was a darned good read. I think I managed to put it down -- briefly! -- about twice after I started it this morning.

I've been meaning to read this since it came out in paperback, the first chapter was in the paperback editions of the last three books in the series. So, was it worth the wait? In short, yes. Maggie O'Dell is more believable than many other female leads, she's irritable and temperamental. She uses her background in medicine, not to solve the case, but to try to figure out what is wrong with her and as a side effect drives herself up the wall repeatedly. The characters are carefully built up...more
I don't know why certain mystery novels catch my eye. I must say, I really like the cover art. In any case, I tend to gravitate towards FBI Agents over cops, and always over Private Investigators. And with the tale surrounding some type of deadly plague, we readers were bound for some messy deaths.
The book proved to be a quick read, fun but somewhat forgettable. I think this is what they call a "Beach Read." Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing - lots of twists and tu...more

I have been following Kava’s Maggie O’Dell series from book 1 and I am happy to say that this sixth installment is one of the best I read.
Maggie and her boss receive an anonymous letter that leads them to a house where a woman if dying with a contagious disease. They all have to be quarantined and soon the virus threatening them has a name: Ebola Zaire. One of the deadliest viruses around.

Maggie O’Dell is an FBI profiler caught up in a home-grown terrorist attack. While following a lead placed in a box of donuts, Maggie and her supervisor are exposed to an unknown virus and quarantined. Although she has yet to feel any symptoms, one of the victim’s dies. Maggie is able to follow leads through a laptop she is given and notices similarities to the names of the victims and the names from previous unsolved cases. She realizes someone is playing with the FBI and it is someone clos...more
This one was really good, maybe even, the best one todate. I love these kind of stories. A fiendish killer, sending a deadly Virus by mail. Maggie and her boss, Cunningham, become exposed to the virus and she is locked down in "The Slammer", a medical facility in an army facility. Great stuff, love the way the characters interact in this one also. Scary stuff also, the way these viruses can cause such major devastation if they fall into the wrong hands. Just starting "Damaged"...more
Excellent, learned more about Ebola Zaire and others I didn't know about. Maggie O'Dell under the "gun" once again. Kava is the master! The scenario Kava builds is so completely plausible, it is scary. You never know what is going on the minds of the people around you. Everyone has their demons, but some choose to act.
I cleaned out the whole Kava section in my town. Sorry everybody! The'll be back in a week, can't put them down! I will have to check the county before we lose...more

This book is every bit as good as Kava gets. Psychological thriller!!!
People are getting mysterious packages of money in the mail. And then are exposed to a nasty....(I'll leave that for the book)
I love the Maggie O'Dell books. The characters are well defined. Kava gives the reader just enough clues that you can almost figure it out. After she reveals the conclusion, I like to re-read it and see how the clues are all there if I was just smart enough to put them together.

Alex Kava's Exposed rose to the top of my TBR pile. (Actually TBL-to be listened). The last couple of Maggie O'Dell books had lagged in plotting. However it seems Alex is back to top form again.
I listened while putting up Christmas decorations and errands and didn't do a good job because I was drawn into the novel. Great pacing without characterization suffering. Quick read. Took the biological exposure topic and didn't get stuck in all the medical minutia. Recommended.

I took a quick look at the other reviews, and most of them think this is one of the best books on the Maggie O'Dell series, but I'm afraid I don't quite agree with them.
The theme is quite interesting and it's a nice "change of scenery" to have the main character locked in a room for the most part of the book, but then it all seems a bit disoriented, I didn't find the book fast paced, and even though the mystery is there - we want to know who the bad guy is, and if more people wil...more

Not a fan of thrillers all that much. I know this author is quite popular and since a friend of mine gave me this book, I thought I'd give it a go. It was interesting and held my attention. I managed to read it rather quickly. Although it was entertaining, I doubt I will specifically seek out another book by this author. Still, if I happen to come across another, I may give it a go.

I made it four stars because the story is original - it involves innocent people being infected with ebola - the Army biological weapons team and the FBI are trying to figure it out. Maggie O'Dell is exposed and spends several days in isolation, where she meets a tall, handsome army doctor. It's good listening to while driving because it's not too complicated and not too long (only 7 cds).
A rather predictable thriller. In this book FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell is exposed to a form of Ebola virus when she goes into a home investigating a threat to her office. The killer, it turns out, has some kind of obsession with old serial killers, the Unibomber, Jeffrey Dahmer, etc.
I started reading Alex Kava after a friend told me she was from Omaha. Her early books are better than her later ones, but this one was okay. A little freaky because it puts into perspective how deadly viruses actually are and how easily they could be used in biological warfare. Had it figured out, but it was an interesting read.
After I read a serious book, I need to read something for escapism and sheer pleasure. I had not read Alex Kava before, but she kept my attention with this story of FBI agents being exposed to the Ebola Zaire virus. It sounds awful, but this is my kind of escape reading. I'll read her again.

This wasn't bad at all. Even if a little too simplistic for the plot development (Kava is great at the whole "profiler" writing, but when she tries to combine that along with bioterrorism-revenge, she doesn't do quite well), the book is fun and an easy read
Good book for the most part...wish that the author had not waited until the last pages to finally bring every thing together...seems like all of the detecting was done in the last couple of chapters instead of some clues being dropped along the way.
Really enjoyed this book. It was hard to put down, the plot moved along. One of the better Maggie O'Dell books. Creepy because it deals with using a deadly virus as a means of revenge. Makes you realize how quickly a virus can spread.
As usual, Alex Kava wrote another 'can't put down book'. A serial killer, deadly virus, and a cast of likeable characters with a 'who done it' [which I actually managed to guess:] make this a book you don't lose interest in.
I just love books with disease outbreaks! They are just so disgusting, yet so very entertaining! This one was a real change for the series as a whole, too. And though it was surprisingly sad, its fast-pace made it hard to put down! The structure separated it from the previous books as well - I really enjoyed the incorporation of the old letters. The plot was also more unpredictable than some of the earlier books. Only two more books are left in the series to date. I really hope that more develop...more

I love Kava's books and this is no different.
I must say that this one was terrifying. To think that something can be unleashed to the public, all of us unaware, unprotected and unable to stop it once it starts...
Heaven help us if this was ever real.
A good read.

This is a very very light, hyperbolic, extreme mystery that is not quite as good as the series has been--it is mostly about evil and fear, which is not what I look for in a murder mystery, so not my cup of tea.
