With a title like this one, how can you resist? This book actually is a systematic treatment of 45 truly awful diseases grouped by cause (autoimmune, bacterial, etc). Each entry includes a general description and list of symptoms, with more extensive information in text of diagnosis, prognosis, treatment with sidebar “of note…” random facts about someone who may have suffered from the disease, or some interesting sidelight about the history of the disease. The style of the longer treatments ...more

First off, this is not a book for the faint of heart. It is, however, the perfect read for those with an off-the-wall sense of humor.
Mr. DiClaudio has compiled a list of forty-five of the most outlandish, obscure, and downright nasty diseases that you're likely to ever run across. Hopefully, on second thought, you'll never run across any of them, but in case you do, if you've read this book you'll at least be prepared for the horrid and...more

Don't read this if you don't have a good sense of humor! Some people may become offended at the lighthearted manner this book uses to teach, but I believe it is important to keep a sense of humor about everything, no matter how grim.
I would actually classify this as a humor book, although it is a factual book giving an overview of unusual diseases. Each disease starts with symptoms (for the hypochondriac to identify with of course!), diagnosis ("If you're so vain you have a pro...more

A must read. "Because it's ultraportable," notes the author, "you can (and probably should) have it with you at all times so at the slightest onset of an unmistakably fatal-feeling itchy rash, you can simply whip out your trusty guide, conveniently diagnose yourself, and then let the worrying begin."

It was insightful and and a bit tramatising to read all the different things people had in the past. It was funny too. A true guide for the Hypochondriac. I know alot of them.
If you are truly a hypochondriac this book is not for you. I have become convinced that I will die from one of these horrible and sometimes very rare diseases. The upside is that the author manages to insert much humor. Especially for those of us who need to take life or death situations with a side of humor. :)
When I was younger my sister and I made a list of the things we wanted to die from. Sounds a little morbid, I know, but it was funny at the time. The best part is that many of the items on the list are found in this book. This book is hilarious and quite informative on weird diseases.

Tried to be funny, but failed. The title is great, and it went down-hill from there.
This was a hilarious read... although some of those diseases sound a little like me. Ack! I have to throw out my fish tank stat!
Informative AND funny.
Snarky and hilarious!
Good thing I'm reading this, or I'd have never known I have Alien Hand Syndrome, and it completely clued me into the syndrome that causes men to grow breasts. ("Oh Kirk.....") Pretty damn funny and a perfect gift for all the obsessive sickly freaks in your life.
Making horrible diseases amusing is what this book is all about. It can be both disgusting and funny at the same time... and make you not want to do anything remotely dangerous again. Or possibly make you not want to eat your favorite foods ever again.
The title is by far the best part. The author could not more plainly be kind of a cocky, unpleasant jerk. I didn't get far and will go no further.
A small book of humor for anyone to enjoy. Fill your day with worries that your latest ache or pain means a fun-filled, lingering death!
What is there to say about a book this jaw-droppingly, antique lamp-smashingly, fine scotch-drinkingly good? I can't think of a thing.
"witty, disgusting, brilliant, at times shocking, and even offensive. how's that for hyperbolic? it's seriously good, yo."
Very entertaining, even if it is quite morbidly disgusting at times.
I'm pretty sure I have every parasite in this book. It's great.
funny unless you really do happen to be a hypochondriac.
I love stuff like this. =)
The tone of this book is awesome...it'll also make you never want to eat or leave you home again....great book!
