Mary Morgan, Dragon Pizzeria (Knopf, 2008)

Cute, but shallow, book about a couple of dragons who open a pizzeria in fairyland, delivering pizzas to all the usual suspects (the game of the book is for the kid you're reading it to to guess which particular fantasy character is getting the pizza). It's not a bad little conceit, and honestly I suspect I'd probably have been more impressed with it had I not read this directly after Jerry Pinkney's The Lion and the Mouse (probably the best More...

This is a wonderfully creative book, which combines a number of children's favorite things: pizza, dragons and fairytales. When two dragon friends, Bebop (who likes to cook) and Spike (who likes to go fast) open a pizzeria in fairyland, they receive call in orders from such celebrities as the Giant from "Jack and the Beanstalk", the Three Bears, and Hansel and Gretel. The kids loved making the phone ring noise and guessing who was ordering the pizza - like when the order was "th More...

In Dragon Pizzeria, BeBop Dragon cooks the pizzas, while Spike Dragon delivers them. They receive orders from witches, Jack in the beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty, and other fairy tale characters. It's fun to recognize the fairy tales and nursery rhymes in the orders. It can be great for a storytime, but it's mostly dialogue in speech bubbles, so that might make things a little difficult, but it can be fun to make all the different voices of the fairy tale characters, and I think that kids will ge More...

Both my boys (ages 4 and 8) loved this book and they don't even know the fairy tales that go along with it. They liked to say "brriing! brriing!" when the phone rang. They liked that it rhymed in some places.

Colorful, fun, and kids will love to use the clues to guess the identity of the fairy tale characters that call up for pizza. For ages 3-6.

I liked how you could guess who ordered the pizza based on clues.

Rhyme and repetition grace the pages of this story as two enterprising dragon friends decide to open a pizzeria in fairy tale land.
Customers include the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk, the three bears, Hansel & Gretel, Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty, and the witch from The Frog Prince. Each character orders a pizza topped with clues to their identity and you and your child get the opportunity to guess who they might be.
Cool. Cute. Engaging.

In Dragon Pizzeria by Mary Morgan, two exhuberant dragons run a pizza shop. BeBop cooks. Spike delivers. To where else but Fairy Tale Land! Bright pictures bring the rhyming and guessing game text to life. Read this one at your next storytime, practice your Fairy Tale Land Voices! And don't forget to check out the end papers.

The illustrations look WAY too much like the characters in the kids show "Dragontales". The rhymes and rhythms are inconsistent and awkward--the re-dos of Mother Goose rhymes are like the weak "piggy-back" rhymes overused by teachers and librarians.
In sum, a nice idea, but it just does work that well.

Cute picture book about two dragons who live in Fairy Land and they start their own pizza shop. One dragon makes the pizzas, and the other one delivers. Night after night they get calls, all from various nursery and fairy tale characters. The toppings go with each of the characters.

This is a cute book combining modern theme (pizza) and the old fairy tales and Mother Goose Rhymes. Kids familiar with the fairy tales and rhymes would enjoy this book. Illustrations are clear and colorful.
