Your friends on one side. This weird kid on the other. A great plan in the making. A new friendship growing.
What would *you* do?

How strange is Carlos? REALLY strange. He scratches himself all the time, and he talks about aliens in this weird shaky voice, and he breaks up the class and gets everyone else in trouble when it's *his* fault he's such a freak.
So Trina, Donte,...more

Great story for 6th and 7th grades -- a story of bullying, differences, and paying attention to your gut instincts. Trina goes to an inner city middle school, where the 7th grade gets to go on an overnight trip to the mountains of New Hampshire at the end of the year. Students who misbehave in school can't go -- so there's a lot of pressure to make things in class go right, or as "right" as they can. When she is paired up with Carlos for the big science project, Trina is terrified that Carlos wi...more

Despite some flaws, this is a very strong narrative. I was hooked, wanting to know how everything's gonna pan out at the end, wanting to know exactly what's wrong with Carlos, and wanting to know how Trina is dealing with all the ups and downs and the very ambiguous relationships with all her friends who are not necessarily NICE people, and neither is she herself.

That's the strength of the book: how there are many gray areas and in the end, nothing really gets resolved. I find this a gutsy move...more

Carlos Is Gonna Get is a story about a student that is labeled special Ed. and his entire class is aware of his situation. Fed up with is frequent outburst and class interruptions a small group of students decide that if Carlos is allowed to attend the end of the year class trip he will make it a bad experience for them all, so they decide to play a prank on him that will enable him from attending the trip. The narrator of the story is secretly sympathetic to Carlos's situation and wants to find...more

This book was very slow-moving at the beginning and I wondered if I would ever get through it. It was also not what I expected. I had thought it was about older students and expected a more intense mood. So I was somewhat put off, but I kept going - I had to as this is a book I am reading for my review group. It paid off in the end and I really enjoyed this story of 7th grade students who are irritated by Carlos - a weirdo who scratches constantly and claims to have been abducted by aliens. Thes...more

I was hooked for a few chapters by the realistic teenage voice of the narrator. The hook then became a cattle prod because the narrator, like, keeps writing like that and I was just so, like, sick of both the plot and the narrator; I almost relinquished the book to my own discard pile several times. Instead of an actual interest in how the conflict would be resolved, I was propelled through this boring book by a desire to find out if Carlos's "aliens" were actually scabies or lice. I would have...more

This book was very depressing. A few middle schoolers get fed up with a problem child in their class and decide to take matters into their own hands during a class trip. Unfortunately, the story lacked a lot of things at times. The heroine was too flaky for me and I get that middle school peer pressure is real and she felt the need to succumb, but I felt she would have caved instead of going through with it with her "best" friend. Also, never having a clear idea of what exactly was wrong with Ca...more

Carlos has some bad days at school, and the other kids in his middle school class just know that he's going to ruin their overnight field trip with some sort of drama. A group of them take the situation into their own hands and design an elaborate prank on Carlos during the trip. However, as one member of the group gets to know Carlos and his problems a bit better, she begins to wonder if they are doing the right thing. While it is never explicitly stated, the reader is led to believe that Carlo...more

So Trina, Donte, Thea, Sara, and Frankie decide to use the upcoming 7th-grade class trip to "get" Carlos and scare him into acting normal. But when Trina has to work with Carlos on a class project, she discovers both his sweetness and the full extent of his troubles. Wil...more

Carlos is gonna get it by Kevin Emerson is a good realistic fiction. It is about a class that plays a trick on their classmate carlos. Carlos is different from them. I like this book becuase the things that happen in this book could happen in real life. Also it was really good becuase Carlos spoke his side to Trina Carlos told her what was really going on inside his head it was good to get Carlos's side and how he felt. The main characters of Carlos is gonna get it is Carlos,Trina,Donte,Sara,Thea...more

Carlos is a special needs boy who has regular meltdowns in his 7th grade classes. Instead of his classmates being compassionate about his issues, they take it upon themselves to ostracize him and plan a very elaborate trick on an upcoming overnight class trip.

The writing in this book is not brilliant, but it is indicative of a junior high first person narrator so I forgive the simplicity of the writing on that account. This book was clearly written to teach kids a lesson about treating people wh...more

Well, Trina has that voice -- or guilt demon.

I was very excited to start this book, as many bloggers have referred to it. Admittedly, I was very disappointed to discover it was a middle grade book, as I expected it to be a high school urban fiction. However, unlike some other middle grade books, I didn't put it down because I was sucked into the story. Carlos is a fascinating character and the plot is very exciting. Many of the events are quite predictable, but I think middle schoolers will definitely fall in love with this book.

I did not like the all out bullying in this book - it left me with a bad feeling. I think that some students could really relate to this and for others, it may be too real for them.

As a teacher we try to protect the weakest of our students and many times we are unable to do that. I didn't like that feeling either.

The book itself was very simply written and for low level readers.

At times the characters felt very real to me, but at others I felt an adult author moralizing through Trina. I had trouble relating to either. Still, a decent depiction of trying to negotiate the complex social and emotional middle school landscape. These are seventh graders going on eighth, but I think I'd suggest it for readers a couple of years younger than that.

Not much to say about this book really. It was a cute story, didn't really have a main point. Maybe just a moral to the story, but not really like an interesting plot. Carlos is pretty annoying and it never really says what is wrong with him. I don't like the guessing game it makes you play. I just wanted to know what was wrong and why he blamed aliens. It doesn't give you any answers. But it was alright, I wouldn't read it again.

NO for our library.

Wow! What a great story of kids picking on the classmate that's weird, different, and misunderstood. Unfortunately, on account of the language and some maturity issues, it's clear that this story is more appropriate for middle school students and not for an elementary school library.

Still, definitely worth reading. Very good stuff!

3.5 stars. I could tell it was written by a former teacher. The middle school kids were very realistic, but I don't actually think real ones have any interest in their teachers at all...clearly the writer thought otherwise. So that bothered me. Otherwise, it's a well-written story about cruelty, peer pressure and being different.

The story and characters will be instantly recognizable to upper-elementary and middle-school students: Trina and her friends are annoyed by Carlos, who gets a lot of extra attention, treats, and never gets in trouble because he has a "special plan." The ringleader in Trina's circle plans a trick to "get" Carlos during their class camping trip. As Trina gets to know Carlos better through working on a partner project, she starts to feel guilty about her part in the plot, but is unwilling/unable t...more

A very timely story of some kids who pull a prank on an annoying kid at school because "he deserves it." Fortunately, the narrator sees the error in her ways, but it interesting to read their thoughts throughout the planning, the prank, and the aftermath.

I'd give this to a middle schooler. It was an unexpectedly good read. The characters have shades of gray. They're realistic. The bullies aren't invincible, they're vulnerable. The ending is not shiny and after-school-special-y. Lessons are learned, but it isn't preachy. Bravo, man.

It was OK. It was not the best book ever but it wasn't crap. I might recomend it to someone that likes really werid kids like carlos is. It was also a pritty easy read. The words in it were big so that made it a little easyer.

This book is very sad about cruel kids who bully a boy who has seizures. It held my attention but was a real tear-jerker for sure. It amazes me that humans can be so horrible to one another.
Treasure
I'm sure if I were a kid, I would have found the ending more surprising and meaningful, but as an adult, I knew it was coming pretty early on. A well written book on the topic of bullying and peer pressure.

Potential Battle of the Books title? I don't think so. While it's a perfectly serviceable bullying book, I'd really like to read an intermediate-upper grade novel of originality and depth. Any suggestions?
Debbie Mcneil
Great perspective, strong realistic voice. Perhaps better lesson about bullying than a preachy novel.

The only reason I let this book go is because it was WAY too easy...
