I GUESSED THE KILLER!!

So, this is obviously my absolutely favorite Hercule Poirot novel, since I was such a genius that I solved the crime before the chapters got into double digits. I couldn't guess the motive, but I knew who did it, how said person did it, and other specifics of the crime fairly early on! Christie had me second-guessing myself about half way through, but I stuck with my own detecting skills and was richly rewarded at the end. figuratively of course.

Hercule Poirot has been invited to many parties, but this one was different. The local vicar dropped dead after drinking a cocktail. At first, the death is presumed to be from natural causes. But a few weeks later, a doctor who was a guest at the fatal party also drops dead after finishing a drink.

Poirot is not a central character in this book until towards the end. The main character at first is Mr. Satterthwaite, a conventional gentleman of uncertain age. That makes it a little dif...more

bookshelves: detective-mystery
The idea of a man killing in order to satisfy his dramatic tendencies is not a new idea, but it would be fine, except it wasn't done particularly well here either. However, it's still a good read, and her books never stop being an interesting read, particularly when Poirot cracks the case. It's a shame that he's not in more of this novel, however; the fact that it passes through other characters before Poirot really appears around halfway made it feel even more flat and detached than it already ...more

Why I Chose To Read This Book: I'd earlier purchased a Poirot-at-Christmas novel, and the notes in the ebook warned that it spoiled this earlier book.

A little slow to develop and harder than usual to get into. I managed to figure out the "who" in this whodunnit but was in the dark on the motive.

I had this one figured out about forty pages after I started. It's good, though, just predictable.

One of these days I really must remember to suspect everybody, not just the obvious suspects. Did I learn nothing from "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd"?

Not one of Christie's best. It wasn't as intense as many of her others have been. Still, it was good.

Hercule Poirot, the hero of many, many of Dame Christie's books, is nowhere to be seen for two-thirds of this book. The mystery is investigated by two characters we don't really know. The mystery itself is not terribly interesting, and by the time we find out whodunnit, it's not much of a surprise.

Poirot's absence brings this book down. Having read "Cat Among the Pigeons", which I liked a lot, I like Poirot and only felt like the story only got interesting when he came...more

This is one of my favorite Christie's. I know... some of her books are just silly, I mean most of her cases are too plain or otherwise probably exaggerated, but this one is quite tricky. Love the plot, love the characters, and reading Christie's always give me a conventional-oldschool-ish feeling, it's fun.

This was the very first Agatha Christie / Hercule Poirot novel I read.

Our school library had an old hard back copy of this with a burgandy cover and art deco lettering with the alternate tile "Murder in Three Acts". I was about twelve or thirteen when I read it. Was thoroughly hooked...
