I read this for a Holocaust Literature course I'm taking this year, and its short stories were beautifully tragic, its characters presenting deep psychological dilemmas and emotional turmoil. The description of setting throughout the stories is done skillfully and in a way that mirrors themes throughout. I really appreciated this collection, as Spiegel was able to consistently prompt empathy for those involved through his storytelling.
