wasn't sure whether i wanted to read the second book of the series, so i waited until the book was on sale before i bought it.. :p
this book is definitely better than the first one. the loose strands are starting to knot, pieces of puzzle are falling into place.
as the chapter goes on, the feeling of sympathy goes deeper for one of the antagonist character, christopher carrion. i've always had a soft side for forlorn lovers whose love goes unrequited. :p he's a cruel, dreadful person, but you ...more

Anyone who enjoys a good fantasy from time to time
This book was better than the first one in that the first book is a setup to this book. This is a perfect case of "you can't have one without the other" as the first book has no resolution at all and seems to create a need to read the next installment.
I adore these books.
In the second book, we are on the brink of war between Night and Day. Carrion is still after Candy, and we are continuing with her on a voyage around the land of Abarat, her desire to return home, and feeling...more

Lets just begin by saying, I LOVE THIS MAN (the author/illustrator)
i read this book right before i came back to school so i hope it counts, but regardless, it was AMAZING
this is the, i guess, second edition to the series of books. like the first it was filled with adventure and mythical(sp) creatures that definately kept me laughing and terrified at the same time.
open this book, its pretty self explanatory(sp), you know you will have a good time. im not much of a fantasy girl, but for ...more

I love Clive Barker's magical world of Abarat not just for all of the imaginative, colorful creatures that inhabit the islands, but for sentiments like this: "It was a cornerstone of geshratian belief that sleep did not separate friends and loved ones, but instead brought their slumbering souls closer to one another. Hence the familiar geshrat wishes as they parted for bed; not 'good night' or 'sweet dreams,' but 'See you sleeping.'"

A strong sequel to the enchanting Abarat. This volume in the series is a little less picaresque than the first book, as events in the Abarat are starting to come to a head. One of the strongest things about this series is Barker's apparently limitless sense for the bizarre and unique -- the basic plot of the series thus far has a lot of fairly typical fantasy elements, but Barker still manages to surprise, as he turns things on their head over and over again. The illustrations are lovely, as wel...more

This book took everything I found admirable about the first Abarat book and took it to the next level. The fantastical elements of Abarat are shown to be even more beautiful and hideous than previously shown, the nightmares are darker and more immediate, and more is revealed about Candy's past.

omg there's four parts? When are the next two coming out? I want to read 'em. And look at the pretty pretty pictures. The pictures are awesome.
EDIT:
I need to own this book, already. The copy from the library is currently lurking around my room because I don't want to return it. Page 108-109 has a particularly pretty picture.

This is a complex and lovely fairy tale for the modern set. As in any other Clive Barker work, the characters are amazing and developed, the scenery is magical, and it provokes wishful thinking of being able to actually travel to Abarat. I am very impatiently awaiting the third installment.

I love Clive Barker's "Abarat" series. A young girl named Candy Quackenbush (a name you have to love) from Chickentown, Minnesota is the heroine and the books detail her adventures in another world. The book is a fun read and has extraordinary art work done by Mr. Barker himself.

I read these books while waiting for the next installment in the Harry Potter series. Not nearly as satisfying. Entirely dreamlike -- bizarre and imaginative, but seemingly random and possibly meaningless. I will keep reading, to see if Barker ends up tying it all together.

I spent half the summer going to different libraries trying to find this book because where ever I went, it was checked out. If you've read Abarat, you won't be dissappointed in the sequel. And even if you haven't read Abarat, you still won't be dissappointed.

Anyone who read the first Abarat.
If you enjoyed the first Abarat as much as I did, you couldn't wait to get your greedy little claws into the second installment...and, after you were done slowly exhaling following the last page, you are, like me, eagerly awaiting the third...

Again... just WHAT is so spectacular about the Abarat series, I really can't articulate. I can only strongly suggest that you read them for yourself. Make sure you read the full-color, illustrated editions!

Not quite the obsession-creating book that the first one was, but still very satisfying. Candy's adventures in the Abarat are....I just need to read more. I can't wait for the third book to come out!

I read this sequel first because it was free... Great illustrations by the author! The story is really imaginative. I was surprised it is aimed at younger readers, though. It was really scary!

This is the second book of the series and really this is where the story is. It is better than the first, and of course the illustrations are fantastic. Read them both back to back.

It's been too long since I read the first one, so I am having trouble remembering what happened and whats going on. So far though the paintings throughout are pretty cool . .
