You have to start with The Great and Secret Show but as soon as you start Everville you are surrounded by old friends and enemies. One of my favorite books of all time!

So far so good...not as horror driven as other Clive Barker reads. It's more "sci-fi" ish.

Everville is less of a sequel to Barker's The Great And Secret Show than it is another story set in the same split-down-the-middle universe. The characters that survived the first book all make appearances, albeit in a confusingly randomized hierarchy. Tesla, the unlikely heroine is now the protagonist, while her partner Grillo and star-crossed lovers Howie and Jo-Beth are relegated to near walk-ons. not as good as the great and secret show though ... Buddenbaum was just not villainy and so was Kissoon.though the last part made it all worth it . didn't care much for phoebe though.. she was annoying .. Tesla again rocked the book ... i can't help but feel sad for the characters that died when i was so close to them in the first book. again .. a great Clive barker book that could have been better might a sequel have been published immediately

Excellent follow up to "The Great and Secret Show." Where the other was more guts and gore, this novel was complete fantasy, reminded me a bit of "Weaveworld" and the movie "What Dreams May Come." I love Clive Barker's imagination and characters. I did notice that his hetero-relationships were romanticized, while the few gay characters seem to have more gritty lifestyles and love lives. I don't know if this distinction was made consciously, but it did bother me ...more

Clive Barker has some amazing, if not occasionally disturbing, ideas. It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it. The characters were complex, and full of human failings and strengths and the story and philosophies were fantastic. One of those books that sends your mind on strange journeys after you've finished reading it.
