Lady Erica of Gronwood had no idea the mess that just entered her well-ordered world when she is called down to confront a prisoner being held in her brother’s dungeon. Angered by the prisoners arrogance and seeming lies she orders him whipped for his insolence- an order she quickly decides to rescind after leaving his presence. However circumstance keeps her from doing so and the beating happens- at the hands of a cruel man- unbeknownst to her.

When Selig’s sister Kristen (Hearts Aflame) does find him, she’s horrified to see his condition. Taking Erica as captive she forces her from her home until Selig is well enough to deal with Lady Erica himself.

Although I liked this book well enough it still wasn’t near as good as Heart’s Aflame and it was amazing how Kristen and Royce took over the scene every time they were on the page. Where as I didn’t mind “the big misunderstanding” in the first two books in this series- here it just became wearying. Out of his mind with fever, Selig thought it was Erica who had whipped him and had laughed while doing so. Her guilty conscious makes her agree to the fact she was responsible since she had been the one to order it, but it really wasn’t. (The brutal guard of her brother’s was the guilty party). Much of the book was him prejudiced against her and she too prideful to reveal the truth all the while fighting their attraction for each other.

Although not bad, I just had hoped for something a little more involved for Selig, (a more 3 dimensional heroine perhaps? ugh), since I too had been in love with him since the time of his birth in Fires of Winter - just like every other woman apparently! :P Certainly more than the same mistrust and misunderstanding we had gotten from the first two books in the series. CENTRAL CHARACTERS: SELIG HAARDRAD is first born to Garrick and Brenna Haardrag. His features are more like his Celtic mother as opposed to his Norwegian father. He spends his time traveling between Norway and his newly built residence near his brother-in-law and sister’s Wessex manor. ERIKA HARALDSSON, a Dane, lives with and manages her brother’s manor in East Anglia. Her personality is civil as compared to being authoritative and she is exceptionally beautiful.

SYNOPSIS: Selig voluntarily travels to the Danish King on a mission for Saxon King Alfred. His group is attacked on the way and Selig is left for dead. Having been revived, he seeks shelter at the Haraldsson manor where he is tortured and accused of being a spy rather than being welcomed. Selig’s sister rescues him and takes him severely wounded back to Wessex along with Erika Haraldsson by way of a knife at her throat.

WHAT I LIKED: Erika’s shadow is a great person to know IF you want your neck broken. Kristen is a handful (just like her mother). Sexual descriptions toned down as compared to previous (2) books in this series.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Did not like the way that the circumstances surrounding Selig’s initial rescue were written.

I give this book (4) stars. This series continues to be on my fav list. This author is on my fav list. I appreciate that the author chose to lessen the powerful sexual narratives in this book as compared to the previous (2) books.

Yang baca buku 1 - 2 pasti sudah sedikit tau lah ya siapa itu Selig Haardrad si Viking hehe.. tipe2 laki2 yang selalu dicintai oleh setiap wanita, karena ganteng, baik hati sikapnya selalu ceria dan hobinya becanda, sampe dia dapat gelar Selig The Blessed.

Honestly Selig is having it a little too easy here in Wessex of the Middle Ages. He is incredibly tall/ dark/ handsome/ successful/ great warrior / insert more ... but despite all that he is humble and all that (right). Okay, scratch that - he is not humble at all and as he fall into an unfortunate situation and needs to reason with the lady of the castle which he comes upon .. he bungles it terribly and she punishes him instead of helping. Found a copy of this for sale at the library and had to have it. I cut my romance reading teeth on Johanna Lindsey. My first was Savage Thunder and I think I read that book in the dark a thousand times.
Lindsey's Viking series set the bar; I compare all other novels of the same subject to hers. These were books where you could really judge by the cover. Those covers made Fabio famous and women everywhere very, very happy.

I did not like Selig, evidently I am one woman who does not swoon under his 'charm.' Are we forgetting that he kidnapped this girl, forced her to marry him and chained her to a spot in his bedroom for his sick pleasure? All this happened just because of a misunderstanding.

It's really sick how far some guy will go for revenge, even though most of what happened shouldn't have happened or was primarily through a hallucination. If Selig was fat, balding and had a wart the size of my foot on his nose...more

Seri ini semakin ke belakang semakin sedikit aku kasih bintang,
Sebuah cerita dengan plot yang bagus, sayangnya karakter tokohnya tidak terasa sama sekali. Selig yang diceritakan penggoda ataupun Erika yang mandiri. I was expecting more from the book based on the synopsis, because it did have potential.
There were whole chapters about characters other than the mains, which really could've been better used to tell more about the main's.
For exampel, why did I have to read backgound about the new slave who wants to control Selig and the house, like she did to her previous masters. All it took were a few lines, and off she's sold to his friend. Really a waste of page in my opinion, since we would've got the same...more

Tidak seperti buku pertama yang mengharu biru dan membuatku emosi.

Selig Haardrad, super tampan berwajah malaikat, anak seorang Lord Viking, playboy, dan memiliki nasib baik sejak dia dilahirkan ibunya. Sepertinya Selig ini adalah orang yang memiliki banyak cadangan nyawa deh. Terlahir tanpa bernafas dan memperoleh kehidupan karena bantuan pernafasan dari sang ayah. Pernah disangka mati oleh adik perempuannya dalam usahanya menjarah sebuah biara di tanah para bangsa Saxon. Dalam keterlibatannya dengan bangsa Saxon Selig ikut berperang dengan berpihak pada bangsa Saxon dan terluka parah untungnya ditolong oleh pihak musuh (dikira mereka berdua berada dipihak yang sama. Keberuntungannyapun berlanjut dibuku ketiga ini.

Menggantikan seorang penterjemah yang mati karena sakit, Selig berangkat menuju East Anglia bersama rombongan utusan raja Saxon untuk menyampaikan penawaran pernikahan politik antar kedua negara kepada raja Norwegia. Ditengah perjalanan rombongan ini diserang dan dihabisi oleh perampok jalanan. Selig bernasib baik, dia selamat dari penyerangan, tetapi mengalami luka dikepala yang cukup serius. Dalam keadaan tidak sadarkan diri, Selig ditolong, dirawat, dan dibawa ke East Anglia oleh 2 orang perampok kubur (ini menjadi salah satu misteri yang tidak terpecahkan oleh Selig). Putus harapan akan keadaan Selig yang tidak pernah bangun dari tidurnya, penolongnya ini meninggalkan Selig ditengah perjalanan mereka diwilayah East Anglia.

Terbangun dari tidurnya, Selig yang mengalami "gegar otak" tidak menyadari keberadaannya dan berapa lama dia tidak sadarkan diri. Sesampainya di kastil Gronwood, Selig dianggap sebagai mata mata pihak musuh karena warna rambut dan bahasa yang dia pakai untuk berbicara.

Sebagai wakil kakaknya yang sedang tidak ada di kastil, Erika of Gronwood (Erika ini diceritakan mempunyai bayangan yang selalu melindunginya dari kecil bernama Turgeis) menangani kasus Selig ini. Ditengah interogasi yang dilakukan Erika, Selig sudah menyampaikan kebenaran yang tidak dipercayai oleh Erika, bahwa Selig adalah utusan dan terluka. Tidak disangka dan tanpa sadar, Selig yang sedang mengalami sakit yang amat sangat ini meminta perawatan dari Erika diatas ranjangnya (nah loh... Ini cowok bener bener penuh percaya diri sampe cewe yang baru ditemui ditawarin seperti itu). Hal ini menyebabkan kemarahan Erika sehingga memerintahkan hukuman cambuk atas kelancangan Selig.

Sebenarnya Erika sempat membatalkan hukuman cambuk itu, akan tetapi karena insiden kecelakaan yang dialami oleh keponakannya membuat Erika tidak dapat menyampaikan sendiri perintahnya dan mengutus bayangannya untuk membatalkan hukuman walaupun sudah terlambat (Selig sudah dicambuk beberapa kali). Selain diselamatkan dari hukuman cambuk, luka luka Seligpun dirawat. Atas perintah Erika jugalah Turgeis mengirim utusan kepada keluarga Selig untuk menjemputnya. Namun karena luka dikepalanya mengakibatkan Selig mengalami demam dan halusinasi yang menimbulkan kesalahpahamannya terhadap Erika (Selig mengira tawa sang penyembuh yang mengejeknya adalah tawa Erika yang puas akan penderitaan yang dialaminya).

Utusanpun datang kerumah Kristen yang sedang heboh karena berita penyerangan yang dialami oleh rombongan kakaknya. Karena Royce, saudara ipar Selig tidak berada di kastil pada saat utusan tiba (Royce berada di tempat rombongan Selig diserang) maka berangatlah Kristen dengan pasukan suami serta teman teman viking Selig. Tidak hanya menjemput Selig, Kristenpun menyandera Erika atas permintaan Selig dengan alasan bahwa Erikalah yang menyebabkan penderitaan yang dialami oleh Selig. Dengan mudah dan tanpa perlawanan yang berati dari pasukan Gronwood dan bayangannya, Erika ditawan oleh Kristen. Dalam perjalanan ke kastil Wyndhurst, Erika yang cantik ini menunjukkan betapa tinggi harga dirinya dengan tidak mengeluh ataupun menunjukkan penderitaan yang dialaminya.

Setibanya di kastil Wyndhurst, maka dimulilah masa perbudakan Erika, dimana Erika dirantai dan ditempatkan dikamar Selig untuk selalu dipermalukan oleh Selig dengan berbagai cara. Tapi Selig tidak pernah melakukan kekerasan terhadap Erika (sudah sifat Selig yang tidak pernah dan tidak akan melakukan kekerasan terhadap seorang wanita). Sebenarnya Kristen dan ibunya Brenna tidak setuju dengan tindakan Selig yang memakaikan belenggu kepada Erica mengingat apa yang pernah terjadi kepada mereka berdua (ibu dan anak ini pernah diperbudak oleh suami mereka masingmasing sebelum mereka menikah). Kristen dan Brenna sempat mengingatkan Selig akan kebiasaan keluarga mereka yang dijawab Selig, dia bukanlah ayahnya ataupun saudara iparnya sehingga akan menikahi musuhnya.

Sampai akhirnya keduanya terjebak dalam pernikahan yang diatur untuk kepentingan politik dihadapan raja Saxon, (karena kakak Erika datang menjemput Erika dengan membawa pasukannya dan mengepung kastil Wyndhurst dengan raja Alfred didalamnya). Untuk menghindari kejadian yang tidak diinginkan, Selig dengan "berat hati?" setuju menikahi Erika. Selain itu juga Selig mengancam Erika agar bersedia menikah dengannya dan tidak akan menceritakan keadaan yang sebenarnya kepada kakak Erika. Oh ya ternyata kakak Erika ini adalah orang yang pernah menyelamatkan Selig jadi tidak mungkin Selig membunuh penyelamatnya. Mau maunya si Erika ini ditipu oleh Selig. Selig juga sedikit demi sedikit mulai jatuh hati pada Erika karena baru kali ini ada wanita yang tidak langsung jatuh hati dan bertekuk lutut dihadapnya.

Mendekati akhir cerita terbongkarlah kedok orang yang telah membunuh rombongan utusan raja (Selig memimpikan penyerangan yang dialaminya). Sehingga Seligpun menantang Lord Durwyn atas izin raja.

Untuk menghindari kemarahan raja dan tantangan Selig, Lord Durwyn menculik dan menyandera Erica. Berkat kerjasama Selig dan Turgeis, dibantu Royce dan Kristen, akhirnya selig dapat menemukan Erika dan saat itu Selig mengucapkan: "Aku sangat mencintaimu, aku tak pernah setakut ini seumur hidup, dan jika sampai kau pergi sendirian seperti yang kau lakukan ini, aku bersumpah akan merantaimu kembali". Cukup romantis menurutku. Jadi kutambah satu bintang buat Selig ;-)(less)

Buku terakhir dari trilogi Viking Haardard ini entah mengapa tak mendapat tempat dihati saya. Sosok Selig yang digambarkan begitu tampan seperti wajah malaikat rasanya kurang tepat. Bagaimana mungkin, Viking yang notabene kasar bisa memiliki wajah halus bak malaikat. Jika pun memang ditakdirkan berwajah halus, bukankah wajah tersebut lama-lama menjadi kasar akibat tahun-tahun penuh penaklukan yang keras dan sulit???

Ketidaktepatan lainnya adalah sosok Selig yang digambarkan tak pernah sedikitpun...more

Well...ok..gak terlalu terkesan di banding 2 buku lainnya...

Buat jaman tahun 800an, rasanya ajaib aja ada lelaki berwajah malaikat...yang ssaking cakep nya sampe semua perempuan gak sanggup menolak..
Untunglah ada Erika , satu nya yg menolak Selig...hahahhaah..kena batu nya dia

Adegan fight nya ga terlalu seru juga, malah menyebal kan banget sama budak yg sok cantik gak tau diri membuat pengen nabok

Tapi itu justru yang bikin aku salut sama tante JL, bisa bikin gregetan dan ikutan cemburu..huff...more

THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ SCINCE "THE PRESENT BY JOHANNA LINDSEY!!" I loved it. I couldn't put it down! it was incrediable! The love and Romance, the way it was writtin. Just loved this book. This is the last book of 3. The other 2 books are called "Fires of Winter" and "Hearts Aflame" First book is "Fires of Winter" Second book is "Hearts Aflame" And Surrender My love is the third! Oh I love me some women-unfriendly Viking, seeking revenge for the harm and pain he suffered. I knew reading one of Johanna Lindsey's book wouldn't disappoint and it didn't. And I know I'm normally a fan of strong women, who know what they want and how to get it, and this book tells a story about a time in which they had never heard of feminism, postfeminism or anything else ending on feminism. But it was captivating and addictive: loved every word of it!

this story is amazing, so funny yet so heart wrenching.. but it's too quickly ended.. there's much more lindsey can do to finish this story..

anyway the character i love the most surprisingly is not the hero or the heroine,.. it is turgeis ten feet.. erika's shadow... he is the most loyal, caring, n loving friends i have known.. it's wonderful to know that in the end, turgeis found his own happiness.. i really happy for him..

inti ceritanya tentang 2 orang yang saling salah paham dan bermusuhan lalu lambat laun saling mencintai..
Kris dan royce tetep pasangan paling favorit dicerita viking ini, banyak adegan mereka yg lumayan bikin ketawa:D
fokus cerita ga bener2 ke dua selig dan erika selaku tokoh utama, tapi tetep menarik dan rame (mungkin karena gw suka semua tokoh2 di cerita ini:))

Finally a change for Johanna Lindsey **phew**. Fires of winter had so many rape scenes and Hearts Afalme had so many bodice ripping scenes that I was finally feeling sick of Lindsey girl's writings though I have heard so much about her but this book is a good one actually. But now,i dun think so..Thats why i reduced the star..

Alasannya..Well,ni novel seharusnya milik seliq n erika..I mean if i hv to fall in or out of love,mreka dua tuh objeknya...But,napa aku kok dpt feelnya justru ke kristen n royce!!And make me smile nya justru ke mereka..
This book makes me want to re-read 'Heart of flame'..

Suka sama semua buku dalam trilogi Viking ini, walo terkesan barbar krn demen banget memperbudak dan menculik sang Heroine ;p, tapi tidak mengurangi kenikmatan dalam membaca jalan ceritanya. Kedua tokoh utama selalu sama" kuat dan dominan, jadi tidak berat sebelah emosi yg didapet waktu membaca buku" ini. Tante JL mang paling jago bikin cerita model bgini, like her novel so much ;D.

A good story, all in all. As others have stated. The ending was too abrupt.

I do hate it when an author creates all this angst and then you have 2 pages of happy ending. I tolerated it in the other two knowing I would see the characters again. As this is the last of the sequal...Oh Well. Still a good read.

Really good book by Johanna Lindsey.I prefured 'Hearts Aflame' to this one but i love how Selig coulnt hurt Erika, no matter how hard he tired.Even though he always threatend to-had some really funny bits were I out right giggled.
I loved the cameo, at the start, of Kristen and Royce. We see how they are getting on and how their lives and children have grow(children who adore their uncle Selig)

Selig Haardrad is a gorgeous viking that while on a mission he is attacked. Ill and looking for help he is held prisoner and whipped in Lady Erika's dungeon.
