"Soul Eater" is the third book in "Chronicles of Ancient Darkness", but there will be six books in all.
The story continues to follow Renn and Torak in their pursuit of the Soul Eaters, who have captured wolf; Torak's canine companion and ‘pack brother’. Wolf is to be used in a series of sacrifices to protect the Soul Eaters from the demons they are to unleash into the world.

I think I liked this book the least. Maybe the novelty has worn off a bit, and the direction the story was going was towards more evil stuff. Maybe it was all the mage craft stuff that just had to be delved through, but I didn't enjoy it... just yucky muck, rotting, stinking, gross stuff. I'm curious to see how my kids take it.
Ian McKellan did an excellent job of the different voices of the soul eaters. He's just so amazing. What more can I say? He's Ian McKellan. That says it all.

This is definitely the most emotional book in the series so far. Everything in Torak's world changes, and he becomes more alert. He's had to grow up quickly, but now he's being thrust into situations that a fully grown adult couldn't handle.
Torak, in my opinion, is more relatable. He's definitely changed, and he seems more human for it. Everything around him is changing, and he has to change in order to keep up with it.

By far the most emotional book in the series so far Soul Eater tore at my heart. Its constant twists and turns leave you forever lost until Paver graces us with an explanation. The many surprise thrown at you in the book keep you on your toes and teach you how to expect the unexpected. The way bonds are tested and fates unfold keep you in a constant struggle between how bad you want answers and how fast you can read. This mystery is an exciting addition to the series where even the title's names...more
Torak's adventures continue with his quest to find and destroy the Soul Eaters and, with each successive book in the series, these adventures are getting darker and more dangerous. Torak's bond with Wolf and Renn is also growing and we see the boy maturing. Ms. Paver has obviously done a lot of research on prehistoric times and cultures, as well as the lands in which she sets Torak's story. It makes for an incredibly delightful, enjoyable read. I will continue to faithfully follow Torak's qu...more
The third installment in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. Torak and Renn are in the Far North searching for Wolf who has been taken by the Soul Eaters. What do they want with him? Can Renn and Torak rescue him in time and save their world from the machinations of the evil Soul Eaters? This series is thoroughly enjoyable. Every installment is better than the last. Can't wait for the next volume!
In this third volume of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, Wolf is captured and Torak and Renn must follow his captors into the north to rescue Wolf. On the journey they discovers that Wolf's captors are the Soul Eaters who lilled Torak's father and they are capturing hunters in order to unleash the demons at the door between the worlds so they can control the demons thereby ruling the world.
I`ve read this book and was a bit surprised by the author.
She started the story with vague start where the journey kicked-off with capture of Wolf by other soul eaters.
TO be honest, at the beginning of this, I didn`t feel the engagement as a reader.
It was as if I was tied to read the book by a thin thread.
But as i was reading it, and starting to grasp the plot. The misunderstanding between Torak and Renn were all being told here.

There are quite a few students at my school who LOVE this series. I like it a lot, although I never get that "must read the next book RIGHT NOW" feeling. I definitely plan to read them all, but I enjoy spreading them out and visiting this world in-between a lot of other worlds.

Whilst out hunting with Renn, somebody snatches Wolf, and takes him to the Far North. Torak cannot abandon his pack brother, so they follow through unknown territory, but can they make it in time to save Wolf?
Again, another fantastic addition to the series. I'm really enjoying these books, you can tell the amount of research the author has done because it's so realistically detailed for that time. The stories have started to get darker in tone as Torak and Renn get closer to fighting...more

Wasn't really looking forward to reading this ... there's something clinical in the way Paver writes that really takes you to be in the right mood. However, once I got started the pace of the story pulled me in, and it moved along nicely. A few revelations that will carry into the next book means I'll certainly have a go at it - maybe I'll take a break for a while first, though!
This is probably one of the best book in the series. The plot is really terrfying the villains are the main characters, Michelle Paver brings us closer to the Soul Eater and how terrible their schemes are and their future evil plans. it was full of darkness and ice a perfect winter read.
this one was my favorite!!!!!! this is where u learn who and what the soul eaters really are and what they want, and torak is right in the middle of it trying to rescue wolf! and renn is trying to help, but thats hard considering if they find her, they kill her
I've been giving glowing reviews to the "Ranger's Apprentice" series by John Flanagan here, but this series by Paver is just as good. Placed in prehistory, it also provokes thought as to how far we may really have "advanced," and gives great insight and perspective on the natural world that our ancestors occupied and that we still find around us, if we care to notice (and protect). Paver's notes on her research at the end of each book are fascinating. Beyond those benefits...more
Torak and Renn must pursue Wolf into the Far North because he has been kidnapped by the Soul Eaters, who seek to release demons into the world. It will take all of their luck and skill to rescue Wolf and prevent the release of the demons.
wolf is captured, and taken away, by people who are capturing other hunters and clan protectors, as they move north, Torak and Renn have decided against advice leave to attempt to save wolf, and protection from soul eaters who have taken the animals to bring demons into the world.
A little more darker than the others but still enjoyable. I like the fact that you learn a little bit more about the characters with each book, without the author repeating the existing facts in every new book.
A great book. I'm so glad I took the leap of reading the first. This genre is so unique, so incredible. I was utterly captivated. Thank you Michelle paver! For all the entertainment
Sometimes things are so amazing and lovely that they make me want to cry.
When I think of these books all I want to do is burst and crying, they are just so god damn incredible.

Wasn't too keen on this one. It had a twist in it, but the lead up felt overlong, and there wasn't enough story for my liking. Still, I'm reading the rest of the series!
A Great 3rd book to the series. It’s winter, and wow is it harsh. Once again, Michelle delivered a great story, full of lore and great characters. Read it!
The kids and I just finished reading this book and are dying to read Outcast. Loved all the descriptions of the way the "northern" people live.
Its a great book and I was amazed by how the author writes and the word choice! It really is a wonderful book that makes you wait for more!
I really liked this book. Unlike the other books that I have read in this series, the plot did not take many twists and turns. The plot just had one main topic. I started reading this book during the NECAPS testing period. On a scale of 1 to 5, I gave this book a 4.

Another excellent entry in this series that "combines Stone Age anthropology with supernatural mythology"--Torak and his friend Renn set off to the frozen North to rescue his "packmate" (best friend who's not a human) Wolf. There's always lots of outdoor survival scenes and tense action in these books, plus animal behavior--the way Torak and Wolf "talk" in wolfspeak is really neat. The magical elements are also fascinating, as Torak once again must "spirit walk...more
