I'm awful proud of humanity for coming up with the idea of the monster. And what a wonderfully convenient metaphor it is too! The monster as a symbolic hodgepodge of all our fears and worries. The worst of our nightmares turned on their heads. Sesame Street tamed them. Monsters, Inc. reformed them. And children's literature has dealt with them in a variety of different ways. A little boy learns that it is much more fun to play with the monster from the closet than to be afraid of it.

First of all, I like this book, far, far better than anything the author's illustrious grandfather ever wrote :D
But I HATE the artwork, which reminds me of "Jimmy Neutron", "Howdy Doody" and some other retro show that I can't name at the moment.
Still, it's another nice story to encourage kids not to be afraid of the monster in the closet, or under the bed....

This is adorable, but not for the child who will truly be taumatized by the thought of a monster in the closet. Older preschoolers, for the most part, will be okay. The monster in the closet is really nothing to be scared of, the author explains why in the back of the book. Very clever, and the illustrations are wonderful.
