I devoured The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own in just a few short hours. I soaked up all of [the ever-so-fabulous:] Nina Garcia's words regarding her take on 100 classic pieces, delighted in the fact that I own many of the items, envied those I didn't, and appreciated Ruben Toledo's whimsical illustrations. Forget industry magazines' lists of style must-haves and shell out a few extra dollars (or Euros, yen, etc.) for Garcia's Greatest Hits.

Very silly (in my opinion) but fun to page through and think about items that could be good gifts for me or someone else. Would NOT recommend buying it -- unless you're actually serious about following through with her suggestions; a library rental is perfect since it takes about an hour to peruse, which is about as deep as I needed to go with it.

I actually enjoyed this book a great deal. I expected to be light, frivolous, and highly subjective and it is all those things; yet I was still pleasantly surprised. Of course I am biased a bit because I tend to be like classic things and I admire Nina Garcia's style. In that sense I am probably closer to her target audience. Any book about style is pointless if one does not admire the style sense of the author. I don't agree with all her choices, but I didn't expect to. Even as I read her...more

A fashionista of Project Runway fame declares the 100 things needed to be stylish. Here's the list of the ones I have:

* camel coat (only it hasn't fit in years)
* cosmetics bag
* denim jacket
* fur (faux, around the hood of my not-exactly-fashionable parka)
* iPod (just a Shuffle, though)
* jeans
* knee boots (a recent acquisition--I admit they make me feel more stylin' than normal)
* luggage
* one-piece swim...more

I admit it, I have no sense when it comes to fashion. I can't tell you who makes the "it" pair of jeans this year or who makes the best shoes. I do try to look put together when I leave the house but it is time that I take a lesson from Nina Garcia, authoress to The One Hundred, A guide to the pieces every stylish woman must own.

Okay, I admit that I am not a Fashionista. I live in a rural area and wear a uniform to work, so the chic part of my wardrobe is slim. But I would love to improve in that area (I keep watching What Not to Wear, hoping something will sink in) and this book is a great guide.

There are quite a few items on this list of 100 that I actually own, surprisingly. Little Black Dress, Wayfarer sunglasses (so glad to learn that those are classic, I've been wearing them since college), Ballet Flat...more

This is a fun little book to flip through. There are tidbits about how certain fashion items like ballet flats came to market and suggestions on how to wear certain items. On the downside, I was expecting something more like Tim Gunn's list of basic pieces for building a wardrobe from his TV show. Garcia also padded the list by adding non-wearable items like the iPod and the Blackberry. Overall, it is fun book to get yourself in the mood to overhaul your wardrobe, which is what I needed!

While an interesting book, I was discouraged to read that some of the 'must haves' items are very pricey. author mentions all the big name stores. not everyone lives near barneys. would have been nice to see where knockoffs can be found and how weight/height plays with clothes as well as colors to fit with the right shade of people's eyes/hair and skin.

do you see yourself buying $85 on black tights? not everyone can splurge on coco chanel purses. not everyone likes safari jackets. n...more

Obviously a light read, but Nina is right on about the 100 items every girl's closet needs. There were a lot of things you expect (LBD) but so many I didn't (boyfriend sweater? leather pants?) and really great tips about styling and buying vintage. One of those books I'm sure I'll refer to frequently.

Cute watercolor drawings, but I was surprised by how much it is focused on high-end luxury goods few could afford. Perhaps if I knew who Nina Garcia was I would have known this from the start. I will not be wearing leopard print or fishnet stockings to work any time soon...

An excellent resource. Well researched, current-classic, well illustrated with quirky watercolor fashion sketches. Gives logic for the pieces with attitude. I felt I went on a shopping trip and out to lunch with the author--good communicator and very concise.

Really cute coffee-table book about the classic fashion of every great style maven. Also written in a nice "for dummies" way with side notes and historical facts about each must-have. good quick read with really nice artwork inside!

I enjoyed reading this book more than the first one I bought. I question some of her pieces that every woman should own, but again, if anything, it didn't make me feel as though my fashion sense is that far off the deep end.

Interesting tidbits about the history of some key fashion items. Not unexpectedly, her high-end bent is not for the normal gal and many of the items seem far from essential: signet ring anyone?

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. She's always struck me as a bit, um, more difficult than I can manage, and maybe it's the surging hormones, but I found this really accessible in a way that Tim Gunn's Guide to Style isn't.

I can't afford some of what she identifies as essential pieces, but she makes an excellent point about adapting what she sees as essentials for you and your life and your circumstances. So, a $2000 Chanel bag might not make sense for me, but a $20 bag ...more

So far this is a fun book...I love all the trivia facts I'm learning...for instance, I had never heard of bakelite before, nor did I know where the word bikini came from.

This bit of fluff is a fun read. The author lists the 100 pieces of clothing and accessories that every girl should own. There is a brief history of each item (jeans, A-line dress, etc.). I'm really enjoying the nostalgic aspect of the book.

Not sure how this will fit in with my resolution of simplification, but we'll see. :)

This is such a fun book! Arranged alphabetically, it's a list of the top one hundred fashion/style necessities. Well-written and conversational, this is very enjoyable and actually helpful.

I find that I own most of the items, some I used to own (Converse, cowboy boots) and a very few I'll never own (bikini, pearl necklace).

It's not all practical (isn't that the point?) and ...more

This is a very cute, stylish book. Garcia includes what she believes to be the "essentials" of any chic lady. This is, of course, very subjective and should be taken with a grian of salt (is a $1500 bag really an "essential"?!). However, it has very whimisical drawings and some good tips.
