I actually enjoyed this book a great deal. I expected to be light, frivolous, and highly subjective and it is all those things; yet I was still pleasantly surprised. Of course I am biased a bit because I tend to be like classic things and I admire Nina Garcia's style. In that sense I am probably closer to her target audience. Any book about style is pointless if one does not admire the style sense of the author. I don't agree with all her choices, but I didn't expect to. Even as I read her...more

A fashionista of Project Runway fame declares the 100 things needed to be stylish. Here's the list of the ones I have:
* camel coat (only it hasn't fit in years)
* cosmetics bag
* denim jacket
* fur (faux, around the hood of my not-exactly-fashionable parka)
* iPod (just a Shuffle, though)
* jeans
* knee boots (a recent acquisition--I admit they make me feel more stylin' than normal)
* luggage
* one-piece swimsuit (bikini is on her list but lucky fo...more

I admit it, I have no sense when it comes to fashion. I can't tell you who makes the "it" pair of jeans this year or who makes the best shoes. I do try to look put together when I leave the house but it is time that I take a lesson from Nina Garcia, authoress to The One Hundred, A guide to the pieces every stylish woman must own.

Okay, I admit that I am not a Fashionista. I live in a rural area and wear a uniform to work, so the chic part of my wardrobe is slim. But I would love to improve in that area (I keep watching What Not to Wear, hoping something will sink in) and this book is a great guide.
There are quite a few items on this list of 100 that I actually own, surprisingly. Little Black Dress, Wayfarer sunglasses (so glad to learn that those are classic, I've been wearing them since college), Ballet Flats, Cable...more

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. She's always struck me as a bit, um, more difficult than I can manage, and maybe it's the surging hormones, but I found this really accessible in a way that Tim Gunn's Guide to Style isn't.
I can't afford some of what she identifies as essential pieces, but she makes an excellent point about adapting what she sees as essentials for you and your life and your circumstances. So, a $2000 Chanel bag might not make sense for me, but a $20 bag in a sim...more

The illustrations by Ruben Toledo alone would make this book worth owning. That said, don't let the "100" fool you: she recommends multiples of the items she lists for a number far exceeding a century. Not for the woman looking to rebuild her wardrobe from scratch, or for anyone who knows they need to quit their pack-ratting habits (such as myself, ha!)

Oh Auntie Nina... So bitchy, but so entirely right. I tried to ignore her siren song at the New Notable Non-Fiction table this weekend. But then my hubbles snuck on up me with a copy and I caved in like Amy Winehouse in a crack den. It delivers. Does 100 must-have classic items seem excessive? Um, HELLO, yes. But this is fashion, baby. And maybe it's not so daunting over a lifetime, which is your timeline to complete the challenge. Anyway, how can you argue with a woman who made Quality Champagn...more

A fabulous book for anyone who is not naturally stylish. And I also love how the book doesn't focus on fancy labels - even famous Project Runway judges buy clothes at Target and H&M.

I leafed through it, but didn't read it closely. For that reason, I don't think it is fair to rate it. But I love the illustrations by Ruben Toledo.

This was interesting and had good tips of what every woman needs to have in her closet (well the top 100). While I liked the illustrations, actual photography of what Nina refers to or describes would have been more valuable instead of telling the reader to Google it!

A book filled with clothings that every women should own sounds like a brilliant idea, right? However, I feel as though Nina ran out of topics and included things that I never knew were clothes! Champagne, valid passport and things borderline on the "pieces stylish women should own." Such as red lipstick, and iPod. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because Nina gives great places and designers to choose from. She also includes some fun facts and the history behind e

Enjoyable enough, though personally I don't need everything on her list to look or feel good about myself. I wasn't even sure why some of the items were in there, but to each their own.

Loved this book. I devoured it in 2 evenings! But I'll probably not rush out to acquire these items - but I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal!
