Richly colored, stylized gouache illustrations introduce one by one the members and instruments of an orchestra. Each of the characters bends and twists as if shaped by currents of curving, moving music-filled air. Wonderful onomonopeic text accompanies each of the instruments as it chimes in. The trombone, for example, joins in: "With mournful moan and silken tone, Itself alone comes ONE TROMBONE. Gliding, sliding, high notes go low; ONE TROMBONE is playing SOLO." Readers can be from kindergarten with read aloud to second graders as independent reading. The pictures are great with the text because the pictures show the new vocabulary encountered in the text. The book uses great rhyming using alliteration and has some examples of onomatopoeias. This is also a great counting book. The reader sees a lonely trombone gather musical friends in this narrative poem while working with numbers and instrument names.

Good book for introducing kids to the 'look' of musical instruments. Illustrations are nice. Poems are a little forced.

Introducing ten great orchestral instruments! Told in rhyme, the story follows one solor trombone as it joins brass, string, and woodwind instruments to form a chamber group. Like 'Peter and the Wolf', this book is sure to be used quite a bit as an introduction to classical music!

This book is wonderful because it introduces various musical instruments while also emphasizing counting skills. Math and music are closely related, so I really like this book because it does a great job of linking the two.

An absolutely splendid book. I've grown up around classical music and have been to many more symphony concerts than the average middle-schooler. As such, this book really hits close to home. The rhymes are fantastic, and the rhythm is so pleasing to the ear; i's like music in itself.

A supremely fun, lilting exploration of the instruments in an orchestra with a beautiful, musical vocabulary and energetic illustrations that evoke Chagall and Maira Kalman. It's a pleasure to read out loud however many times your kid requires.

My daughter and I LOVE this book. Not only a cute rhyming story, but a great way to learn instruments, musical groupings and the make up of an orchestra.
