Book Review: Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire By Jim Cymbala
In 1972, a young married man who did not have a background in ministry took over a dying congregation in a tough, inner-city neighborhood at the urgent request of his minister father-in-law.
Less than twenty people were attending services, the building was in disrepair and there was no money for even basic necessities. Yet within a few years the congregation was much larger and thriving. It eventually began to number in the thousands and develope...more

MY REVIEW:
I think it was the title...but for whatever reason this is a book I had seen many times and just never bought for myself to read. But recently when a dear man of God recommended this to our church leadership I immediately found it on PaperBackSwap and began to read it.
WOW!
This book is not about the how-to's of prayer like so many other books are, but about the why we pray and the power of prayer. And for those of you in my circle, it's not "out there" either. While there are a few thi...more

This is an excellent book for any Christian who wants to discover what "The Church" is supposed to look like, and act like. Jim Cymbala is humble and authentic. His passion for Christ comes through on every page. With much wisdom and insight he gives a very balanced view on issues dealing with spiritual warfare and culture issues. His stand and hard-hitting truth is always saturated in scripture. He makes the important and often looked-over point that the "problems with the world" is not seculari...more
Enjoyed this book about allowing God’s Spirit to invade our hearts. Some of my favorite quotes include:
“I discovered an astonishing truth: God is attracted to weakness. He can't resist those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need him.”
“After all, people weren't hungry for fancy sermons or organizational polish. They just wanted love. They wanted to know that God could pick them up and give them a second chance.”

Jim Cymbala was a familiar name to me, as I had read some of his articles in Charisma magazine. The Charismatic books are the most widely read books in Christendom. I've not really been impressed with one to date—there is always a running theme under them all which I do not adhere to.
Jim was thrown into the role of Pastor by the hand of his father-in-law. Jim had no formal ministerial training(and I suspect still hasn't), and make no mistake about it, he takes pride in that fact.

What happens when the pastor/leader and congregation gives up their agendas, traditions, routines, and allows the Holy Spirit to move as He pleases?
Brooklyn Tabernacle happens!
This is a tremendous account of a truly Spirit-led church! As an ex-leader of a church group, I've always wondered what a church service would look like under the complete control of the Holy Spirit. Jim Cymbala knows, and that's probably the only way he knows how to run a church service now: to submit to the Holy Spirit...more

I got a lot out of this book. I pretty much devoured it in just a couple hours. A lot of Christian living/inspirational books out there are just so fluffy and "christianity lite." This actually challenges the reader to change and take their faith seriously. It brings to mind the verse in the book of James, I think, that says something along the lines of faith without works is dead. We don't earn our salvation but there should be evidence that SOMETHING has changed and we are living a new life.

Jim Cymbala is the pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Although he didn't found the tabernacle, it was just a handful of parishoners when his father-in-law gave him the assignment back in the early 70s. It now attracts some 8,000 weekly seekers and has satellites thoughout the land. Ironically, Fresh Wind Fresh Fire is about not seeking numbers in your church but seeking the Holy Spirit. He, if given the opportunity, will grow your church and depth of worship. I've read numerous books by Jim but...more
The amazing awakening of the congregation of Brooklyn Tabernacle. Pastor Cymbala displays the history of what God did in changing the mindset of a tiny, fledgling congregation in Brooklyn from man-focus to God-focus. This book is full of short snippets of the history and ministry of the Brooklyn Tab--a chronicle of God’s working in the city. Starting at the beginning of Cymbala’s ministry, the book opens with stories of failure and heartache. A 20 person discouraged church almost made Jim Cymbal...more
I really enjoyed this one. This books shows that if you are earnestly seeking, praying, and calling on God, He listens and he will reward you. Hebrews 11:6
Some parts that really stood out to me and affected me:
"If we call upon the Lord, he promised in his word to answer, to bring the unsaved to himself, to pour out his spirit among us. If we don't call upon the name of the Lord, he has promised nothing-nothing at all. The future will depend upon our time in prayer." -Jim Cymbala pg. 27

It wasn't that I disliked the book's core message: that prayer and the Holy Spirit are what matters in Christian community today. It was the way the message was communicated.
I felt beaten up and beaten down by the onslaught of marshal metaphors, and seriously unnerved at the prejudice shown by Cymbala on matters of family life, sexuality and relationships.
The core message could have been got across in a dozen or more pages, and the rest could be left out. It is a truly serious and valuable messa...more

Jim Cymbala took over the Brooklyn Tabernacle when it had less than 2 dozen people straggling in to the broken down church. Through prayer, fervent prayer, this church grew and grew to become a well known and loved house of the Lord, not only with his pastoring but with the God-given choir leadership of his wife Carol. The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is known worldwide. This book will change your life through the Holy Spirit! We have not because we ask not is essentially the message here. We need...more
This is a very good book that focuses on the need for prayer (and the lack thereof) in churches today. He does a very good job of balancing the sovereignty of God with the responsibility of people, which is a difficult task indeed when handling the topic of prayer. His call is simple and straight-forward, we need to stop focusing on the unimportant and come back to seeking God. This book caused me on many occasions to stop and spend time seeking the face of God and cry out to Him through prayer....more
This book offered some great insight into how one church grew from 20 to a few thousand just through prayer. I loved the type of prayer life as a church that Jim Cymbala pointed to as the reason for the growth of the Brooklyn Tabernacle.
One quote stands out above everything else in this book - "I despaired at the thought that my life might slip by without seeing God move mightly on our behalf." Wow.

What happens when a church is opened up to the Spirit of God? What happens when people pray? What can God do through you when you allow Him to use you? These are just some of the thoughts and reflections Cymbala asks in this book which is also a memoir of the start of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Cymbala is careful to say that God grew the church as they prayed, but at the end of the book he makes it a point to say that not all churches can start a prayer meeting, and expect great results of the bat...more
Many books exist that exhort God's people to pray. Cymbala takes a different approach. I did not feel like someone was trying to preach to me or to teach me, although at times, those are needful. In this book, I followed along on Cymbala's path of being a pastor. I was there for his struggles, doubts, fears, and hard decisions. Along the way, I could see how his relationship with God helped guide his decision-making. I felt his inner struggles as finances dwindled, congregations slept, and famil...more
Very good book on the Holy Spirit and prayer. It gives a very balanced view of faith and action. Helpful and true thoughts on prayer that could provide some great discussion. Very motivating, especially in the areas of prayer and the holy spirit. I would recommend this book; it's a quick read. I enjoyed the autobiographical first few chapters, along with the anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book that emphasize various points made by the author.
This is an amazing story of truth and passion of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church leader, Jim Cymbala. He accomplishes what people tell him he can't. It is very inspirational and makes one wish we all walked the way he has. Brent and I had the opportunity to worship at the Brooklyn Tabernacle, hear Pastor Jim, and be in awe of the choir. It was a worship experience that neither one of us will ever forget!
Jim Cymbala's autobiographical tale of how to build a great church has an amazing conclusion: more God= better church. Laced with miraculous stories of God's power and breakthrough, my 3rd read of this book was the most inspiring yet. Great stories are much more descriptive than prescriptive which makes this book find a great place to minister to the pastor, church goer, and/or Christian with equal effectiveness.
I read this book in Nigeria, and I thought it was fantastic... in fact, it really challenged my on my prayer life, and the emphasis on prayer for the sake a the church. Jim Cymbala suggests that the real measure of a church's health is not how many people are coming, or how much people are giving, but by its passion for prayer. Prayer is the true spiritual barometer of the church.
This book is excellent. It has changed my life (although I've only had two weeks or so of "life" since I finished most of it) and I hope my life stays changed.
The biggest impact of this book came from the story of King Asa and how he at first called out to God, and then later relied on himself. That lesson, combined with the a better understanding of how God has blessings waiting for us that we need to ask him for, has changed my outlook on prayer. God wants us to call out to him! This was a quick little book. I read it in just one evening.
I really loved the first half, all the history of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. It is incredible what God did through these people.
I read this for a book club & when I first saw it, I was kind of bummed. It didn't seem like something I would like at all, but in fact I thought it was pretty good.

Overall an inspiring book! Jim's style of writing is more for inspiration than information. I've highlighted parts of the book that I'd like to refer back to, but generally the book leaves an impression about the power of prayer within the context of a church rather than specific details about how a church can encourage or develop that.
This is mostly autobiographical and about the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. The main focus is on how the church focuses on prayer. Those parts are really good and I want to forward it on to others at my church. He also throws in some thoughts on culture and politics that I find less helpful, but they do not detract from the overall theme much. What is really good about the book is that he keeps asserting that the real power of the church is its prayer and that we all need to be involved in prayer...more
This book is a life changer. I would write about it here but I've already written about the impact the book has on lives of those who love the Lord. A story about his rebellious daughter is included. Check out my page for more. http://mekenzie.hubpages.com/hub/A-Si...

This was a wonderful read for me. Jim Cymbala is the Pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church & shares the story of how God rebuilt the ministry through the humbling of His people. If you desire more of God & want to take the gospel seriously, then this is a must read for you!
It's been years since I read this, but after reading it again, I find it's just as fresh was it was back then. The emphasis has been placing squarely on prayer as key to maintaining our focus on doing the will of God. The history of Brooklyn Tabernacle was refreshingly brought back to light as well. This book has been responsible for a resurgence of ferverent prayer in the church and that's a good.
