One of my favoritest kid's books of all time. If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to want a glass of milk to go with it. Then he'll want a mirror to see if he has a milk mustache. Too cute for words. (Not really because I'm talking about it right now) This story reminds me of...JOEL! If you buy your wife a rabbit for Valentine's Day, then you have to build a hutch to keep it in. Had to buy it after reading it at the library, and it's still a favorite around here two years later!
It amazes me that this book is almost as old as I am, is of course considered a very popular classic, and yet - I never read it until I was an adult!
Given its age, I'm sure everybody *else* here knows the plot, but just in case, this is a book about a (very logical, I'm sure) series of misadventures that happens after you give something to a mouse. Every request leads to another thing, an...more

This is one of those stories that builds on itself going from the plausible to more and more outrageous conclusions. Intricate drawing also build and tell their own story (much like Cat in the Hat) independent of the text. I think there is even a little bit of a message about conservation or the consequences of feeding wild animals and the dependancy that causes. Only it's not depicted in such a serious way. Hahaha! We got bored in my 6th grade english class one day so we had about ten minutes left in class. This is a book kids love. I liked it too as a kid, but it always made me want a cookie, so maybe have some cookies on hand. It about a mouse who wants a cookie but this seemingly simple request turns into a big ordeal. It would be great to teach sequencial (spelling?) order of the book because first he wants a cookie, then he wants milk, then a straw. It would be great to have them make up their own story similiar to this one. Or just have the events up on the board and let them put them all tog...more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! Sweet, funny, and addicting, you can read it again and again and not tire of it. And whomever the artist is, I hope s/he got paid big bucks, because half of this book's enjoyment are those fantastic illustrations which just capture the melodramatic emotions of the mouse and the disbelief of the harried little boy. Sadly, the books that followed ("If You Give a Moose a Muffin," etc.) haven't quite hit the mark as this first one, but are enjoyable just the sam

Children love this book. The anticipation of what comes next is a part of the enjoyment for this book, but the other is the delightful drawings. Who can resist a cute little mouse grabbing his throat and gasping for something to drink? (Well, many of parents can, but it's not meant for us.)
This book was often requested, and I never minded reading it aloud.
Recommended (although if you have young children, it'll be impossible to avoid this!).

I just read this to my daughter for the miliioneth time. I love these series of books. I wonder if the author thought of them while watching a toddler play. My daughter goes from one thing to the next in such rapid succesion. I love the picture at the end of the boy, surrounded by all the stuff the mouse got into, slumped on the floor, exhausted. I feel like that most days at the end of the day. : >

After all the hype around this book and series, I expected more, I think. The kids like it okay, but I found it a little forced and choppy for reading. It's fun for activities, though, and the illustrations are cute, but I think there are a lot of great kids books that teach sequence and cause and effect, if that's what you're looking for, and I'm not convinced this one is the end-all-be-all.

These books are really cute for read alouds. It is about a mouse that keeps wanting more. If you give him something, he is sure to want something else.
I would use it in my classroom as a book to model think alouds as well as predicting. It is a good book to involve the students in. You can always stop and ask the students what they think will happen next, what the mouse would want next.

I've read this book to numerous children over the years & while the kids all LOVE it - they think it's funny - I personally think it one of the most annoying books.
I rated it as 3 stars because of the children's reactions to the book, after all, it is a childrens' book.

This book is cute and there's a lot of words that are repeated. This book could be used to teach children about sequence or perhaps help them think what to do next, for example, when the mouse ate some cookies, he got thirsty, and he needed some milk. Children can also learn how to make prediction with this book.

I love books that make my boy giggle, and he giggled when he read this one. It's a simple concept, one of cause and effect, but so very silly that it makes this story worth reading again and again. Best read out-loud with lots emoting for proper giggling-achievement.

I loved this book, I had read if you give a moose a muffin and loved it befor. I think that this author has a creative imagination that kids relate to on a regular basis. I would lovo to do a creative writing piece with it or even maybe even a math assignment of counting chocolate chips in cookies. yum.

You can tell this is a work of fiction because
1) the mouse is wearing cute litte overalls
2) in real life if you gave a mouse a cookie, you wouldn't just have a wacky little adventure, the mouse would move several family members into your house and they would all commence to shit everywhere

All parents who enjoy a fun read with their wee one
This book was given to us as a baby gift for our first girl -- and it's just a wonderful "cause and effect" read. The illustrations are terrific. We would love to read the whole series -- our little library only has "If You Give a Pig a Pancake," so we may to spring for these next books!

This was a quick favorite home from the library. The illustrations are nice, although the mouse is a little quirky looking to me. The story is funny and cute. When we got to the part where he asks for a glass of milk, DS would always ask for one too.

Absolute classic. A wonderful book where a mouse illustrates the concept that if you give someone something, they're going to want more. The absurd chain of events that spins off as a result of a simple gesture will entertain adults and kids alike.
