I'm generally not a short story person, but after reading this and some of Angela Carter's work, I might have to reconsider my position on that. All of the stories in this collection are disturbing, touching on topics such as suicide, pedophilia, xenophobia, and murder. Mr. Gorman is very skilled at convincing the reader that these dark aspects of human nature exist in all of us, and that any of us can (and will) tap into that darkness under the right circumstances. A depressing realization. But ...more

I LOVED this collection of stories: everything from a 'coming of age' story to 'knights rescuing damsels' type of story to anything in between. Wonderful nostalgia to visit (even though some of the stories are grim, as previously reviewed). I would HIGHLY recommend it. :)

Edward Joseph Gorman was born on November 2, 1941 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He spent 20 years in the advertising industry before leaving to write full-time in 1984. Since then, he has been incredibly prolific, averaging 2-3 novels a year in addition to many short stories, editing anthologies, and founding and editing Mystery Scene, the new magazine of the mystery field.
