I first encountered Vassar Miller's name in Larry McMurtry's infamous "Ever a Bridegroom" essay, originally printed in 1981 in the Texas Observer. Barbara
An underrrated and mischaracterized poet (at least in most anthologies). She is not the delicate Christian flower in a wheelchair tapping feebly away at her Underwood the way anthology blurbs describe her. Instead, she's George Herbert's spiritual daughter, grabbing God by the collar and demanding to know WHY.
The formal elements are occasionally sloppy, but the energy of the poems makes that excuseable. I'd rather have a poem that shoves me hard and knocks the wind out of me even if its edges a...more

This is a wonderful collection! Vassar Miller's poetry is very evocative and real. She's not afraid to use somewhat startling language to get her point across.
