De retoriek in het loflied op Marten Toonders werk munt uit in een prachtige mallemolen van bijvoeglijke naamwoorden. Verderop in het boek, voornamelijk bestaande uit lezingen en een interview, is het taalgebruik gemiddeld iets minder gepolijst, zij het nog steeds best barok, en inhoudelijk iets minder uitgesproken. Ook iets minder van kwaliteit dan Wolkers’ andere essaybundel, ‘Tarzan in Arles’, van drie jaar eerder. Mijn waardering, tot uitdrukking komend in de sterren, is dus wel net bovengem ...more

Essaybundel van Wolkers. bevat essays over het verband tussen de groteske moraliteiten van Marten Toonder en de oerverhalen in de bijbel, over het lezen van boeken, over schilderijen, over tuinen, over de aardappeleters van Vincent van Gogh en over erotiek in de beeldende kunst.

Jan Hendrik Wolkers was a Dutch author, sculptor and painter.

Wolkers is considered one of the "Great Four" writers of post-World War II Dutch literature, along with Willem Frederik Hermans, Harry Mulisch and Gerard Reve (the latter authors are also known as the "Great Three"). He became noted in the 1960s mainly for his strikingly direct descriptions of sex.
