Kirja on ujostelematon.

I don't understand what the Sweedish Academy found in Modiano's work that's worthy of a Nobel Prize.
I don't want to be an ignorant, but I have the feeling that one could easily sit down and write about random stuff, about somebody wandering on streets at night and keep questioning about himself and the others.
Ok, that's his style...he didn't ask to be Nobel laureate, but c'mon...if you compare him to other laureates from the 20th century you would have an ironic smile on your face.

I began with "

I found this book more accessible than The Night Watch, though I am more intrigued by that one.

As I was reading this, it reminded me that it was written, I think, at a similar time to the films of the French New Wave. I sensed some similarities in the way the surroundings and the people were presented. I also now know that Modiano was joint writer with Louis Malle of the screenplay for Lacombe Lucien: The Screenplay. I'm pleased that I'm beginning to sort a context for myself for Patrick Modian

I had read and greatly enjoyed one of this year's Nobel Prize winner's novels many years ago, but I don’t remember which. I found this one interesting, especially the literary strategies by which the narrator seeks out the father he hardly knew. But I found it essentially dull, and stopped halfway through.

This is the 3rd book in the "Occupation Trilogy", and in my opinion is more difficult than the 2nd book, "Night Watch". As with every Modiano novella I have read, there are time shifts, and memory is central to the plot. I struggled with the multiple names the shady characters had, and the fact that they were never adequately described. I could not put a body or face on any of them. It was not until the middle of the book, when we went back 10 years, did I grasp who was who and what the timeline ...more

Very impressionistic. Everything is sketched, leaving me curious about the details. "Baron" Deyckecaire appears to be a refugee from Alexandria - but why and when? Why does his son end up at boarding school in Bordeaux. No mention at all of a mother. His adopts the name Serge Alexandre and seems to have no practical Jewish heritage. There is no sense of real motivation for his personal sensitivity to the anti-semitism around them. Suddenly out of the blue he kills one of them. In the end he ...more

This was such a strange novel. I loved everything about it, except for possibly the single most important detail in the novel. A 27 year old man strikes up a relationship with his father, whom he hadn't seen in 10 years, under an assumed identity, and his father doesn't recognize him??? This makes little sense and really does damage to the credibility of the novel.

However, the themes, for an early Modiano novel, prefigure the themes he would use throughout his career. Ambiguity, identity, wrest

A vague book. Lots of holes to fill and rises a lot of questions. I like that.
Essentially the book is about "the search of the father" - the protagonist's "father" is there, but what do we know of him? "Father" is the idea that pushes the protagonist further.
A bit like detective story (but don't expect much action here). It's like moving in circles, always returning back to the same spot or image, and gaining more information every round but still being unsure of progress. There are clues, there

The entry doesn't list the English version (or at least the ebook I got hold of, Ring Roads, but that might be how one finds it in the US.) Odd that there doesn't seem to be readily available English translation of the first volume of this so-called Occupation Trilogy but the second and third volumes are, natch, peerless.

There is a certain atmosphere, certain scenes that make one think of theater and puppets show. I'am about to begin the part where the Narrator meets his father for the first time and start roaming the streets of Paris, a bonding experience if there was one. All in all, a pain, 'cause it's for school :p

Good plot that creates lots of questions as it unfolds, but Do we actually find anything out ? Im afraid not!
You just follow the narrator for a while , get to know what he knows and what he is looking for and the rest remains unknown ...

Aika vaikea kirja. ;). Kolme-kolme miinus kuitenkin.

A lot of Marketing for this Nobel Prize winner. A very weak story trying to be shallow on the same matter as "la recherche du temps perdu" de Proust but monotonus and quite descriptive. Dissapointed on Modiano and his intimacy...

It's very good and very readable. It explores the themes of identity and war time France, which could be war time anywhere. It's early Modiano and he got better as he matured and wrote more. If you only plan to read one of his novels, I recommend "Missing Person".
