Again, an audiobook for entering data. Okay--so strange topic and it sounds a bit 'out there'. But outside of being pretty grisly, I found this book really interesting. In terms of the writing style, this author takes you right to the point of believability but then stops short and brings you back. Several times during the recording I felt myself saying...okay, now you've gone past the point where I'll believe you and it's turning into some weird supernatural story...then 2 sentences later she b...more

This is kind of an odd mystery/thriller - detective Jane and forensic pathologist Maura are involved in a particular gruesome killing, involving dismemberment and what appears to be a satanic ritual. We're given an insight into the killer's childhood through some flashback chapters, and into one of the people's he's pursuing in separate chapters again.

I've obviously come into a developed relationship between Jane and Maura which must have occurred in previous books - Jane's all snappy with ...more

A series of grisly murders begins happening in a town outside of Boston. The murder scenes are marked in religions symbols that relate to evil in multiple religions - modern and ancient. The detectives are baffled by the cases and can't make any connections until they meet the members of the Mephisto Club. The Mephisto club is a group of demon hunters who believe that evil exists in the form of demons. When members of their group begin being murdered, they believe it's an extermination and a...more

This book was ok... I read a few of Tess Gerritsen's other books in this series back in high school before kind of drifting away from the series, but the premise of this one caught my eye. It's not bad, but somehow I never felt the sense of suspense or threat that I did in "The Surgeon," which is odd, since so many of the chapters are devoted to following a girl on the run from the killer/killers/possibly-demonic-creature pursuing her. I didn't see the ending coming, but the climax cam...more

*** Detective Jane Rizzoli and Dr. Maura Isles are faced with the question of whether there is true evil. They are called to a gruesome murder scene where a woman has been dismembered except that one of the body parts apparently belongs to someone else. As more victims are found, so are signs indicating the murders to be ritualistic. Members of the Mephisto Club become involve...more

I saw Tess Gerritsen speak at the SF Writer's Conference and wanted to see how she practiced what she preached. The Mephisto Club was chosen pretty much at Random. The woman definitely has some Steven King to her. It was a great read, a cop story in the mystery-thriller spectrum. Her descriptions were tight and clear with occasional uses of some pretty fancy (dare I say "literary") description.
She used two female police officers, a detective and a forensic md, of about the same age f...more

It amazes me that Tess Gerritsen is able to write such awesome thrillers, time after time. And yet she does, proving that she is, quite simply, at the top of her game--and at the top of the psychological thriller/mystery genre!

Many others have outlined the plot of THE MEPHISTO CLUB, so let me just say a few things: this is a great storyline, original, and handled deftly. The action-adventure is non-stop throughout the book, and although you know, basically from the beginning of the story, w...more

My local independent bookstore rents new, best-selling, hardcover fiction for $3 a week. During the summer, when I have time to read, I can get my fix of favorite authors without waiting for the paperbacks to come out. Sometimes that means having to read late into the night on the last day of the week, because I’m too cheap to pay the extra 25¢ a day if the book is late.

With Tess Gerritsen’s books, that’s not a problem. The problem is not staying up all night to read the book in one s...more

Tess Gerritsen’s latest book, The Mephisto Club is book #6 of the Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles Series. I have been following this series from the start and I must say this is the most chilling and the most graphic, so far. The crime scenes are decribed in so much detail, it’s almost like you’re watching the crime scene on television, or you are right there in person. I found Jane to be a little cold, and unfeeling towards Maura in this book, which I didn’t like. The whole investigation...more

alternating narrators delve into the story of a series of grisly murders. one is boston medical examiner maura isles, the other is detective jane rizzoli. maybe it was sloppy reading on my part, but i kept getting them confused at first. one has a loving husband and young daughter, the other has parents who are divorcing and an infatuation with a catholic priest. their personal lives are put on hold by this bizarre case, and a killer that scrawls latin phrases and religious symbols at his cr...more

I met Tess Gerritsen this last summer at the Saturday Farmer's Market in Camden Maine. She was playing the violin, signing books and I found her to be an amazing woman. I read a couple of her early books "Harvest" and "The Surgeon" back some years ago and enjoyed them but never kept up with her. Decided to go back and look at the books I've missed and try another one. I bought this book because it was a bargain book at B&N and I was away from home without a book, hate th...more

I decided to read something by Tess Gerritsen because I read an interview with her and learned that she is a physician who left her successful practice to become a writer and raise her kids, and she's sold millions of books. I was intrigued and picked up "The Mephisto Club" at the library while waiting for a book on hold to become available. It was the type of novel that I would have loved in high school, very Mary Higgins Clark or Robin Cook. Gerritsen clearly uses the same characters...more

Great suspense, with murder, a club of scholars who believe in the <i>real< /i> existence of Satan and are united to prove it and a little semi-gore at the heart of it.

This seems an entry in a series about the adventures of Boston M.E Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli. There are two personal subplots (one each) that will obviously continue in later entries, and/or have begun in earlier entries. They add bulk to the characterizations of the major characters, without getting...more

Just can't get away from those Tess Gerritsen books! This is Book 6 in the Jane Rizzoli series and I'm wondering where she is going with this, since Medical Examiner Maura Isles seems to be leading a very weird life that is definitely taking her somewhere, but it is for some future book for us to know, I guess.

This one deals with satanic cults and even more bizarre murders and a chase which take the victim across Europe in the hope of evading her would-be killer. While there is lots of sus...more

huh. i suppose i'm a little over the symbology thing (thank you, dan brown) but otherwise, it was pretty good. a fast read, which i wanted.

also, i desperately want to read the earlier books where maura and jane first meet each other, because there is CLEARLY a history between these two. man.

i also liked how there was no falling in love with the crazy/cop/whoever. all romance was pretty regulated to making things complicated between the women.

(though it was interesting, i think, th...more

The Mephisto Club is "a cult of scholars who aim to prove that Satan himself exists among us ..."

This book is another well-written, suspenseful murder mystery featuring M.E. Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli. It's got an intriguing plot line and a fascinating ending that I, at least, was not expecting. This is not your typical mystery-romance formula writing; it's a good read that requires you to think and consider the implications of each major point.

My first Tess Gerritsen book and I will definitely read her again. This was the latest book in a series she did surrounding a detective and medical examiner in Boston. This one dealt with a gruesome murder and the possibility of some "other worldly" forces at play. Definitely moved very well and kept my interest peaked, although did not have the kick I was expecting at the end, possibly due to lack of character development of a few key players.

A good, fluffy crime thriller with an element of the international spy thriller thrown in for fun.
When a string (if you call three a string) of bizarre murders hits Boston, a detective and a medical examiner fall into a bizarre partnership with an occult group intent on proving the existence of Satan. Meanwhile, a young woman travels across Europe to escape a malevolent presence.
Written by a doctor, so the medical bits and gore are well-done.

This was the first book I have read by Tess Gerritsen and it was just ok for me. It did get more exciting the more I read. However, I did not like the ending. It happened so fast and with a questionable closure! I still have many questions. So there must be another book after this right?!? I had a hard time connecting with the main characters Jane and Maura. I feel I was getting to know them and then I felt like I didn't know them at all!

This was an excellent summer/beach read. I found it to be a real page turner, with a great twist at the end. It is apparently part of a detective series. Character development was flimsy, but maybe it was developed in previous novels in the series. I also could have done without the subplot in which the detective's parents get separated--maybe it was added for comic relief?
