In the dying months of World War II on January 31, 1945, the first Red Army troops reached the River Oder, barely 40 miles from Berlin. Everyone at Soviet Headquarters expected Marshal Zhukov's troops quickly to bring the war to an end. But despite bitter fighting by both sides, a bloody stalemate persisted for two months. At the end of this time the Soviet bridgeheads ...more

I found this book to be a good overview of the Oder river battles, and the breakthrough to Berlin. The author has throughly researched the campaign. There is a lot of information here. The story of the battle is interlaced with first person accounts, from common soldiers and officers, all the way to top Generals. There are quite a few accounts of interesting actions that happened in the battle. I did find the book to drag at times for me. The author talks a lot about all the troop movements. ...more

This is an almost minute by minute, blow by blow account of the final drive on Berlin by the Red Army. The detail is impressive but easy to get bogged down in and confused by if you let your concentration slip. Tony Le Tissier and his team spent many a quiet hour poring over the archives to produce this book. They are to be highly commended for this, to give a snail's-eye view of an important part of WWII/ The Great Patriotic War. He has his limitations, in terms of military and strategic knowledge but that is so charming as to be entirely forgivable and he comes across as a genuine military historian who has spent many long hours with honorable military men, albeit they were on the losing side.

Excellent account of the brutal fighting during the first three days of the Soviets final offensive on Berlin in April of 1945. It is very detailed so if you prefer a survey book this one is not the best choice.
The Red Army storms Berlin. Not pretty but effective. Le Tissier is an expert on this phase of the war.
