Follows modern day teenager Johnny Doolan as told to his psychiatrist. Johnny's favourite books are gothic novels and Grimms' Fairy Tale he finds that the scenes, illustrations and characters from these books intrude upon his everyday life to such an extent that he is transported to Gothic Hospital - an infirmary for orphans.

Wow, this book was totally unexpected.

Some of the fairy tales are grimmer then Grimm's (no pun intended). The way Gary Crew has incorporated them is actually pretty clever.

Overall, this book surprised me, especially about how dark and macabre it was, but I probably should have seen it coming after The Diviner's Son. Not to mention, the title is Gothic Hospital, and fits this genre reasonably well.

Too bad, he thrill wasn't sustained until the end. The ending kind of sucks.
