Another truly spellbinding novel by Delinsky!!

This is a novel that brings about many emotions of past, present, and future relationships. I related to the twist of fates, as it were, because when a person faces a near-death experience or an incident where one could have easily died because so many other's did, we often ponder the what-if of our own life's choices.
The Summer I Dared...to stand on my own, to make choices for myself, to reach out to a child and others, to go out of our comfort zone...all positions that change who ...more

I am a big Barbara Delinsky fan. I have read some good ones, some great ones, and some bad ones from this author. This one was a good one, not up to par with her "Looking for Peyton's Place" but well written just the same.
I do, however commend her desire to go out of her comfort zone to speak and write about something completely foriegn to her. At the back of the book there is an interview with Barbara and they asked what inspired this book. She was thinking of several trag...more

I like Barbara Delinsky books and this was a very good summer read. Her characters are strong and you want to see what will happen next. I would definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed Barbara's style of writing and this won't be the only book by her that I will read.

Not sure where the book came from - I don't think it was spontaneous generation on my bedroom floor, but that's where I picked it up from.
This story reminded me of The Vineyard, not in terms of the story or setting, really, but in terms of the type of writing, the characters and how it gripped me.
Although Julia has a bit of a too good to be true side, she is nonetheless an appealing character and this time of change for her is moving. Interesting look into the lobster fishing comm...more

This book was incredible. While three characters survive what 9 others didn't, you see them connect and help one another move on. It shows that trauma can help people reevaluate their life, and choices they have made. For Noah it was repairing a relationship with his son, for Kim it was finding her voice when she was so filled of horror, and for Julie it was deciding what she wanted and not what others wanted.

I hate writing this review, because Barbara is one of my favorite authors. I shouldn't say I read this book, because I struggled through to page 178 of the 491 pages and finally said enough is enough. It was a very slow boring book to read. (That is just my opinion only.) I noticed quite a few who have read this book, loved it, liked it, and thought it was and okay read. However, I am not one of them.

I loved this book. It had a little of everything. It was a book, again, i could not put down. It is rare for me to find books that I could not put down. I loved all the characters. The mystery could have been a little bit more dramatic, but ifyou get the whole "local law", and have a strong family sense, then a person would welcome it. Good book.
This book also came into my house over the holidays. I think it's interesting that the genre says "mass market" in it. Anyway, it was a fast paced story about small island life, being a lobsterman, and intrigue on the east coast. The plot kept moving, although it was occasionally predictable. Another found book, another good read.
This was a pretty good book. It's an old-fashion good story. I've never read any of her books before, but I liked this one I had to read for my church book club.
On pg. 155 Julia asks:
Where do you draw the line between the obligation you have to your family and the one you have to yourself?
I like that quote.

I love books that take me to places very different from my own, along with things I've never experienced. This book explores a lot of new ideas for me, survivor guilt, lobster fisheries, and angora rabbits. My favorite part is when father and son are lost at sea in a storm and the bonding that takes place.

I found this book to be too unbelievable. The almost instant connection that the main character, Julia had with everyone in the town was not realistic. She became involved in everybody's lives right away and I just did not believe it. I don't plan on reading any more of Barbara Delinsky's books.

New author to me.....loved her. The book makes me want to take a trip to the coast of Mains where this tale takes place. I also learned a lot about the rabbits, the daily care, the wonderul yarns make from their hair. The other extremely interesting and dangerous occupation lobster fishermen.
The Summer I Dared is a novel about Julia Bechtel, one of three survivors of a small ferry boat accident. The beginning of the book was rather slow and seemed to drag on. It picked up after Julia met Kim, one of the other survivors who was left mute from the trauma of the accident. The story was interesting, although rather predictable.
A ferry accident is the key to a summer of self-discovery for an unhappy wife and mother. Family secrets are revealed, the mystery of the ferry accident is solved, and romance comes unexpectedly. I liked the way the main character gained self-esteem and independence.
This author is usually an entertaining read and so is this book. If you want to understand lobstering - this is the right fictional book. When given a second chance at life, she has the courage to chart a new path even tho it is not an easy path.
I've been in a reading funk lately, so I was hoping that this light read would bring me out of it. Unfortunately, it didn't. It was a good book, and I'd read another by this author. Maybe something else will bring me out of the funk.
This book was set on a fictional island off the coast of Maine. It starts with a horrific collision of a Ferry boat with a Lobsterboat. There are only 3 survivors out of all nine people. Julia, the main character and one of the survivors then questions her purpose in life and what to do now. We follow her struggle with family ties, responsibilities and new feelings and desires. I was drawn to this book because of the island setting and lobstering! There are wonderful descriptions of the lo...more
This was a good summer read. The plot followed a basically cookie-cutter theme, but there was enough "other" to make it worth reading. Plus, I really enjoyed the different characters and what they offered.
i learned a lot about lobsters and Maine and fishing boats. I found the mystery and drama a little unconvincing and the main characters a little too perfect. but it kept my attention all the way through
This is the first book by Barbara Delinsky that I've read and I did quite enjoy it. It's a bit of a romance, which I didn't expect, but quite enjoyable as the main character survives a terrible boat wreck and in the process, begins to question who she is and who she wants to be.
After giving me this book to read, my 91 year old grandmother assured me it was, 'not bad.' I am going to have to disagree. The characters were lifeless and the plot was predictable. Skip this one
I like this author in general, but this story ended so sickening sweet. I was mad at the end. The characters lives ended up too perfect! I was not in the mood for a perfectly happy ending.
I thought this book lacked so much I dont know where to start. There was zero chemistry between characters. The only thing that kept me from putting it down was that is was based on an island off a town in Maine I grew up in.
I had a hard time caring about the characters at the beginning, but by the end I really was into it and wanted to know what was happening next. Good vacation book.
I enjoyed the plot but the ending was rather abrupt- as though the autor only had so many pages and had to cram it in! All in all, it was an enjoyable read.
Trauma prompts a close look at life and choices; In the aftermath the direction of lives change. The lack of honesty contributes to much hurt.

I was born and raised in suburban Boston. My mother’s death, when I was eight, was the defining event of a childhood that was otherwise ordinary. I took piano lessons and flute lessons. I took ballroom dancing lessons. I went to summer camp through my fifteenth year (in Maine, which explains the setting of so many of my stories), then spent my sixteenth summer learning to type and to drive (two sk...more
