Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wolves at the Gate (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #3)

The humor is back, hurray! This felt more like part of the Buffy TV series in tone: humor on the surface, but depth in the story. The scenes in Buffy's bedroom, between Zander with Drac, and with Dawnie/Godzilla Dawn, are all terrific! Action, heart and humor, the Buffy formula. The drawings between the chapters and at the end are not quite as spectacular as in the previous volume, but still quite enjoyable. I'm really appreciating the art in these books. Another good, (super)fast read for Buffy...more
Joss Whedon's resurrection of the 8th Buffy Season continues with its third installment, which is called Wolves at the Gate. As with the two earlier volumes, this one captures all the humor and action that made the show so popular in the first place. The writing and illustrating team have done a wonderful job of bringing back old characters and allowing them to shine as they interact with the standard regular.
The action starts, literally, with wolves at the gate, only they are not alone. They ar...more

Finally catching up to "Buffy, Season Eight." They had a ball in this one doing stuff the TV show's special effects budget wouldn't have allowed, like Giant Dawn vs. Mecha-Dawn. That was the funniest part of the battle in Tokyo against a gang of shapechanging Japanese vampires. Also, the banter between Xander and Dracula was cute.
Otherwise, this is what I would have called an "average" episode if it were airing on TV: good but not outstanding, though it did move the plot arc forward a bit. Overa...more

I'd be hard press to decide between Vaughan and Goddard, both having done my favourite shows or comic respectively, but also worked in shows I don't like where their work seemed boring, but as I said in TPB 2, this 3rd volume is more amusing, funnier (but not in a bad way). So here are wonderful moments with Andrew, badly drawn but just like in the show, and Dracula, absolutely hilarious in his racist, homocidal fashion. Lots to love and laugh. Problematic for me was where they ripped of Y-The L...more

Just *awesome*. This totally felt like someone had taken the series I love and just changed its format to a graphic novel one.
Part of that is the artwork... the right artwork is a huge part of enjoying a graphic novel for me, and Messrs Jeanty, Owens and Madsen get the characters I know and love just perfect - not only do they draw the characters so that they actually look like the actors I'm used to seeing portray them, but they also get each actor's facial expressions, posture and gesture just...more

Like many I was lost without Buffy when it ended (sad I know, but then I discovered Dexter and Supernatural so life wasn't SO empty! ha ha) then my bro-in-law turned up with the first two Buffy Season 8 comics and I was hooked.
This collection deals with a group of Japanese vampires who steal the scythe and want to make Buffy all alone again by reversing the spell on the slayers.
What WILL surprise Buffy fans however is the lesbian love scene featuring the Buffster herself! Not a shock considering...more

This was probably the funniest volume of the series. Andrew's presence in this really helped contribute to the humor in this installment; the dynamic he brings is just unlike any character.
This installment is clear evidence of why I've always loved the character of Buffy. She is always a strong role model and female character despite the fact that she is never perfect. She makes mistakes and feels insecure like any other young woman and yet is such a natural-born leader and role model. Seeing t...more

This volume was so entirely Joss Whedon to a T. He still hates happiness. And Buffy still likes leading folks on, thus the song for today. Anyone surprised? But seriously, why does Joss believe that happy couples should never be allowed to actually remain happy? Either someone has to become a jackass and not marry that person, or sex turns someone evil, or one of the two has to die. There are no other options in the Whedon-verse. Sigh. So if you're coming to a Whedon show for the sweet romances,...more
It took a while to adjust to this ... advanced Buffy world. To be honest, I really don't like the werid stuff that's happening. I think it's a bit too much of too much. But well after the seventh season they had to come up with something weird as this season was already strange. The only reason why I suffer through the seventh season each time is Spike and I kind of feel like that while reading the comic. I kept reading through books one and two because I knew there'd be Dracula in book three an...more
Falling into that realm of side stories that often proved extremely entertaining within the larger arc of the show...or drastically dismal, this foray into the Buffyverse fell somewhere in between. Characterized by moments of hilarity - Willow's flying transportation service being one - and moments of horror (the death of a Slayer still freaks me out, even though there are now thousands of them), the overall tone of the story felt off to my Innate Buffy Sense (IBS). No, it wasn't my grumbling bo...more
Summary: Japanese vampires and a witch have stolen Dracula's powers and are out to undo the spell that gives the Slayer's power to more than one girl at a time. Buffy and friends travel to Tokyo to save the day while Xander reunites with Dracula, his dark master (fans of the show can fill in the punchline here.)
Characters: We have the same core characters, all acting like themselves for the most part...except Buffy, who has suddenly developed lesbian tendencies. It's slightly in character though...more

It took three volumes, but I’m finally as excited about the Season 8 comics as I am about the television series that spawned them.
This book begins with the one-off comic “A Beautiful Sunset,” which is largely exposition. It’s a short exploration of Buffy’s anxiety and isolation as the leader and figurehead of the new slayer army, but it also continues two important plot threads: an explanation of where the slayers get their wealth and material resources (and the first rumblings of the consequenc...more

Attached original review to wrong issue.
This one was fairly decent, even if Mecha-Dawn was absolutely stupid and the Japanese vampires were laughably incompetent, despite their seemingly taking years and millions of dollars to prepare for their big moment. They went down quite easily.
Oh, also, the Buffy as lesbian plot line seems a little tacked on and lurid. Maybe if Buffy had ever at any point questioned her sexuality, felt confused or expressed a sexual attraction to women, it wouldn't seem s...more

This volume contains a rather intelligent and witty arc about vampires, and an important stand-alone which introduces us to the major nemesis Twilight. The great genius idea in the stand-alone comes at the end, after giving us some important details about how Buffy awakened from the sleeping beauty curse. Twilight's plan to eliminate Buffy's moral certitude is the greatest strategy so far and totally makes sense having known Buffy for so long. Great work. The four-story arc has all the humor and...more
I started out skeptical. Elements of the previous comics seemed unlike the Buffy we knew and loved...and while l still saw some of that in the beginning of this volume, by the end of it, it really started feeling like classic Buffy again, and I was really glad to see that. It definitely still captures the characters well, but the plot contained too much senseless fighting, with not enough actual, well, plot, lacking intrigue. I feel like Willow, who, yes, I'm biased towards, since she's my favor...more

This volume of Buffy comics really blew me away. We're really starting to hit a groove I think. The story lines combined with character actions and words are starting to really fall into place with how characters acted on the show.
I think this volume really hit a high point. Things really started to get interesting in this grouping of comics and we're seeing Buffy do something that I thought would NEVER happen. I'm actually quite giddy over that however I'm a bit apprehensive as to where this w...more

I received e-book copies of these books through NetGalley. These books are are collections of comics that continue the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer after the end of the television show in season 7. The books do an excellent job of keeping the tone of the show, and most of the drawings are really good likenesses of the characters translated from screen to page. In season 8 Buffy, the new slayers, and the scooby gang are fighting a big bad named Twilight. Apparently the name was totally coinc...more
Okay, I have to admit. The biggest problem I had with this part was Dracula's portrayal. Something seemed too cracktastic about him and didn't fit all that well with the rest of the plot. I enjoyed his interactions wih Xander for the most part, but when it had more of a serious tone. My reaction to Mecha!Dawn was.... "really? you went there? Why? Why would you do that?" Despite great premise and quite high stakes, I really think this was the weakest part of the season I've read so far.

Graphic Novel. Okay, I am loving this series. It's like an awesome combination of fanfiction and a continuation of the show. There's a focus on characters, new and old (Andrew is back! Though I didn't recognize him at first because of the awful art!), and there's continuity, and Joss-caliber dialogue, and the friendships that make these characters real. In this book Buffy makes a Very Special Friend, which is maybe out of left field, but still awesome. Also: CANON.

Buffy's latest foe is a group of Japanese vampires with the powers of Dracula: the ability to turn into wolves, panthers, bees and fog. They're also planning something that will devastate the slayer army. Plus, Buffy figures out who is so in love with her that they were able to wake her from the spell cast on her in the last book.
