What Lisa Jardine is exceptionally good at is making the past relevant. These are the (cleaned-up) transcriptions of her weekly radio show of the same name, only one of which I heard on Radio 4. Whereas some texts don't translate well from the spoken to the written format, these do. The essays are necessarily short: precisely the length of a brief radio show, and therefore won't tax the impatient. An example of Jardine at her most brilliant is Chapter 4, on Robert Hooke.
