Haley Scott was a swimmer at Notre Dame during the years I was there. She, along with the rest of the Notre Dame Women's Swim Team was involved in a bus accident in January of 1992. Two of her teammates were killed, and Scott's spine was severly injured, to the point that she was not expected to walk again.
What Though the Odds begins with this crash and tracks in detail Scott's journey from the night of the accident through her recovery with the most attention paid to the year foll...more

GOD BLESS THE NOTRE DAME SWIMMERS. I showed up on campus almost 2.5 years after this accident occurred and the loss was still a very palpable experience for me. Thank you to Haley Scott for your courage to document all of this and your willingness to share some very private, desperate, painful moments. I am a more faith-filled person becuase I read your book. And from a reading perspective....I read the book in a little under 30 hours. I could not set it down........there was so much to di...more
I really like reading about how the Notre Dame community helped the author through this tragedy. I didn't know anything about the accident until a year ago when Fr. Malloy discussed it at an event that I attended. This year at the same event, Haley came to speak.
The story itself was sad and you can tell how frustrated Haley was at times. Everything she writes about with the Notre Dame community is why I like ND as much as I did.

This book affected me on a deeply personal level. I had a very similar experience when I was also attending Notre Dame as a sophomore. I was not in an accident, but I did have a very serious illness for which I spent months enduring treatments and hospital stays. I felt as though she was inside my head describing my thoughts and emotions more than once throughout the book, especially the descriptions of her relationship with her mom. I too would lash out at my mom knowing she would still love me...more

I read this book in one night -it was a compelling read for me as this happened at a time that I remember well; it also is so familiar with the hospital and ND campus that I know.
