A funny, surreal, satirical tale set during the Apocalypse. The story is an Odyssey-type tale of a man who finds himself in the center of the a whirlwind power play between the powers-that-be.
The humor is rather dark and absurd-- the Amish have a casino in Las Vegas (the only casino with no electricity), the Mormon underground rescues people from the machinations of the federal government, a band of ecoterrorists is bent on destroying every site in the "1,001 Must-See Sites i More...

I am a great fan of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction and I'm a great fan of satire.
From the reviews, this looked to be right up my alley. But, instead of a fun romp through the end of the world, I found myself plodding through a collapsed US that made little sense (and not in a good way). I was expecting something more along the lines of Matthew Thomas' 'Before and After' Where the entire landscape of the novel is completely over the top.

Basically, this looks like a rough draft by a creative person who has a very detailed and intense vision of the world he wants to portray, but no technical writing experience.
So, for the good bits: The main character is quite appealing. The different groups we run into over the course of the book are a More...

Quite possibly the best book I've ever read, or will ever hope to read. The obvious British decent of the author does not work against him, suprisingly.

I loved the ideas and concept behind this book. But sadly wasn't a fan of the writing style. The ending felt rushed and was quite a disappointment to me. Still, there were a couple of bits that were quite moving and well written.
