Visiting Vulcan is always cool, and Dillard manages the Star Trek universe very well, holding together a story without using any of the normal Enterprise crew as its center but instead introducing new characters while spreading the plot around, giving McCoy, Spock, Kirk and Uhura strong supporting roles.
