Manfred is the only reason to pick up this volume. Distant cousin to the classic Faust myth. A world weary aristocrat summons higher spirits to help ease the secret guilt over his lost Astarte. A person of great talent and power truly dulled by the world who defies even the higher powers. Mankind at his most superhuman.

I can only speak for Manfred and Doge of Venice, but they remain two of my favorite assignments from undergraduate years. I still dabble in fiction directly influenced by Marino Faliero, and I don't understand how I haven't even tried to read Byron's other dramas. Lord Byron's words are things.
