Mem Fox explains how helpful reading to babies/children can be for a lifetime of fluent literacy. She gives good examples of tactics you can use with your own children to make reading fun and enjoyable while also effectively teaching children the skills they need in order to start reading themselves. If only all parents could read this book before they have children or before their children start having difficulties with reading in elementary school. A great read for parents, educators, libra...more

This book is a very quick read. Fox is a literacy teacher, so I imagine that is why her book is very simply written and easily absorbed. She does bring up so many great points, but I don't necessarily think she has all the answers. This book gave me the feeling that I don't read enough or the right way. But I only second guess myself for a moment. Reading Freakonomics made me think about many things, including reading books and parenting. I would definitely recommend this book to my friend...more

This was an amazing book about the importance of reading aloud to children and how to teach them to love reading. It was written by children's book author Mem Fox, who is also a children's literature teacher and read aloud expert. Her books are fantastic, and this one is no exception. It was like a conversation with her instead of an informational book. I loved it and just got my own copy. Hooray!

This is a wonderfully pleasant read about the importance of reading aloud to children. Mem Fox, a children's author and literacy educator, gives practical advice to parents of young children and encourages them to spend time reading to their children and to watch them learn through that simple act. Very motivational and right on track with developmental learning theory!

Even though I am reading this book for my Materials for Children class in my GSLIS class, it is a great book for all parents, teachers and caregivers about the rewards and benefits to reading aloud to children. The simple act of a twenty minute story empowers that child with life long skills that can be taken from birth to adulthood. A great book for new parents.

I always knew books were magic, and this book proves that books are magic! It is amazing to me the power of reading books to your children. My husband and I are avid readers, and hope that our children will also find joy in reading. 'Reading Magic' shows how simply sharing a book with a child can jump start their education, thinking, and litteracy.

I really enjoyed this. It definately reinforces the importance of reading aloud to babies, todddlers, preschoolers, and up. I like how it was not a real "how to" teach your child to read (thereby creating stress on you and the child), but more how to create the culture, environment, choice of books, etc that encourages reading and the love of books.

I loved this book - she's an advocate for reading out loud to kids from infancy on up through adolescence. Made me feel good that even though all I have energy for sometimes is reading books to my kids, that it is a very important thing to do. I recommend this book to anyone who is around children enough to have time to read to them.

I used this book for my Senior Seminar multi-genre after ordering it used online. When Mem signed it last year at MRA, she had a real laugh about how I had to sprinkle the book with baking soda, stuff the binding with dryer sheets, and spray the pages with Febreeze just so I could read it at arms-length.

I love being silly when we have story time at home, and this book actually says that the silliness is beneficial! Kids learn to read and love to read the more they are read TO. A quick little book that's a good read with insightful, witty anecdotes and experiments.

I read this several years ago and loved it--but now it's a little more applicable, since I have kids of my own. So good and so important, I think--I recommend it to any parent.

I like to read books about the teaching of reading and the celebration of read-aloud, but I also just reading every thing that Mem Fox ever wrote. She's mega-entertaining.

I thought this book was a fast and easy read. It gave me some good tips to use for my son and now I want to read more aloud to him and do more trips to the library!
