This book is 40k fluff, pure and simple. Marines are sort of tough to write about since they're all essentially gods, physically and mentally engineered successfully to be flawless (unless you're corrupted by Chaos of course, and then you're still incapable of flaw or weakness but just evil minded). So everything that isn't dealing with a fall from grace storyline (which all authors end up trying to utilize...and most fail) turns into a straight action shoot em up. Which is fine as far as rea More...

I had heard from different sources that Graham McNeill had a way with writing Military-Futuristic-Battle- Science Fiction. And I have to say, the novels were gritty, descriptive narratives of just that.Sometimes the characterizations were lacking, but that has to do with the rapid pace in which McNeill propels the action and story along. There are points in each novel (This is a three novel, omnibus edition) in which the action seems to move in real time, and you can't read fast enough to keep u More...

It was all right, but there was a lot of gore and a lot of synonyms for gore. There's only so many times you can describe someone (or an alien) being eviscerated before it becomes rather tedious.

I've been an avid follower of the Warhammer 40k universe for a long time, as well as a huge Space Marine nut, and don't get me wrong, it's dark and can often times be very bloody and/or gory; but this carried it to excess in both the first and last books of the omnibus. There was so much desc More...

Please forgive the use of differing tags to those of use upon Goodreads, I originally intended this review for a different site.

Admittidly, this Omnibus, a trio of stories revolving around Ultramarine Protagonists naturally involves a degree of the imfamous strict Codex-Astartes adherence, thus, often bringing about boredom and the bland flavours of Ultramarine society, culture and tradition. So the authour`s intention of portray More...

This book is actually a collection of 3 books set in the Warhammer 40K universe. Overall, not a bad collection if your a fan of the setting or a fan of war stories.

Book 1 & 2 in this collection were by far the best. The second was especially good if you like men fighting against impossible odds (think Alamo, but on planetwide scale).

Book 3, sad to say, was a waste of space. Unless perhaps you like Dante's Inferno. It was pretty much the story of 2 space marines (super sol More...

Book 1, Nightbringer, was good, definitely 4 stars. It had intrigue, interesting characters, plot twists: so a good read. Book 2, Warriors of Ultramar, was like that sequel they make in the movie industry to capitalize on the deserved success of the first one: pretty bad, but having enough of the flavor of the first that you forgive it its flaws. The 3rd book, Dead Sky, Black Sun, was just awful. All blood and killing and synonyms thereof. The worst part is, I borrowed this book to make some sen More...

The short story to kick things off, "Chain of Command", is a nice intro to the main characters. The first two full novels, "Nightbringer", "Warriors of Ultramar" are excllent 4.5-STAR pieces (not quite perfect). Too bad things go a bit downhill from there. The "Dead Sky,Black Sun" novel has interesting plot but too much of the gothic phrasing. I guess when you are dealing with Hell and demons that will happen. But it goes a bit overboard with the freaki More...

I finally finished this big omnibus. This volume collects the first three novels chronicling the adventures and battles of Space Marine Captain Uriel Ventris and his 4th Company of the Ultramarines. This is all out escapist military science fiction but do not let that label fool you. There is some very good writing in these novels, and at least once I found myself really sympathizing with Captain Ventris. That particular instance for me came in the novel where the inquisitor lied about the fate More...

The novels plot is that alien raiders are tormenting planet Pavonis and the government is going haywire. The Ultramarines are sent to fix things up. They find something that changes everything. The main character is Uriel Ventris. He commands the 4th line of Ultramarines. The governor of Pavonis is Shonai. I liked this book mainly because of all the violence and war. At times to me the book was slow and boring. The pages were also long with lots of words. Near the end the narrator hooked me and More...

Sent to Pavonis to deal with a rebbelion, Uriel Ventris gears up for just another quick mission. That was 7 monthes ago. With only his battle brothers at his side they face rebels, heretics, crazed polititions, and even a dark god whose only goal is to devour all life and power from anyone foolish enough to test his might. Will Uriel Vemtris survive this demonic encounter? Or will he fall to chaos as so many have done before him. Only time will tell. 5 Stars.

So far so good. Book one is more of a human/political power struggle story then Soul Drinkers' nonstop hyper-action. I do hope it dives a little deeper into the Space Marines of the title, the Ultramarines, who at this point appear more as background fodder.

The first book of the three included was excellent and I was pleasantly surprised.

The second book was fairly good, but not as good as the first.

The third book was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Wanted to smash my eyes out with the book horrible.

Cheers

OK I admit, this kind of book is for guys what I suppose a Harlequin romance is for girls. Ultramarines has a lot of testosterone-loaded action and won't win any literature prizes, but it's fun.

Not bad, for gaming fiction. It gives a good feel of the universe and setting, if not literary gold.
