What a wonderful treasure!
I really couldn't tell you exactly what it was about this book that made me want to come back to it at every spare moment. It's not like there is some huge climax, or that I'm waiting to see if my favorite character makes it to the end of an adventure alive - it's not that sort of book. And yet, it is. The Penderwicks are an absolutely wonderful, lovable and endearing family made up of four sisters (from ages 4 to 12 1/2), their loving father, and their happy and p...more

I picked up this book yesterday morning and swiftly flew through it...I couldn't put it down! It follows the Penderwick sisters, Rosalind, Skye, Jane, and Batty on thier summer vacation at the wonderful cottage in Arundel. Once there, they are discover a young boy named Jeffrey that lives on the grounds with his evil mother (described by the girls themselves as the White Witch!), Mrs. Tifton. Plenty of havoic ensues as these five kids become the best of friends and have the summer of their li...more

I knew before I started reading that this would be one of those books that I should've read a long time ago. My mom got this for me for my 30th birthday last September. I don't know what took me so long, but I'm glad I finally got to it.

There was a great essay in the special girls/boys issue of The Horn Book last year that included "The Penderwicks." It compared different sensitive boys in children's literature, ie. Laurie from "Little Women," Jeffrey from "The Pend...more

The Penderwicks will go down in my memory as some of the great sister characters of all time-- right up there with the Marches and Hilary McKay's Cassons (sorry, Indigo- boys are great, too).

The plot is simple, the Penderwick sisters, their dog, Hound, and their widower father, rent a cottage for a three week summer vacation. The cottage is part of a large estate owned by the snippy, snooty, superior, Mrs. Tifton, and her son, Jeffrey.

The girls have many adventures, some planned, many ac...more

Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read!!! My heart is so full, having just finished the book--it really touched me deeply and I absolutely love it! After just a few pages, I knew I the Penderwicks were destined to become my dear book-friends (like the March sisters and Anne and Emily of old!) and indeed the whole story was absolutely darling, charming, sweet, refreshing--everything I'd hoped for and more (because it is also remarkably sensitive, thoughtful and--I hate to say it, rar...more

I read this to my daughter (age 7) last summer. It's a great summer book (since the characters are on their summer vacation), but not fluffy in the least. Though it's a modern novel, there's an innocence and timelessness to the sisters and their situation. There's no encroachment of pop culture references or lingo, and their actions and emotions are age-appropriate. Now, unfortunately that's a bit of a rarity on the Borders "young reader" bookshelves, which are crammed with books a...more

I didn't like this book quite as well as I was hoping I would. Its good, and frankly I like the very ending best out of the whole thing so I'm glad that I kept on...but, I don't think it quite makes my list of inspiring literature. Its a fun light read and not bad for the kid who's bored and feels like they've read everything in the library...but, if you've still got options...check out the classics first: Alcott, Montgomery, Wilder.
The story is all about a family whose mother has of ...more

WHAT a delightful book!!!!
This was so much fun to read!!! Not since reading "No Children, No Pets" or "The Happy Hollisters" have I had such fun with a YA book!!

This is the story of the 4 Penderwick sisters, their beloved father (who is a noted botanist), and their faithful dog "Hound".
When their yearly vacation is threatened by the sale of their rental house, Mr. Penderwick must scramble to find a new place. And he does in "Arundel", a beaut...more

The story of four sisters who go on vacation with their widowed botanist father, The Penderwicks is one of those charming books in which little seems to happen, and whose appeal is therefore difficult to critique. Here are no "bells and whistles," and the reader should not expect much in the way of narrative tension, either through suspenseful adventure or the confrontation of thorny issues.

Rather, Birdsall's strength seems to lie in her characterization, and her young heroi...more

The Penderwicks follows the romps of four sisters while staying at a summer rental cottage in the Berkshires. The four are of varying ages and varying personalities and all of them endure their own adventures over the summer. The girls befriend the teenage groundskeeper and the son of Mrs. Tifton, the snooty estate owner. This book is good old-fashioned fun that should appeal to today’s tweens.

Reaction: As soon as I began reading this, it reminded me of Edward Eager’s books. His Magic...more

I grew up reading E. Nesbit, Arthur Ransome, Edward Eager, and all those other great (English) children's authors. Children's books experts are always bemoaning the lack of greats like those today (leaving J.K. aside) but here's one. Jeanne Birdsall writes like those books of yesteryear, but updated and very much in the century. More than that, the book is an absolute delight to read. Put this on your list for a favorite child -- a niece or nephew perhaps, age 10 - 12. The Penderwicks are f...more

"The Penderwicks" is an exciting story that shows what summers are really about. The four Pengerwick sisters: Rosalind, Jane, Skye and Batty are staying in a cottage with their father for a few weeks as part of their family vacation. The girls, although very different in age and personality, have an exciting adventure relating to their neighbor Jeffery. Jeffery is the son of the owner of the estate the cottage in on. In effort to save him from being sent to boarding school, the Penderw...more

Another one of my favorite books...Another one I couldn't put down. No wonder it won an award. Inside, it was different from what I thought it was going to be--better, really. More than five-star worthy.
It got interesting when they met Jeffrey. In the start of their adventures you couldn't tell much how it was going to be, but in the middle you just HAD to know how the part was going to end. And the soccer game...that could be my favorite part. Another one was at the end when Rosalind went int...more

The four Penderwick sisters have adventures with their neighbor, a boy with a very strict mother, while on vacation. The characters are well-developed and lovely. Each Penderwick sister has a very different personality and they're all very likeable in their own way. They have a very close bond and it made me want to be a Penderwick, too!

This is a slow, rich, summertime story with an old-fashioned, timeless feel. It's also squeaky clean and would make a good suggestion for younger kids with a...more

As I begin Gardam Street, I realize why this is one of my favorite books of all time. First, Jeanne has created fabulously realistic characters-in each of the girls I see a friend or pieces of myself. Secondly, their adventures, trials and tribulations are realistic and accessible to a wide range of readers (boys and girls alike). Thirdly, there's a refreshing undercurrent of values in this story which are reinforced and woven into all situations-even when the girls make a mistake. Lastly, a...more

This is a perfect book for a summer day lounging in a hammock. It is quaint and charming and nostalgic but at the same it has a timelessness to it. Follow the four Penderwicks sisters on their adventures during their summer vacation in rural Massachussetts at the grand Arundel estate. The girls become busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel's beautiful gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and a cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. The best part of their vaca...more

Again, trying to get up to speed with recent children's literature. This is modeled after the classic kids away from home, misunderstanding, high spirits, scary adults and modest (but safe) adventure.

Not the best book ever, or one that I would have read over and over when I was younger -- and the characters I found to be a bit too precious -- but I can see how it appeals to young readers.

The story is about a group of four bright, precocious sisters who go to the country with their mostly...more

This really brought back so many of the novels I grew up. I've been trying to get my oldest to start the Bobbsey Twin series for the longest time, but she just won't do it... :(

My only complaint with this quick and enchanting children's novel is that, in evoking the novels of my childhood, it becomes glaringly obvious that these characters are not nearly as realistic as they should be. For example, the 4 year old is either the most well-spoken child I've EVER come across in fiction, or the a...more
